Should states have more oversight of online schools?

Today Oxford Press editor Meagan Engle and I reported how U.S. Department of Education efforts to increase state oversight of online education have been struck down by a federal court.

The proposed rule was part of a set of regulations that included new oversight of the quickly growing for-profit education industry.

The “state authorization” rule would have required schools to receive authorization in every state it taught students online. It was opposed by nearly every education sector and the for-profit industry sued to block the rule and other regulations regarding recruiting practices. A federal judge agreed the “state authorization” rule went too far, but upheld other regulations.

What do you think? Should online education be monitored more closely?

No way. The State DOE is an abysmal failure. Private schools, home schools, even online schools all perform to much higher standards on a fraction of the budget. Please keep the state as far away from something that’s working as possible.

They need to have a Board of Regents just like all other 2/4yr colleges.

I think we should gut the Department of Education. That’s what I think. Since their creation, students scores have gone down and education has dwindled. We now have people “graduating” who can’t read or write proper English. And the socialism taught in our schools, along with hatred of God and religion, has taken over. Unions have ruined our ability to control and remove teachers who aren’t performing. Time to gut Department of Education and start over. Maybe the states should take control. But definitely we don’t need any more Federal regulations. We need to undo what the Feds have done to this nation.
