Jilted Beavercreek school board to talk about superintendent’s job
BEAVERCREEK — School board members will convene 6 p.m. tonight, Thursday, July 9, in private session to discuss the next step in their search to hire a new superintendent.
Dennis Morrison is leaving the district at the end of the month to take a smaller-profile assistant principal job in nearby Fairborn, where he can work more closely with students.
After a months-long search to replace Morrison and salary negotiations, board members voted July 2 to hire Mark North, currently superintendent in Lebanon, as the district’s next administrator.
North signed a $139,000 contract July 2, but then changed his mind about taking the job and submitted his resignation to Beavercreek board members July 7. School officials tonight will likely vote to cancel North’s contract before retiring to private session to discuss their next step, said Peg Arnold, board member.
Morrison leaves the district at the end of the month, and school begins in just six weeks. The district also is in the first stages of an $84-million building and renovation project to help ease overcrowding in the rapidly growing district.
North cited personal reasons for his sudden change of heart, saying Tuesday he felt his family belonged in Lebanon. Just days before, he said coming to Beavercreek was the culmination of a career’s worth of work and he was excited to take on the challenge.
Lebanon school board members said they did not offer North anything to stay in the district, but they were happy he decided to remain there. North also was a finalist for a superintendent spot in the Oak Hills district near Cincinnati, but was not picked for the job.
Beavercreek picked North from a pool of 11 candidates, several of which were interviewed by teachers, parents and support staff during the three month search. Larry Hook, a Springboro schools assistant superintendent, was also a finalist for the job.

wow! the school board can’t pick a candidate that is committed or even know that he is willing to move. That’s gotta leave a mark. When you have legacy builders as school leaders, this is what happens. I hope these same fools didn’t negotiate the building of new schools?? or did they?? legacy builders, all of them (also pig farmers)

Hey board, why don’t you ask Mike Rarick to be an interim super. You have a great option sitting right in front of your collective face.
By where did he go

I have heard and read comments that Mike Verlingo no longer is a resident of Beavercreek. Where is he now living and when did he move from the city? If this is true, he needs to be off the board ASAP and not allowed to participate in the selection process.

In an earlier story about the resignation, Peg Arnold was quoted “I don’t know what we will do”. Here’s a suggestion, RESIGN. Leaders should have contingency plans. She has been on the board way too long.

I agree with Board Must Go’s comment…RESIGN PEG ARNOLD…you think you are the boss…YOU ARE NOT

Scooby, how do you propose that a school board, or any employer, should or could get any more firm commitment from a potential employee? I’m really interested in knowing. This apparently purely personal and spontaneous decision by Mr. North seems to say more about him and his family (good OR bad) than it does about the school board. And “Board Must Go”, do you HONESTLY think even 1% of employers would have a contingency in place for a new hire who SIGNED A CONTRACT, but who then backed out with no warning? Truly an incredible criticism.

Let’s not rush into things, why is it that decision makers go out of their way to look in other places when perhaps the deputy is the most qualified. No one will be able to fill the same shoes of Denny Morrison but Mike Rarick has a good handle on Beavercreek. Smarten up Board and quit thinking that the grass is greener over someone elses fence.

I hope the Board decides not to waste anymore of MY MONEY! Leave the position vacant, it will work itself out.

Rich, I know this may be difficult for you to understand so I will type slowly.. How about a decent background check first of all to see how is work history and overall job performance is? maybe this would be a alert if you knew how many projects he ahd started or involved in. Next, plain and simple interviewing skills would have alleviated this. But the board is such a big hurry, they had to change panties once he signed.. don’t try and help cover incompetent board members. it makes you look silly

Why not ask Mr. Morrison to return. You all appear to have a great relationship.

I know there are other members of the community planning on running for the BOE since they let Denny Morrison get away. If they want to win they should probably consider asking him to return…Who knows he may agree.

Mr. Verlingo is living in Cols with his “partner”. I understand he has rented out his condo or at least is trying to.

Ruh Roh Scooby. Trying to read the post you “typed slowly” makes YOU look silly! Are you contending that the board did not interview their potentials? And WTF do you mean “the board is such a big hurry they had to change panties” How do you expect anybody to take you seriously? And what personal interest do you have in the B/C schools? Go troll somewhere else, please.
