The buzz on unions and money
Some really good education bloggers have picked up on my recent posts about speeches by author Jonathan Kozol and NEA president Reginald Weaver, and about the the techno-cluelessness of both of them.
You can find commentary about Kozol from Jenny D, an ex-journalist turned education doctoral candidate and all-around education wonk-at-large.
And speaking of wonks, it was The Education Wonks blog that first called for NEA to start its own blog, like the UFT’s excellent Edwize blog, and the Wonks have weighed in with their take on union blogs, noting that the other big teacher’s union, the AFT, has now launched a blog about NCLB.
And for fun (especially if you are on the political right), see Thespis Journal, who thought Weaver’s lack of Internet savvy was worthy of a top 10 “posts of the week” ranking.

Kurt brings up an interesting point about unions and the government workforce. A few years ago I read and interesting commentary in Investors Business Daily about union growth in the US. Definitely, the most active and growing unions are public employees while union membership in the private sector has been on the decline for years. Last week, USA Today had an interesting cover story about the government employee pension plans, including teachers, that are essentially unaffordable for the taxpayers.By Kurt Grieshop

NEA[National Extortion Assn.]I am still trying to figure out how our government[bound by law]is to take a neutral stance on unions, yet has managed to encourage domestic employers to eradicate them through NAFTA and GATT—yet will do nothing about their own over-priced work force!! How much cheaper and better government could we get if it had to compete with true market forces like it expects us to ? We need MORE professional liars in power
