Former UD point guard now looking at Louisville

Juwan Staten, the Dayton native and former University of Dayton point guard, is scheduled to visit Louisville on Tuesday as he searches for a new school, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported.

The newspaper said that Staten is also considering Texas, South Carolina, Miami and Baylor.

Staten had previously announced he would transfer from Dayton to Penn State. Then, PSU coach Ed DeChellis left Penn State for Navy on Monday, causing Staten to reopen his transfer.

Staten told the Courier-Journal: “The program is definitely something I can relate to because that’s the way I’ve been playing most of my life. They like to get up and be aggressive on defense, and that’s something I like, too.”

He’s not good enough to play at UD, and he thinks he’s good enough to play at Louisville?

After what his dad just said in his latest interview, who in the world would recruit this kid? He’s actually fortunate that the Penn State situation has become a distraction from his less than graceful departure from UD.

the wide open style of the ville suits him much better…lots of shots lots of turnovers. the UD style dictates one t/o can lose the game

I still don’t understand why he doesn’t declare for the NBA draft. He’s ready right now. All he needs to work on is his shot, his defense, his attitude, his leadership, and his dad.

Now starting at guard for Sinclair Community College - Juwan Staten. Or maybe that was Miami-Middletown, or Edison State or Central State. The Juwan/Billy show has been all over the net for a couple days. As usual, Harris has his head up his A$$

Defense? Wow. He never explains the reason for his poor shooting. I like Red’s idea—go straight to the NBA. You are sooo ready and your Dad can be your agent.

this young kid has a lot of haters….i wonder why the commentors are so hateful…young people that are doing positive things need support..the kid is not doing anything illegal…hopefully he makes the right decisions for himself..and if he doesnt..he will learn from his mistakes..we all do..

at NYC, thing is, this kid threw his coach under the bus, publicly. What new coach will look at that as a strong character attribute? He could have left gracefully, but chose not to. The reason he was an assist leader was due to BG - THAT is his only strong statistic. He took the 3rd most shots on the team, and well, shooting percentages don’t lie. There is delusional thinking going on in Juwan and Daddy’s minds…period. BG utilized Juwan in the way he deemed best for the program, and gave him every opportunity to SHOOT… and Juwan missed those shots. Period. When Juwan did “wheel and deal” he dribbled into oblivion, got shots blocked, missed CW and CJ on fast breaks. Come on. No defense of this kid, whatsoever. He expected to be GIVEN something that must be EARNED - and that is RESPECT and TRUST of your teammates and coaches. I’d say BG gave him more than a fair chance at success - and Juwan turned around and just bit that hand that fed him. THAT, to me, shows a complete lack of respect, gratitude, humility, and maturity. Regardless of what folks thought of BG’s offensive system, it’s impossible to say that he didn’t give Juwan a chance to be successful. More than a chance.

since Juwan and daddy find the DeChellis style of basketball to their liking, why not follow the coach to the U.S. Naval Academy? Let’s see, the four years at Navy + the five years of military commitment might help Juwan grow up.

If Louisville, Texas, Baylor, and USC are interested in him today, were they interested before he “chose” Penn St. If yes, why would you pick Penn St. Something doesn’t add up here. I was willing to give this guy some slack because I believe BG was as responsible as the Staten’s for the issues but this keeps getting more and more bizarre. Wonder if Dad would tell coach Pitino how to use the kid. They could work the details out at some Italian restaurant.

This is really something. I’m looking at the Chairmanship of of Microsoft. That doesn’t mean anything will happen for either of us. This is still the guy who can’t shoot, can’t play defense and had his lunch eaten by every point guard in the A 10, including the freshman from Duquesne.

I agree with everything that bub said. It’s no secret that I didn’t much care for BG, but he did give JS every chance to excel on the court. The kid was just in way over his head.I believe the same could be said for the coach.

i would never want to play for a ud sports team. yalls fans are fine when things are right but one problem and yall fall off the bandwagon. staten maybe a dumb kid but he is not even your problem anymore and yall still give the kid crap. i do not get it…the emotions shown in this resemble jealousy, hatred and ignorance. if that is what yall want to be known for then go ahead, most if not all ud students are already known as snobs with bad drinking habits. grow some…and move on, only reason to continue to dwell on such a stupid kid is to use it as a disguise for your concerns about your programs decline into the A-10 basement.

I understand why people are upset with Juwan but to say he was in over his head at UD is just dumb. He was a solid freshman point guard, with lots of room for improvement. He started every game, I think, and was 27th in the country in assists and had a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio. Obviously, he is not a great jump shooter yet but he has 3 years to get better. What I find most amusing is that most of the fans complained because they didn’t think players got better under BG but when Staten says that is one of the main reasons he is leaving everyone jumps on him. He may never be a star but he should be a solid college point guard where ever he ends up. I don’t think Louisville is the right spot unless he grows up a lot. Pitino expects a lot from his point guards. More than Juwan is capable of now, but if he listens and matures a bit Pitino will make him a very good point.

to hank - your comments are dead on. He was a decent freshman point guard with a ton of promise if given the proper direction and coaching. BG wasn’t going to be that guy so I agree with his moving. BUT, why go to Penn St and now the comments from the family make him sound like a spoiled self serving brat. That’s my issue with this and it appears that his family is fueling this stupidity. I was in Atlanta when Marbury played for Tech and there is a lot here that sounds like the Marbury family situation with numerous coaches. The only difference is “Starbury” was significantly more gifted than Juwan will ever be and how well did that Marbury story end? Juwan needs to get a degree and start working on a backup non basketball plan.

To the writer who said this blog will eventually get to Pitino and Louisville, get real dont you realize every coach scrutinizes every recruit and already have heard about what comments were said ? One thing BGsaid before he left was he wasnt gonna get in any arguments about the Statens and he has kept his word.To say BG lied, how? when Juwann played the second most minutes on the team and was a starter all year long. This is getting ugly. DAYTON DAILY NEWS NEEDS TO QUIT REPORTING EVERY MOVE THE KID MAKES AND FOR THAT MATTER QUIT SAYING A RECRUIT IS INTERESTED IN UD ,then goes to another school[Philmore who chose X over ud]Quit quoting Staten sr[who himself is an educator] and let them move on and wish them well.

The pertinent question is “are they looking at him?” No way UofL or Texas uses a scholarship on Juwan..maybe walk on with a chance to earn a scholarship but that is as close as he is getting to Pitino or Barnes. This is non-story.

Juwan couldn’t shoot from more than 5 feet from the basket, couldn’t play defense, couldn’t make free throws, couldn’t find the open man on 3 on 1 breakouts, and the only reason he had as many assists as he did is because the guys he passed the ball to made dunks. I rest my case.

Does anyone besides me think we need to go back to true college scholarship basketball, (and this applies to football as well) where players are actual college material with the potential to graduate with a meaningful degree that is not handed to them on a silver platter. Time for the NBA and NFL to get their own minor leagues so these wanna-be’s have somewhere to go without being spoiled brats on the college campus.
