Smith not charged; 12 others are
My colleague Katherine Ullmer reports that Centerville police filed charges against 12 people including seven juveniles in connection with the party at former school board member Cheryl Smith’s house.
But the big news is Smith was not among those charged.
Police say there is no indication that she supplied the alcohol for the party. Those headed to court face charges including underage drinking, possession of marijuana and keg law violations.

So now it’s illegal for the Smith’s to have people in their house? You have NO idea what was happening in the house on Friday nor do you know that these guests were teens. It’s pathetic that you nosy neighbors have nothing better to do than harrass this family.By Sorry Jack

She was not with her husband on Valentine’s Day. Her son got out of the car when she finally arrived home that night. I got to witness the whole event from my house. Also, it is Friday night and a blizzard is going on outside and guess what? It has been only a month and here we go again! Another teenage party! It is happening as I am typing! This time the kids are jammed packed in cars and have parked in her driveway instead of the street! Katherine Ulmer, you better start investigating! All of the neighbors had bets going on to when the every Friday/Saturday night partying would begin again. We didn’t think it would be this soon!By Jack

All I can say is Cheryl Smith must know someone within the judicial system. She should be charged with contributing. Her house, her children, her responsibilty. On another note, where was she until 3:00 a.m. on a week-night? I can’t help but wonder if she knew there was going to be a “little get together” that evening and left the house knowing what was going to be going on? Also, where did these children get the alcohol? Had not the police been called to her house on other occasions for loud parties going on at her house? This just proves the law is not made for everyone, just the folks that do not know the right people. I totally agree with the writer “THE LAW” parents need to be accountable for what the under age children do in thier homes.By The Law

I don’t understand why it is only $100 fine for being caught with Pot, but it is $1000 for underage drinking? What is the punishment with the Ohio Keg law for a minor? Shouldn’t the mother be charged with the Keg law too? I have heard that the home owner does not have to be home to be charged with the Ohio Keg law. Wouldn’t it be a great lesson to all parents everywhere for Ms. Smith to be charged. Then all parents would think twice about leaving their teens alone. It could put an end to underage drinking parties. This is the perfect time to make an example out of her and this situation since this is front page news!By Mary

Students should be held acountable. However, I have to believe adults running schools and colleges help set the tone of what is cool, with the partying and binge drinking among school established social cliques by age, class, and extracurricular groups. The reason I bring this up - there was also recently an article in the papers with a statement from the school board apparently placing this all on parents and “no flies on us”. I consider a major portion of the problem a result of “socialization” in the school environment. Schools are a source of cultural dumbing down and irresponsibility. “Socialization” with age peers is stressed more than learning academics and social responsibility.
