Miami-Jacobs nursing students claim they were booted over 1 test
DAYTON - More than half the last class of practical nursing students at Miami-Jacobs Career College claim they were kicked out of the program Monday after missing a dozen questions on an exam last week.
The students said they believe problems the school is having with the Ohio Board of Nursing, which has moved twice this year to pull the program’s conditional approval, has led the school to find ways to dismiss students from the program. To take state licensing exams, nursing students must graduate from an approved program.
“I think that is exactly what it is,” said Brandy Booth, a student from Xenia, who believes the college is trying to purposely shrink the class of nursing students. “I think they are in trouble and are trying to find a way to get rid of us.”
About 10 students out of a class of 18 were told Monday they were out of the program after missing roughly a dozen questions about nutrition on an exam the students’ claim instructors told them not to worry about preparing for that part of the test. They said they were told they couldn’t retake the exam, an opportunity past students had received, because the school was no longer enrolling nursing students.
Darlene Waite, school president, said in a statement that the students had two chances to take the test, did not take advantage of tutoring and other support and fell below a 2.0 grade-point average. When they make “unsatisfactory progress,” she said, they are subject to dismissal. “If students fail despite all the help we provide, we cannot and will not bend the rules and ignore Ohio Board of Nursing guidelines to help them pass. Despite claims this situation has nothing to do with accreditation,” Waite said.
Students were adamant the move was sudden and unexpected. “We failed one test and we were kicked out completely,” said Melodi Moore, a student from Xenia. “Now we are just screwed because they didn’t accept other students. We want our money back, but yeah right.”
Miami-Jacobs voluntarily stopped accepting new nursing students after the Ohio Nursing Board claimed the school lied about the qualifications of a nutrition instructor, had an unqualified person leading the program and wasn’t meeting other state standards. College officials have requested a hearing to defend their actions that is set for September.
Waite has said the school will continue to work to fix problems and win full accreditation of the nursing program. She denies the college ever provided the board with false information and said the school was improving the curriculum to meet state standards.

I’m a student at MJCC. We all know what we have to do to pass. They give us many opportunities to be able to pass the test in question. MJCC is trying to raise it’s standards by holding students accountable for what they learned- since when is this substandard?

Duh, it sounds like it is not okay for someone to care for you if they do not take a test, but it is okay for them as long as they can pass a sub-standard PROGRAM, so bad that the Ohio Nursing Board wants to cancel, in spite of nursing shortages. This SCHOOL must be held accountable! Quit blaming it on the students, who are given arbitary info from the latest teacher passing through.

why didn’t these students leave when they first heard that they are wasting their time and money and can’t do anything with the “so called” education they are recieving?

What percentage of MJCC students are “bottom of the barrel” students - recruited by the college solely for federal and state grant money? Usually when the students are “bottom of the barrel” the instructors are a close second. MJCC teaches: “Nail Technology,” “Skin Care,” and “Legal Office Assistant.” I mean, how much college education does one need to file and paint fingernails?? Maybe they could add “Janitorial Custodial Hallway Refinishing Engineering” and “Deep Frying Potato Manufacturing Sciences” to their curriculum too? LOL

It’s unfortunate that these nursing students made a poor choice in schools. Live and learn and move on. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of Darlene’s reign.

Education is what you, the student, make it. My daughter, a nurse, had a phd for a class that was one of the worst teachers that she ever had. Usually, if the student has a book, they can study and get the knowledge. Just a thought.

It is amazing to me that MJ is still operating. Who is registering for classes there after all the publicity regarding their programs? If you’re a student at MJ, you should be prepared to owe lots of money and be unemployed!

Tests are designed to separate the smart from the not so smart. It seems to work and is fair. Get used to it. It has been used in teaching for centuries.

Before a rush to judgement with everyone saying that these students are lazy, remember that these students paid over $22,000 to attend this school. Maybe or two might be lazy, but the rest just got a sub-standard program where the teaching methods are questionable. Does the school think throwing students who have put their life savings and futures at risk to pay for this program going to save it? I think not! Changing the rules in the middle of the game is unfair. The policies and procedures at the school are not properly disclosed. That leads to arbitrary dismissals that are criminal for these young students. Again, shame on you, Darlene Waite!

I guess only comments against M-J are allowed.

Not saying M-J is blameless but since all this started some, not all, of their students feel they now have the school over a barrel. Some really wish to be Nurses, some are looking for a free ride. Becoming a Nurse is hard work…you wouldn’t want it any other way.

Here we go, “I failed to study enough and flunked out, I’m a victim.”

Let’s see, we have a school whose accreditation is being questioned and could be potentially sued by their students, now all of a sudden requiring those same students to reach higher standards or they are summarily discharged. This inoculates them from the “potential” lawsuits but that “is certainly not their motive”! Ummmmmmm does anybody else smell something fishy here?

I’m actually on Miami Jacobs side on this one. They shouldn’t pass people with bad grades.

You know I am slow to object and get upset but the more I read about these people the more I think they are a criminal organizable. They need to shut the whole thing down, which I never thought at all before. I was more let them go in and fix it.

This happens all the time in the medical field. If you don’t study and pass your tests..you’re gone. I don’t want anyone taking care of me who can’t pass their tests.
By the way it is

unfortunately that happens at a lot of nursing schools you can be booted anytime. When I graduated we had 1/3rd of the people we started with.

M-Jacobs is pretty much a joke. If you want a career in the nursing field, go find a real school of nursing program. MJ is a low level tech training school at best.
