John McCain’s secret Sinclair meeting

mccainvisit.jpg

(John McCain at Young’s Jersey Dairy Thursday)

Over at her new On Campus blog about colleges and universities, my colleague Stephanie Gottschlich writes that presidential candidate John McCain made a second, secret stop after visiting Young’s Jersey Dairy in Greene County Wednesday.

McCain’s other stop was a private fund-raising event for key local supporters. The strange thing is that the closed, invitiation-only event was held at Sinclair Community College. The school didn’t even mention McCain’s visit to anyone until AFTER he had headed out of town.

Gottschilich asks a simple question: should a public college host a closed door event with a candidate for president? Especially given that McCain met with the college president and reportedly discussed important local issues related to colleges and workforce development?

Did Sinclair have a responsibility to open that meeting up or politely recommend that McCain find somewhere else to do his fund-raising? A chance to meet the potential next president seems like a missed opportunity for Sinclair students, perhaps one that they should have had?

Go on over to On Campus and give some feedback.

Lisa is correct. When you hear the liberal media say record corporate profits, it is misleading. Do you know the difference between profit and profit margin? There is a difference. The liberals know that most people are not going to understand business or economics. You are repeating what has been told to you in newspapers and TV. Do you know what it takes to be a CEO? Do you understand what a CEO does for companies? In order to get a CEO, you have to be competitive in wages and benefits. You are picking and choosing who can be rich and who cannot which is socialism. Is it fair for Hollywood to make millions off of one movie? Maybe we should tell them not to make so much money so movie tickets are cheaper and everyone can afford to go the movies. Or they should give their pay to the lighting people. Is it fair for lawyers to make so much money? If you think a company is not fair, don’t buy their stuff. Let the free market and private sectors take care of it. Sure there is going to be white collar crime. It is only a few companies out of thousands that ruin it for everyone. They will get what is coming to them. You never hear the good stuff on the news. For instance, Walmart is the most generous company in the world in charitable giving. Oh, I made a bad investment! The government should bail me out. I hired a bad contractor for a remodeling job and skipped out on me and I lost $14,000. I think the government should give me what I lost. This is not what our founding fathers wanted goverment to be. It should not be entitlement programs. This all started with FDR.

Charterschoolhater. Corporate tax rates in the US are among the highest in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxratesaroundtheworld Also…corporations do not pay taxes, they view it as a cost of doing business and simply pass most of that to their customers.

Lisa, while I agree with some of your points, you need to curb your enthusiasm with some additional reality. Our form of capitalism also has runaway greed and corruption. Do you honestly think our CEOs deserve all the millions they get even while driving corporations into backruptcy and financial failures. CEOs in other countries do not get these ridiculous pay packages and golden parachutes. As far as medical, we have people dying or shut out because of our system, too. I generally stay away because the system has bad science and bad kharma. The doctors seem to be there to mainly retail pharmacueticals and exams that businesses get rich off of. Is it really good capitalism to make people well? You are also turning a blind eye to the fraud and greed in the mortgage industry. As pointed out on the front of today’s USA Today, none of our major presidential candidates have ever run a company or government. USA Today’s editorial today is about the big spending plans of the two democratic candidates. You might want to read it and will probably agree with some of those points. Did Dayton Daily News endorse Obama because he plans on being the biggest spender?

I would not vote for Hilary or Obama. What is scary is that they want to take us from a capitalistic society to socialism. They think they know what is best for you. They want to keep you dependent on government, because you do not know how to take care of yourself. That is how they think. The reason why our jobs are moving to other countries is because the US has the 2nd highest corporate taxes and tons of government regulations. The dems want to tell our companies how much profits they are allowed to make. Not to mention, they want to take care of us instead of letting us have freedom to be individuals. They want to go after banks and credit card companies, because you made the bad choice to charge for your lifestyle and because you made the choice to get into a large mortgage without a down payment so you could have your lifestyle. The dems are for universal healthcare. People please see what is happening over in the UK and Canada. You cannot choose your doctor. There are long waiting lists that stretch for months. If you have cancer and need surgery right away, you will have to wait months until it is your turn. People die because of the waits. A young boy just died with leukemia and went into a coma while waiting his turn in the ambulance. Doctors are leaving England to practice medicine in India! People from England and Canada come to the US for their healthcare. Instead of going after the oil companies and the like, how about the republicans going after the colleges? $500 for books a quarter and high tuitions and 6 figure paid professors. How about lowering cost so everyone can go to college without having large loans to pay off afterwards? The dems will never go after the universities because the libs own them and they are the dem’s special interests. I am for individual freedom and free markets. Capitalism is what made this country great! Look at how much better off you are in the US than the other countries in Europe. They are moving to capitalism and we are going backwards. You are rewarded for making the right choices. People need to stop being lazy and start taking responsibility for their actions instead of blaming everyone else and expecting the government to bail them out. No one said life was easy.

Hey Thomas, Here we go again we McCain. This is the same McCain who allows lobbyists to be on his campaign staff. What is scary about McCain is that he seems to be a leader with a pay for access policy. What ever happended to the fact the government is for the people by the people? I said the people, Not the Banks, Insurance companies, Oil Companies, and a slew of other special interest groups that McCain and his fellow republicans have allowed to write out laws. The were bought and paid for, and allowed to write the laws by special interests, for special interests. By the way I caught a snippet of the Ad for Obama. Are we really giving tax breaks to companies that move out of the US. If we are why. If that is true then whoever allowed this to happen is a crook. Probably McCain is one of those people who voted for it. I’m voting for Obama for change.

Get the story right, Scott: 1) He rented the room. 2)It was not a fundraiser, it was a private meeting. The story should be thanks Senator McCain for the investment in Sinclair, we have another levy, we need the money.

Sinclair seemingly existed before David552 and served a purpose or it wouldn’t have been expanded…. When it has veered extensively from it’s usefulness, it might be time to discuss building a business there (but please specify, what business?).

Now’s a good time to point out there are lots of things about Sinclair and costs and money that me want to go Hmmmmmmm. As for their current attempt to bleed more money from county taxpayers, I’m voting NO. I’m voting Yes on local school levies. Sinclair can get money from tuition, the State, and benefactors. Let students pay a little more tuition. Maybe we don’t need all those nice shiny buildings downtown. Maybe other businesses could build on that property and they would pay real tax money into the city and county. Maybe the way Sinclair has operated can be looked into by Education reporters from the viewpoint of “Should everyone subsidize all these colleges and community schools in our area?” Clark tech, Edison, Wright State, Central State, Miami University Middletown, Wilberforce, UD, and branches of Capital? out of Columbus.

What about the disruption to the campus? When Chelsea spoke on campus, security wouldn’t allow some students to access their lockers to get books for class. Security would have been at least as tight for Senator McCain. The main reason for the campus is to educate students, not political fundraising for EITHER party. The administration should keep in mind why they have jobs, and focus on the students. For a change.

I agree it was a missed opportunity for students. On the other hand, they operate the conference center as a quasi-independent facility, and they can’t be effective in that work if they have to analyze every potential event. Also, they may have political or legal reasons not to formally participate in such an event, especially when they are trying to build support for the levy.
