Federal budget proposal includes big gains in education spending

A commitment to education funding was one of the bright spots in a 2012 federal budget released Monday by President Barack Obama that could have real implications for students in the Miami Valley.

The $77.4 billion is a 20 percent increase from 2010 spending levels and includes committing $1.4 billion for the continuation of the popular Race to the Top program that awarded $400 million to Ohio last year. The new competitions will focus on early childhood education, local teaching reforms and improving college access and completion.

It also holds steady the maximum Pell Grant award at $5,550, which provides financial help to 9 million students nationwide. To do so, the newly implemented year-round grant for summer classes will be cut as will a subsidy for graduate student loan interest.

“All of it is going to be a big deal,” said Jennifer Penick, Wright State University director of financial aid, who added that 7,700 students are expected to receive $30 million in Pell Grants this school year. “They are hugely important here and at many other institutions.”

We got all kinds of money, Obamamoney, to increase education spending by 20%. We’re broke, and Obama doesn’t care. How has having the Department of Education helped? I don’t see it. Time for public employees to stop making more and having better benefits than those whom they are supposed to be serving: the tax payers who pay their salaries. Time to stop wasting money on going green where you lose 3 jobs for every 1 that is created. Time to stop playing with our energy and finding ways to increase taxes. It’s time to cut spending on non essential programs, like 20% increase in education. Time for us to get serious. Apparently, Obama is still using that credit card like it has no limit.

Scooby, why haven’t you questioned Obama where the jobs are? Obama has been promising jobs for 2 1/2 yrs, Boehner has been speaker for 1 month. Are you really this blindly obtuse?

Scooby, why don’t you ask Obama where the jobs are? He’s been touting policies that promised job creation for the past 2+ years, but those jobs have yet to materialize (except in government Census and IRS for example). Its very disengenious of you ask that of Boehner and not Obama. The American workers that VOTED for his lies are waiting for him to do something about his promises.

Scooby, why don’t you ask Obama where the jobs are? He’s been promising for over 2 years, but have delivered very little, except for govt jobs, such as census takers, IRS agents, and more lines of BS. The American workers that voted for his lies are waiting for him to come thru on his promises. Are you being intentionally disengenious?

Commitment to a “LIBERAL” education, that is. And we wonder why this country has fallen so far behind! We need more business leaders, CEO’s and managers from private industry teaching our kids, especially in high school and college. We need more diversification of those teaching our kids.

Obama wishes to increase spending on education, Pell grants, cities, infra-structure, health care, all the things to make your life better. Conservatives on the other hand in their budget proposal want to completely cut PBS, EPA,FDA, most of education, and only increase military spending and add an additional bullions to nuclear arms development, they are so important in the world since 9-11. There is your difference between the parties. What happened to the conservative all about jobs before the election? Have done NOTHING or heard NOTHING about jobs since. Speaker John of Orange Boehner, where are the jobs? American workers that VOTED for your lies are waiting for you to do something about your promises.

Only a fool would increase spending on any program by 20% when the country is broke. Is there anyone who thinks education has gotten better over the last 50 years? If you believe education has gotten better than you are either in the field of education or you need to become better educated.
