Nursing board puts Sinclair program on probation
COLUMBUS - The Ohio Board of Nursing put Sinclair Community College’s program on 18-month probation after a site inspection found the school employed an unlicensed instructor and had other record keeping problems.
The board decided last week to put the program on provisional approval and require the college submit quarterly progress reports, said Lisa Emrich, education program manager for the board. The college has more than 3,000 nursing students.
During a September site visit board officials found Sinclair employed Mary Beth Lodge to teach 17 one-day, seminar courses over the past five years after letting her nursing license lapse. The school also could not show documentation it verified the licenses of 44 instructors in 2009.
Helen Grove, Sinclair’s chief academic officer, told nursing board members the school treats “these issues with the utmost concern,” according to a statement provided by the college. “(W)e have made significant changes in key processes to address concerns reflected in the report.”
After the board issued its findings late last year Steven Johnson, college president, said they rechecked every instructors’ credentials and overhauled record keeping oversight.
Sinclair’s nursing program had full approval of the state so the worst the board could do was place the program on probation by changing its status from full approval to provisional approval, Emrich said.
