UD welcomes record class at move-in day

DAYTON - University freshmen Jen Sims and Maura Loftos, both of different Chicago suburbs, have already something many first-year college students long for on move-in day.

The new roommates are already friends because their mothers, Mary Lynn Sims and Julie Loftos, attended the University of Illinois together where they studied nursing. Growing up the mothers were much closer friends than the daughters, but once both decided to attend the University of Dayton Jen and Maura decided to room together in the Marycrest Complex. “It really worked out,” said Julie. “We are very happy Maura has Jen. It’s a nice match.”

Jen and Maura were just two of more than 2,000 freshmen, a 40-year record-sized class, who moved into the four freshmen residence halls Saturday. Dark clouds and scattered rain showers didn’t dampen the spirits of students from across the state and the country excited to begin school. Volunteers called the “Blue Crew” waited for students’ families to pull up and then loaded boxes, carpets and suitcases into giant blue laundry bins to be hauled inside dorms.

Brittany Martin, of Indianapolis, and Erin Rucinski, of Strongsville, Ohio, struggled with their parents to find the perfect layout for their dorm room. A new carpet was already laid down and the group worked to find the best way to fit, beds, desks and bureaus. Both girls had mixed emotions of excitement and nervousness for their first time away from home. They both said they were drawn to UD’s strong sense of community.

That community is diversifying as the university tries to transition from drawing students regionally to drawing more nationally. University officials hope to soon draw half their students from out of state.
