Wayne’s Crider hasn’t heard from UD
Wayne basketball star Markus Crider, who pulled of his letter-of-intent Sunday at Providence after coach Keno Davis was fired, has gotten a lot of attention from a variety of schools but apparently isn’t being targeted by Dayton.
Warriors coach Travis Trice said the 6-foot-6 athletic small forward is being pursued by Northwestern, Penn State, VCU, Northern Illinois, Indiana State and Miami University, among others.
Crider had 24 points and was named the MVP of the Division I-II North-South all-star game put on by the Ohio High School Coaches Association on Sunday.
“We’ve had no contact from UD,” Trice said. “He has reopened his recruiting and has heard from several schools, but Dayton is not one of them.”
The Flyers have four scholarships available for the senior class, but coach Archie Miller has said he’ll only take a player he thinks can help the program, not make a desperation move just to fill the roster.
Crider is a three-star recruit, according to Rivals.com. Percy Gibson and LaDontae Henton of Michigan, who pulled out of their letters-of-intent with UD, also are three-star prospects.

UD has bigger needs than small forward.

I suppose Archie Miller retaining Cornell Mann, who was the Flyers only real connection to next seasons two incoming freshmen, and who had inroads into future recruiting classes, would have been a desperate measure. Yes, let Percy and Henton go elsewhere, then down bring in a 3 star recruit for next season when 95% of all available incoming freshman talent is long gone. I’m not sure I’m getting that having only 9 scholarships players for next season is better than passing on 3 star recruits because “we don’t want to seem desperate”.

I know its early but unless or until we get recruits soon then maybe we should’ve promoted one of Gregorys assistants especially Cornell Mann who seemed to be the main reason the michigan stars were coming to UD. Wright State promoted Donlon and he has done a good job of recruiting thus far[ on paper at least]and isnt it funny how none of Gregorys assistants followed him to Georgia tech, maybe there was more going on than we think it was.

Brian Gregory is in the position to best know the capabilities of his former assistant coaches. The fact that he brought along none of them to GT says it all.

It will take at least three years to make the program his(Miller). There is no way he is not going to make this HIS team and he certainly will not let two recruits decide who will be on his coaching staff period. As much as he would like to get the two kids from Michigan, they are not a priority right now. Any success within three seasons is luck and after that we can judge his coaching skills. If they are great then he will leave UD and we will be back here in five seasons doing this all over again!

The only way Archie should have kept a coach he otherwise was not going to keep to get a recruit is if that recruit’s name was Michael Jordan. How would this be any different that putting a kid’s dad on the staff to make sure he comes to your school (Coach Cal?). This is not the way UD does things. You have to let Miller hire his own staff and get his own players. Don’t get me wrong, I’m more than a little anxious over what has happened in the last month, but you can’t hire assistant coaches just to lock up three star recruits. If you do that what are you going to do for a 5 star recruit? I’m fine with Archie not keeping Mann if he didn’t think he was a good fit. I love that y’all finally got your wish and ran BG out of town and it hasn’t even been a month, AM hasn’t coached a game and already we can hear a low grumble start to build from the people who have strong opinions but no basis for them.

What if BG stayed and these 2 Mi guys came…..think UD would have won 20 plus and maybe makes the NCAA? I think so..thanks to all the morning morning whiners, and second guessing CYO coaches

To what if - so why did Gregory leave? He wasn’t pushed out by UD nor was there a serious push from alumni to get rid of him. Most of the whiners were fans that didn’t like the type of game he played, the poor game management, and felt the Flyer Faithful were over valuing his accomplishments. In other words, those who paid the bills were happy. Those who knew basketball expressed concern. Perhaps he has extremely thin skin, or Staten’s dad threaten to kill him, or maybe he had an incredible urge to coach a second tier team in a elite conference. Who knows but he decided on his own to leave. The program was doomed the day he decided to leave and the level of doom has nothing to do with Mann or Miller. BG, whether on purpose or not, has screwed this program royally for the next three years. The blame actually belongs to and with BG

Chicago you are missing my point, sure coaches bring in their own people but this late in the game you’ve got to try and hold on to what you thought you had and dont say coaches dont hire to keep a recruit[ hint Danny Manning father at Kansas when he never held a previous college job]I want Miller to do great, just saying Butlers coach,Xaviers coachand even Smart at VCU were all assistants that got promoted and have done fine, plus I dont know what Miller makes[I’m sure DDN will eventually print it] but it would’ve been a lot cheaper tp promote Schmidt as coach!

That’s sort of my point spoon. Danny Manning was one of the best players in the country and pretty much carried a team by himself to a national championship. If we had a top 10 guy on the hook and keeping an assistant would give us a better chance to keep him, then go for it. But we are talking about two kids that aren’t really in most top 150 lists. AM is trying to shape a program not just get recruits for one year. It seems to me that most people were not happy with the overall coaching philosophy at UD so a promotion from within would probably been panned by most of the fans. I don’t know if that was the right decision or not but when you hire a new coach, he has to be able to bring in his own people. I view the UD situation as different than X, or Butler, etc… they had nationally established programs (sorry but we’re not there yet)and they wanted a continuation not a new direction. Most people (at least the vocal ones) were happy to see Gregory and his system leave, they thought GT did us a favor because we didn’t have to pay a buyout to get rid of him (for the record I’m not one of those people). Only now when the consequences become known are the same people blaming BG for leaving AND starting to question AM.

Who cares about those 2 recruits, they were gregory recruits and not a good fit for Archie anyhow. Archie will get better recruits, especially players that want to go to the NCAA every year. Everyone stop your whining and let the guy get his own players. He will be the best hire decision UD has ever made.

Good points Chicago,I also liked Gregory and I said on other blogs is that UD won 22 games by starting three guys from Dayton which isnt a hotbed for major talent. The facts are we not only lost two recruits but also two transfers and in Staten a kid that had a pretty good season despite all the confusion. Guess i’m just angry it all happened so fast, transfers, BGleaving and lost recruits all in a matter of less than a month. The nine players we have left are all decent and hopefully flyer fans will support them more than ever next year.

Spoon, This has nothing to do with how “we” feel so when you say “you” have to or “we” have , well, it’s hog wash. This is AM’s team and ZERO of us have a clue went went on with AM and Mann.Could have been uncomfortability, difference of phiplosophy, etc…..None of the UD recruits are kids that are “can’t miss” so hiring a coach you don’t feel good about can fester bad feelings for years to come.Players are players and as long as these guys can play, get along with teammates, and provide good chemistry then fine but coaches have to work together 24/7 in this business and if AM starts to sell his soul for this/that then he’ll whore himself out for other things as well. Still think we get the Gibson kid and he’ll bring in a couple very nice players, trust me here, very soon.Everyone is anxious but you don’t drive on a new driveway till it hardens..

Retaining Mann to try to keep the two kids from Michigan would be water off a sinking ship. When you lose your head coach (regardless of the reason), two existing players, two high profile recruits, as well as your “marque” senior, it’s time for the program to hit the “reset button”, which is what UD has done. Time to put ALL of this in the rearview mirror and move on. A few tough seasons lay ahead, but with only 2 Big Dance appearances in the last 20 years, what’s the big deal anyway. Flyer fans are infinitely patient! Yes, we want an NCAA winning program that consistently makes it to the next level, and I’m willing to wait a few years to see if Archie can take the program where Jughead could not.

I agree totally with Rudy Flyer. BG wasn’t asked to leave, he left because he chose to leave, and probably at least part of the reason is that he knew he was leaving a mess behind.

Hey what if , BG Is not a good coach. the only way he could have been successful at Dayton was to recruit so well to make up for his lack of coaching. No offensive plan, no player development ( still feel bad for CW) poor foul shooting, weave to nowhere..I for one am so glad he is gone. Go Flyers !

Where did Billy The Kid end up anyway? Citing X, VCU, and Butler promoting their assistants isn’t an accurate read in the UD situation. There was NO SYSTEM to continue, at least one that worked. B4 we strive to the NCAA each year, let’s defend home court on senior night, and finish in the top 2-3 of the A-10, then worry about tournaments! If Schmidt or Mann had a better/different coaching system, wouldn’t some of it have rubbed off on BG? Wouldn’t he/they have game planned - in-game adjusted better? Developed players? If those 2 were close to the players, wouldn’t they have helped defuse the internal strife? I 2 uneasy with 2 leaving & 2 saying “no thanks”, but it’s now Archie’s staff & team & let’s see if he can win 1 for the seniors!

BG just used UD as a stepping stone. I wish nothing but the worst for that a-hole.
