I was checking out the pet supplies at my local Big Lots this week and found they have the Shed Ender grooming tool for just $5.00! I had purchased one recently at Rite Aid for $14.99, so I am bummed, but I wanted to pass that along. Not all stock is available at all Big Lots, but might be worth a trip to your neighborhood Big Lots to see if you can get one for $5.00.

If you haven’t seen this on the news lately, Gibson, a Great Dane, has gone down in the record books as World’s Tallest Dog alive.

Gibson stands at 42.2” tall, but when he stands on his hind legs, he is around 7 feet tall!

He has his own Web site and you can see a video here.

That is one big lap dog!

On Friday April 4, special correspondent Lisa Ling will appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show with an investigative report on puppy mills. Winfrey says the show is “for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment.”

Oprah is dedicating the show to her late Cocker Spaniel Sophie, who died last month due to kidney failure. Oprah’s 2-year-old Golden Retriever Gracie died last July when she choked on a ball she was playing with, so it has been a rough several months for Oprah and her pets.

Although Oprah hasn’t bought any of her dogs from a puppy mill, but after seeing the show has decided to get any future dogs from animal shelters.

If you like traveling with your dog, you may want to head to the Big Apple. According to the magazine Animal Fair, New York city is the most pet-friendly in the country due in part to the many restaurants and hotels in the area that allow pets.

Delta Airlines, Volvo, Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort in Scottsdale, Arizona and The Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas also received awards from Animal Fair for being pet-friendly.

Do you travel with your dog(s)? Where do you like to go?

If you have seen the Pedigree TV commercial with the dog Echo in the shelter and being passed by, you know how heart-wrenching it was.

Apparently, the Pedigree ad campaign was very successful in more ways than one. Pedigree was happy to see dog food sales rise, but even more exciting was the interest and awareness it has raised for shelter dogs. Per an article from MediaPost Communications, there was so much interest in Echo’s story, Pedigree was compelled to show how Echo fared.

Echo, a Border collie mix, who struggled to find a home was adopted out to a loving home, as were 12 other dogs featured in the six-week campaign.

You may have seen the sequel to the first commercial. It begins with showing Echo in the shelter and the line, “I don’t know how I got here, (screen goes dark) but I’ll never forget the day I got out.” It’s followed by Echo in her new home running around playing and enjoying a belly rub.

The Pedigree company launched a non-profit foundation dedicated to providing grants to shelters around the country that has raised $750,000 so far.

The original ads were targeted around the Westminster Dog Show, but they expanded it since it has done so well, not only for the company, but for shelter dogs everywhere.

To find out more about the Pedigree Adoption Drive, go to DogsRule.com.

And always, if you are interested in rescuing a dog, visit your area shelters and rescue organizations.

Brian’s cat’s name is Wally and, according to the caption, the owner suffers from depression and Wally helps lift his spirits. While Wally is a cat and this blog is devoted to dogs, there are also dogs who were finalists in the contest. And who doesn’t like looking at cute pets?

I always find it nice to see people from close by win national contests. It is exciting that our area gets represented. And I also love to see the various ways our pets help us through life in so many unexpected ways.

You can see the grand prize winner and all the finalists here. Wally is number 3 in the slide show.

The Humane Society of the United States held the contest to raise awareness of the importance to spay and neuter pets. The contest raised tens of thousands of dollars to benefit the spay/neuter efforts. The actual Spay Day USA was Feb. 26, 2008.

If you use iGoolge or decide to use it after checking it out, there are several dog themes to customize your tab pages.

Some of the themes change throughout the day, depending on the time. For instance, Louie the Labrador Puppy sleeps in the evening hours.

I use iGoogle and love it. Not only can I keep news and fun widgets easily accessible, the themes add a nice personal touch and are fun to watch change throughout the day.

Louie the Labrador Puppy
Dog Theme
Webb Puppies (Chocolate Labs)
Dogs
Dalmations
Toy Dog

Just sign into your iGoogle account, and click on the “Select theme” link on the right side of the page. Then you can search through the available themes. When you find one you want, just click the “Add it now” button and you are set.

If you get tired of these themes, I’m sure more will be added by users. Or you can go with one of the non-dog related themes. But why would you want to?!

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race started on Saturday, March 1. The race usually last between 8 and 15 days.

According to Wikipedia, the “Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, usually just called the “Iditarod”, is an annual sled dog race in Alaska, where mushers and teams of dogs cover 1,049 miles (1,853 km) in eight to fifteen days. The Iditarod began in 1973 as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams, evolving into the highly competitive race it is today.”

The Iditarod commemorates the “Great Race of Mercy,” in which serum to combat a diphtheria epidemic threatening Nome was raced by dog sled teams from Nenana, Alaska to Nome. The famous dog Balto was the lead dog of the sled team that ran the final leg into Nome. The team endured a blizzard that prevented the musher, Gunnar Kaasen, from even seeing the dogs due to whiteout conditions. But Balto held the scent trail and led them and the serum safely to Nome to save many in the city from diphtheria. A statue of Balto stands in New York’s Central Park in tribute to the dogs that made the historic run to save the lives of the people in Nome.

The official race Web site is very nice and includes the latest news and information from the race as well as a map tracking the teams’ progress and more. It’s worth a visit.

Go doggies go!

Okay, maybe not hounds, because Dalmations are in the Non-sporting group according to the AKC, and not the Hound group, but you get the idea.

Yes, Disney is at it again with their marketing genius of offering DVDs for a limited time. This time the original animated version of 101 Dalmations is being re-released on March 4, this time in a two-disc platinum edition.

The film, based on the book “The Hundred and One Dalmations” by Dodie Smith and originally released in theaters in 1961 (how old do you feel now?!), has been digitally remastered for better picture quality. Included on the DVD are a Virtual Dalmatians game and 101 Pop-Up Trivia Facts.

Who can resist a whole litter of little puppies scampering around?! Parents Pongo and Perdita have their hands full with this brood of 15. And on top of that they play Cupids to their human masters.

I always thought this was a good Disney film, dog-lover or not. And it introduced one of Disney’s most infamous villains in Cruella De Vil. (And probably one of the best named, combining cruel and devil.) The character was partly based on a combination of actresses Betty Davis, Rosalind Russell and Tallulah Bankhead.

There was even a Simpson’s episode (Two Dozen & One Greyhounds) based on the story, where Mr. Burns steals puppies from Bart and Lisa, wanting to make a coat out of the dogs’ fur. Things don’t end as badly for Mr. Burns as they did for Cruella, however.

The film is rated G, 79 minutes long and, as always with Disney, available only for a limited time.Sure to be enjoyed by the whole family, 101 Dalmations is a classic and must-have for any dog-lover and family with small, and not so small, children. (Or at least kids at heart.)

One other dog movie note: Today (March 4) is the birthday of actress Catherine O’Hara, who played Cookie Guggelman Fleck in Best in Show. She was also in other films such as Home Alone and Beetle Juice and was a regular on “Second City TV.”

Do you like 101 Dalmations? What is your favorite dog-related film?

I do not need a Groundhog to tell me when spring will come. My dogs let me know - by shedding. It seems about a week ago the fur seemed to just start jumping off of them. I have increased their brushings and I have increased the use of my vacuum. The fur is everywhere. Fur tumbleweeds gently roll across my floors and I have lost count of the number of lint roller rolls I have gone through.

Although the vernal equinox marks the start of Spring on March 20 this year, the meteorological start of spring is March 1, and my dogs seem to know that.

As I brush my Corgi/Chow mix Lexi every other day, I am amazed at how much fur comes off that dog. I am shocked she still has any fur left! I think the fur I have brushed out of her in a week would be the equivalent of a whole other dog. We will be moving to daily brushings this weekend.

Hannah, the Beagle/Bassett mix, is not as bad, but I have still had to increase the amount I brush her.

I use three different brush types when brushing my dogs. My favorite is the Kong Zoom Groom. It is a rubber-nubbed brush that really seems to grab the loose fur and pull it out from the coat. It doesn’t hurt the dogs and does just pull the loose fur. The Zoom Broom is also good to use in the bath to lather up the dogs. I follow the Zoom Broom up to actually collect the fur that is pulled out with a wire-bristle slicker brush. The slicker brush also gets the undercoat around Lexi’s hind quarters. Finally on Lexi I use the natural bristle side of my two-side finishing brush to catch any last loose fur on top of her coat.

I use the Zoom Broom first on Hannah then switch to the finishing brush on her. I don’t need the wire-bristle brush on her because her coat is short.

I purchased a ShedEnder last week at Rite Aid, but have only used it halfheartedly once. The dogs seemed a little afraid of it for some reason. I’ll try sneaking it in when we are in the middle of grooming instead of just using it. Maybe they won’t notice it then.

I have tried this rubber “glove” before, but I couldn’t control it very well. The dogs were more interested in smelling it than letting me groom them.

Happy grooming to all the owners of shedding dogs out there. It looks like it’s going to be a long, fur-flying spring!

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, some soldiers have been working to rescue dogs they “adopt” in Iraq and get them back to the United States.

If you want to help other dogs like Liberty and K-Pot and Charlie, you can donate to the SPCA to help them in their efforts.

SPCA International helps dogs go “from war zone to a real home” with Operation Baghdad Pups. The donations go towards transportation, veterinary costs and other costs associated with bringing these dogs befriended by U.S. Military to the United States. The money also goes to further the mission of SPCA International to stop euthanizing adoptable and healthy animals.

This story about a stray dog in Iraq who followed a Marine over 65 miles is just a nice story. The dog was befriended by Marine Maj. Brian Dennis, who would feed it scrapes of food. He named the dog Nubs because his ears had been cut. The dog would follow the Marine around on his patrols.

Dennis found Nubs one day on the brink of death after he had been stabbed by a screwdriver and was nearly freezing. He nursed the dog back to health. But then it was time for the Marines to move back to their command post around 65 miles away. The dog was left behind, but amazingly the dog tracked them all that way and found Dennis.

Since military policy prohibits having pets in war zones, Dennis, with the help of family, friends and a Jordanian veterinarian, was able to get Nubs sent to the United States to a colleague of Dennis’ who will help train the dog. The dog will be reunited with the Marine when Dennis gets home in March.

Did you know there was such a thing as Pet Dental Health month? Well, there is and February is the month. Granted, February is almost over, but I still wanted to bring it to your attention.

It was started to bring awareness to the dental health of our pets.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than 85% of dogs and cats that are at least 4 years old have periodontal disease. Just like in humans, the way to avoid that is to brush your pet’s teeth.

I admit I don’t brush my dogs’ teeth, but I do give them Nylabones and other toys that are supposed to help remove some of the plaque and tartar. Hannah, my 4-year-old dog, has some yellowing, but really not too much considering I don’t brush her teeth. Lexi is 2-1/2 and her teeth are still bright white. But my dogs are very aggressive chewers and love their Nylabones, so they chew on them a lot.

If I start brushing their teeth, it will be teaching old dogs new tricks. They don’t even really like it when I just pull their cheeks back to check on their teeth, let alone sticking my finger in their mouth to brush their teeth. It may be as much trauma as nail clipping! But maybe not if the toothpaste tastes like liver. Ick.

I have heard of music with human heartbeats that is supposed to calm dogs, but never have I heard of a song specifically, and only, for dogs … until now.

“A Very Silent Night” is a song played at a frequency only dogs can hear. The real kicker is that the song reached number 1 on the New Zealand record charts at Christmas.

According to the article, reactions from dogs vary. There is even one report of a dog destroying a radio.

There is a purpose to the song, if not entertainment for your pooch. It was developed as a fund raiser for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The article states that “Around NZ$22,000 ($17,300) has been raised by the disc’s sale.” Looks like it worked!

You can watch the video on YouTube, but don’t expect to hear anything yourself. Turn up the volume and see if your dogs react. I’m going to try it on mine tonight!

They may even bring the CD to the U.S., so look for it around the holidays.

And on a related note, I did try out Canine Lullabies on my dogs and it did seem to settle them down. There are audio samples on their Web site you can listen to. And yes, humans can hear these! And they offer complimentary copies for “Humane Societies, Veterinary Clinics, Shelters, Zoos and other organizations dedicated to the protection, rehabilitation and general welfare of animals” according to their Web site.
