Stakes are high for Jefferson school levy
In my column this weekend I wrote about the unspoken subtext of the school levy in Jefferson Twp. If voters there shoot down this levy, it will greatly increase the possibility that the school district, which already is under state oversight for financial trouble, could cease to exist in a few years time.
Voters in Jefferson have been very consistent in voting against increases in school taxes over the past 10 years. I can’t say I blame them. The district has been badly managed and performed poorly academically in the past decade.
But rebelling against higher taxes for a troubled enterprise and casting a vote that may lead to shutting down your school district are two different things. Will the levy pass or fail? If you have a feel for what will happen in Jefferson Twp., let us know.
