Obama: Let illegals get aid for college

(Obama campaigning Tuesday in Londonderry, N.H.)
On Tuesday, Barack Obama called on California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger not to veto a bill that would make illegal immigrants who graduate high school eligible for college aid.
Schwarzenegger has vetoed a similar measure once before. Obama co-sponsored a similar measure when he was in the Illinois legislature.
Also check out this story from a Georgia-based writer which makes a passing reference to Obama’s education positions but compares the Democratic senator to Ronald Reagan.

Mary, Reagan did not put mentally ill people out on the streets. It was the response to multiple lawsuits brought by the ACLU. Carter’s presidency was a disaster.By joe mamma

Mary….Carter was a dismal failure as president. Interest Rates in the high teens, high inflation, double digit unemployment, and the Iranian hostage crisis…not to mention the music (yech). It was bad. Obama is more of the same on the Democratic side. He wants more government. Just like Hillary Clinton, deep down he’s a socialist.By Jcason

Exactly, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with legal immigration. I have had friends in the past, hispanic legals, who have told me how hard things are because everyone paints them all with the same brush. I have never met someone who went through the legal process and still supported benefits for criminals.By Judy

Another ridiculous liberal scheme involving handouts for votes. These politicians don’t care if they sell this country and its taxpayers down the river as long as they are elected or re-elected. Handouts like these draw the Latin American voters to the dems, and Obama knows it. Couple it together with Hillary’s recent statements of $5000 for every child, or government payouts into 401 K’s. Do we want this kind of fiscal responsibility, our country and taxpayers bankrupt while they try to determine the right combination of bribes to get elected. How about letting me keep my money instead of raising taxes, and I will decide where it is spent? It won’t be on education for illegals, that is for sure.By Laura

Well, one decision has been made for me regarding the presidential election. Obama won’t get my vote. I have no problem with legal immigrants. I do resent, as another poster said, the fact that because my husband and I work our kids don’t receive financial aid. There is no way we could possibly afford to send them to any place other than the local state university. Why should illegal aliens receive free college educations when we can’t provide a reasonable higher education for citizens born here? Something is seriously wrong.By whatever

Please be careful who we vote into office next time around. It is not fair to take money away from honest, hardworking citizens to fund the education of criminals. Many of our own citizens have trouble paying for college (families like ours that make too much for financial aide, but don’t make enough to pay outright… and we don’t like to take out loans), why should illegals get it for free??? I think that these criminals deserve nothing more than a one way ticket back to where they came from. (and no, I am not against LEGAL immigration… I admire those that work hard to get into our country legally).By rediculous

I think the illegals are already getting way too much from my taxes. I have 5 kids and none of the 3 college student get any federal help. Why? Because we are legal, US born multigenerational citizens and because we work instead of living on government subsities (government subsities that the illegals ARE getting). It’s amazing what our country does for criminals (legals and illegals)…. felons in prison for life are getting free college educations, free housing and being paid for doing ‘jobs’ in the prison that should be compulsory and unpaid. Yet those of us are law abiding, legal residents (not only citizens necesarily) get nothing. My future son in law is from another country. He is here legally and as another poster said, it has been a long, expensive and ardorous process. He doesn’t get a free ride any more than those of the rest of us responsible people.By David

We have been paying to educate them illegally coming across the border daily in the border states. We have been paying for decades for healthcare for whoever can make it across the border to have their baby delivered in the US hospitals since government decided that born here makes you a resident here. People accept them working for lower wages to do the work that our pampered welfare/benefits recipients won’t do because they can make money staying at home, having babiees and cashing our checks for support. The businesses benefit by paying lower wages with more money profit for their pay for management and owners. Why shouldn’t we pay for college. We’ve let them have everything else. They even count in the census to give more representatives for the states with lots of illegals like California. That means also they get more electoral votes to determine the next election!!! I need to find a way to get a check for not working like many of our citizens.By DPS Parent

As alegal alien going through the long, expensive and somewhat tedious form-filling requirements that citizenship requires all this talk of pandering to these criminals infuriates me. And yes, they are criminals; they broke the country’s immigration laws to get and/or to stay here and, as I understand it, you break the law you’re a criminal.By Jcason

I think Americans and the media need to be reminded we are electing a president, not a friend and drinking buddy. I do not think the Reagan administation was good for the country, despite his good ole boy charisma - trickle down economics, social conservatism, putting the mentally ill out on the streets as homeless, etc. I wonder if Carter had been relected, instead, if our country might have advanced on the environment and in a lot of other areas.By Bocephus

Why should Californians have to pay taxes to send illegal immigrants to college ? This is excactly why we really need to be carefull who we elect to the be our next President. Its like our politicians are in a race to see who can give the rest of our country away the fastest.
