The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is looking for a few good men and women — to help pay them for spaying and neutering their pets on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
It’s also a way of paying them back for their duty to their country.
Using grants from Teradata Corp. and Shumsky Enterprises, the Humane Society will provide free spaying and neutering to the first 75 veterans and active duty soldiers who register in person at the Humane Society, 1661 Nicholas Road in Dayton.
About half the slots are filled but there has to be more people out there who need some help preventing more unwanted kittens and puppies, which is a huge problem in the Miami Valley.
To qualify, the vet or soldier must provide proof of service.
If you know a vet or an active duty soldier, let them know about the program.

If your dog has potential, it’s time to start training for the hot dog bobbing competition that will be part of Greene County”s Howl-o-Ween Dog Pawty on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The annual event brings dogs and their owners out for a fall fun event at the Fairgrounds Recreation Center, 210 Fairgrounds Road in Xenia from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be all kinds of canine contests, including costume, tricks for treats, best radio voice and hot dog bobbing.

The idea behind the hot dog bobbing contest is to see which dog can bob for hot dogs floating in water and then eat the largest number.

Eating may not be a problem but will your dog dunk his face into the water?
Admission is free with a $1 donation for each dog.

For more information, visit www.co.greene.oh.us/parks or call (937) 562-7440.

Petside.com has released a list of what they consider the top ten dog parks in the United States.
The rankings were based on hours of operation, cost to get in, features and how much fun there is to be had for dogs and owners alike.
Here’s the list:
10. Happy Tails Dog Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It’s free, so are the poop bags. There’s water. But it closes at dark.
9. Rocky Top Dog Park in Princeton, N.J. There’s a pond, puppy play groups and a membership cost that starts at $306 a year.
8. Ossining Dog Park in Ossining, N.Y. There are boulders to climb, a doggie drinking fountain and it’s free.
7. Tompkins Square Park in New York City. Renovated last year, there are three pools and it’s open until midnight.
6. Bea Arthur Dog Park in Norfolk, Va. Open 24/7, there’s a picnic area and swimming with ramp access.
5. Shaggy Pines Dog Park in Ada, Mich. There are 20 acres, music, a pond and membership fees start at $256 a year.
4. Fort Woof Dog Park in Fort Worth, Texas. Free, events like Barktoberfest and lighted at night.
3. Jackson’s Howlabaloo Dog Park in Edinboro, Pa. 58 acres with paw showers, an area for special needs dogs, creeks and ponds. Membership is $268 a year.
2. Dog Wood Park of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Fla. Frisbee fields, a sand pile for digging, and a place where kids and dogs can mingle. $289 a year.
1. Point Isabel Dog Park in Richmond, Calif. Lots of free activities, great scenery, swimming, hiking and dogs and owners can eat together in the cafe.
What’s the best dog park you’ve ever been to?

It’s time to start planning your pet’s costume for the 4th annual Happy Howl-o-ween Dog Walk and Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, Oct. 17 in Indian Riffle Park in Kettering.

The event is sponsored by the Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association. If you register by Oct. 2, walkers get a goodie bag. Register at www.mvpta.com or call 286-0028 for details.

The Blessing of the Animals starts at 11 a.m. The walk starts at 11:05 a.m. and the costume parade starts at 12:30 p.m.

By the way, not all animals love costumes. If you pet is okay with it, fine. But don’t force an animal into a funny costume. And always be careful not to block the pet’s vision with a costume or let something dangle that the pet could trip over or become wrapped up in. Some pets will panic if they feel trapped and try to flee and may harm themselves.

All animals are welcome — but they must be leashed, current on vaccinations and not aggressive towards humans or other dogs. BE honest. If your pet hates other dogs, don’t bring him into a situation where someone could be endangered.

And remember to clean up after your pet.

Today, National Dog Day, is a day to celebrate our canine companions.

According to the National Dog Day Web site, the day is “celebrated August 26th annually and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.”

You are also encouraged to donate to local shelters and rescues to help them in their efforts to care for and adopt out dogs to forever homes in honor of the day.

So give your dogs some extra hugs today and maybe even a little extra treat or special dinner to celebrate what he or she means to you in your life.

Alpo has kicked off a campaign to find some real dogs who can tell others about just letting dogs be dogs.

Well, the dogs won’t be telling it but the owners will — and they could have their stories published.

Alpo thinks a more common sense attitude is taking hold - mostly because pet owners can’t afford pricey toys and spas for their pets. They cite a survey that says more and more dog owners are simply giving their dogs a good belly rub or taking a walk, rather than expensive material goods.

Their contest is called Real Dogs Tell It Like It Is Contest and wants owners to share their favorite stories in 300 words or less what makes their dogs happiest. Is it rolling in the mud? Chasing a ball? How does your dog express his inner dog?

The contest runs through Sept. 28
Submit your story at www.ALPOTellitlikeitis.com and you must include a color photo of your pet.

The judges are looking for the best description of a real dog behavior, originality and creativity.

I have to say I am very disappointed that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Michael Vick allowing him to possibly play this year, with conditions. He has to find a team first, but I was hoping Goodell would treat the dog fighting conviction more seriously than he apparently has. The “conditions” are pretty subjective.

Not only is dog fighting animal cruelty, but drugs and illegal gambling are also involved in most cases. I realize Vick “served his time,” but I think the punishment was pretty lenient. Animal cruelty needs to have harsher minimum sentences, IMHO.

If you would like to write the commissioner and express your feelings on the matter, here is his address. I know I am going to.

Montgomery County has re-opened both sides of the Bark Park - after part of it was closed for re-seeding.
The dog park, at 6794 Webster St., behind the Animal Resource Center, is open seven days a week from dawn to dusk for licensed dogs and their owners.
Animal Resource Center Director Mark Kumpf is encouraging pet owners to stay on paths and only let pets run on the grass to keep down the wear and tear.
If that doesn’t work, part of the park may have to be closed again.
On Sunday, July 11, the Animal Resource Center will hold its Mingle with Our Mutts event, featuring breed rescue grups and animals available for adoption. The event is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The 11th annual SICSA Walk for Strays is Saturday, June 6 at Delco Park in Kettering.

You can register online or register at the event starting at 9am. You can download the brochure with more information and a registration form here (PDF).

The walk is 1.2 miles and begins at 9:30. The money raised benefits homeless animals.

There will be contests for pet costume, ugliest dog, best dressed dog, best trick and cutest matching outfit.

Microchipping will be available for just $10. Take it from someone who knows after having this done at my vet recently, $10 is a steal for this service.

There will be a photo booth, fun and games for the dogs and food will be available from vendors, as well as plenty of fun items available for purchase for you and your pet.

This is always a popular event and for a good cause. Plus, the weather will be great! So head out for a nice walk with your dog on a Saturday morning with a whole bunch of other crazy animal lovers. It’s sure to be a good time.
