Fordham: Education markets don’t always work
A new book out written by a trio from the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation about the group’s experience with market-based school reform in Dayton includes some surprising takeaways from a group that has been a national force supporting charter schools and vouchers.

There were some surprises in the book indeed. The book claims that the DEA recruited Dayton board candidates for the 2007 election. I don’t know who they recruited but I’m pretty sure that they endorsed three incumbents that year. The book gives far too much credit to Gail Littlejohn for the building levy (she had to be sold on the process), increasing classroom spending (it decreased as a percentage of total spending under Kids First years according to ODE and Admin expenses shot up from 12% to 16% of total spending) and performance increases (our index scores for the kids first period pretty much went up and down with the same percentage increases and decreases as the state as a whole)
