<title>Mother&apos;s Day is right around the corner</title>

Mother&amp;#8217;s Day is a little over a week away (Sunday, May 11) and since she raised you and probably brought you into the world, it&amp;#8217;s a day to celebrate her. But how many knick-knacks can she possibly have (or cram onto a shelf)? Why not do something helpful and heartfelt? If you&amp;#8217;ve got little ones (and dad&amp;#8217;s and big siblings I&amp;#8217;m talking to you here!) they will enjoy (and mom will treasure) making something for mom instead of buying her the standard trinkets, chocolates, flowers, etc. (though, those are nice too!)

A few ideas from personal experience and from others are below. What&amp;#8217;s your favorite personalized gift idea for mom?

Without further ado&amp;#8230; the ideas&amp;#8230;

1.) As a child, my Girl Scout troop spent an entire meeting pressing our hands into pie pans filled with acrylic paint in bright colors and then placing our painted handprints into plain color carpet bath rugs (or inside door mat size). They dried and by the next day (and for us the next meeting) they were ready to go home and wrap. Fairly cheap to make and priceless for mom. My mom still has hers in our house with my 5-year-old handprints pressed in for a lifetime.

2.) From Marisa comes this idea: &amp;#8220;It used to be the tradition in my family, when my mom still gardened, that my dad would take her to the nursery and she could pick out a new shrub/tree etc.&amp;#8221; That type of idea can be used in many ways. If mom gardens, the above works just fine. If not, find something she&amp;#8217;s interested in and let her pick out an related item or accessory. She&amp;#8217;ll be happy and you won&amp;#8217;t have to worry about what to get her as much.

3.) From Katie comes a great idea for dad&amp;#8217;s (or children old enough to do it): &amp;#8220;My dad one year washed every piece of laundry in the house ( a lot of loads) so my mom was all caught up, which lets face it never happens.&amp;#8221; What mom wouldn&amp;#8217;t love to come home to find her most daunting bit of housework already done for her? Whether it&amp;#8217;s laundry, dishes, washing windows, whatever, it&amp;#8217;s sure to be appreciated. Just make sure that whatever you do is done to her standards so she doesn&amp;#8217;t secretly go back and re-do it all when you aren&amp;#8217;t looking.

4.) It&amp;#8217;s a fact. If it comes from your heart, there&amp;#8217;s a really good chance that mom&amp;#8217;s going to love it. If you&amp;#8217;re broke, or really young, make her something. Whether it&amp;#8217;s a card, a cheesy coupon book (for things like &amp;#8220;1 night of doing the dishes&amp;#8221;, &amp;#8220;Cleaning my room without complaining&amp;#8221;, &amp;#8220;Hugs!&amp;#8221;) a work of art, whatever. It will be a cherished memory for mom.

And if all else fails, spend some quality time with her. Help her cook dinner some night. Work in the garden with her. Go shopping together. You don&amp;#8217;t have to spend a fortune to make mom happy.

What are you planning to do or have you done in the past for Mother&amp;#8217;s Day?

Next time: Gift ideas for those shopping from afar&amp;#8230; or with limited time.

Even though Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day is officially Thursday, with it falling on a weekday, people can celebrate all weekend long. If you&amp;#8217;re headed out Thursday for your Valentine date you&amp;#8217;re probably a little too late to get a reservation, but you can always try something unconventional. Order a pizza, cook dinner for two, or try a restaurant that&amp;#8217;s off the beaten path. As long as you&amp;#8217;re both happy, it doesn&amp;#8217;t even have to be someplace fancy.

If you&amp;#8217;re together, even McDonald&amp;#8217;s or White Castle can be romantic!

If you&amp;#8217;re headed out this weekend you may still have a shot at great reservations. Check out our expert&amp;#8217;s picks for romantic dining in the area.

If you&amp;#8217;re ordering flowers for your Valentine to be delivered tomorrow and you haven&amp;#8217;t done so yet, you better order them on your lunch break today (that&amp;#8217;s code for right now!). Most area florists require you to order them by this afternoon (Most by around 2 p.m.) to guarantee delivery the next day. Be careful, many of them may already be overbooked for tomorrow.

So, if you&amp;#8217;re still hunting the best deal or you need a florist to use, check out this handy guide to area flower shops and what their prices and delivery options are.

That&amp;#8217;s a little bit disgusting. Though I&amp;#8217;m sure some roses would look lovely in it&amp;#8230; not.

I guess if you&amp;#8217;re both doctors (especially cardiologists) it could be a good gift?

Anyway, click for a picture and link to buy the vase (you know, if you are a cardiologist)

See the &amp;#8220;heart&amp;#8221; vase

I&amp;#8217;ll post about real gift and celebration ideas later on.

1 day left!

Nothing says romance like a cookie-cutter gift right? Wrong. So instead of just getting the basic necklace or a watch, why not personalize something?

While many Web sites offer personalized products, there is often a wait to receive them. However, today (Monday) is the last day to order things from Things Remembered&amp;#8217;s site and have them delivered by Thursday.

But if that&amp;#8217;s what you&amp;#8217;re looking for, you can buy most of their items (except for embroidered items) in the store and have them personalized in a few hours time for your sweetie. (Find a store)

Here&amp;#8217;s a few ideas for her: Make her eyes (and her neck!) sparkle with a personalized 2-piece heart necklace or capture your favorite moment together in a Pink &amp;#8220;I Love You&amp;#8221; picture frame.

And a few for him: A personalized pocket watch is a classy and classic choice for the man in your life. Eliminate the variety of items in his pocket with a versatile mutli tool. It&amp;#8217;s a money clip, a knife, a bottle opener, scissors a file and more, and it&amp;#8217;s all his.

<title>Finding the perfect gift</title>

I personally know of a few people who take gift giving in their relationship to extreme levels of spending for the holidays, birthdays, etc.

And it&amp;#8217;s true, you can spend an entire week&amp;#8217;s pay (or more) on someone you love buying them the &amp;#8220;perfect&amp;#8221; gift for Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day. And it might even make them happy or bring a genuine smile to their face.

Or you could opt for a simple approach: Time together. All too often in today&amp;#8217;s society time with your significant other is cut short by work, school, children, other family obligations and more. There are couples who rarely see each other even though they are very much in love.

So instead of depleting your bank accounts, give the gift of yourselves for Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day. Make a plan to spend the day together. Whether you go out for a &amp;#8220;date&amp;#8221; and see a movie or have a meal, head for Cox Arboretum if the weather permits or just stay in and play board games or watch movies it doesn&amp;#8217;t matter as long as your doing something together and enjoying each others&amp;#8217; company.

I&amp;#8217;ll stop preaching now. Next up will be some sensible (but still nice!) gifts you can buy for your Valentine.

If you&amp;#8217;d rather avoid crowded restaurants or would just rather save your hard-earned money on a more filling meal than most reservation-requiring restaurants serve this Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day, why not call up your local Cassano&amp;#8217;s Pizza (294-KING will get you to the appropriate location) and order a heart-shaped pie for 2.

At just $12.99 for a large 1-topping pizza (and $1.30 for extra toppings) it&amp;#8217;s a reasonably priced answer to Cupid&amp;#8217;s favorite day of the year.

Or you could whip up your own dinner for two if you&amp;#8217;re feeling adventurous enough.

The Food Network offers up a few recipes for the ultimate romantic evening.

And if you&amp;#8217;d like to turn up the heat in the kitchen you could try Chili&amp;#8217;s style fajitas for two.

Another classic romantic meal that is definitely simple to make is spaghetti. It&amp;#8217;s a dish that is as varied as you want it to be: With meat or without, with veggies or without, whole grain or enriched pasta and the list goes on and on.

But if you&amp;#8217;ve ever seen &amp;#8220;Lady and the Tramp,&amp;#8221; you know just how romantic a plate of spaghetti can be.

Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day is approaching faster than you think. Many stores already have their Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day displays out with candy, cards, candles and more.

The holiday cards were barely off the shelves before the Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day cards were in their place at the Kroger in Fairborn. Target had some Valentine items in their &amp;#8220;Dollar Spot&amp;#8221; near the front entrance of the store before New Year&amp;#8217;s was even over.

Even if the season does seem to be starting earlier than ever this year, it only means one thing. The merchandise will be gone before you know it and maybe before you even think to look for it. So if you&amp;#8217;re hunting for the perfect decorations, valentines or candies, you may want to look a little early so you don&amp;#8217;t miss out on the things you want.

More later on some interesting new V-Day items, setting the scene for a romantic evening, partying in a red and pink, heart-filled world and more.

Looking for something for your kids to do tonight?

You can always keep them home and celebrate with some non-alcoholic sparkling cider or grape juice (available at most grocery stores this time of year), microwave popcorn and a good movie! Let them invite over a friend or two to stay the night (if you&amp;#8217;ll be home and you&amp;#8217;re up to the challenge).

Silly party hats and tiaras make for a fun atmosphere and I haven&amp;#8217;t met a kid yet that didn&amp;#8217;t enjoy making noise, so be sure to pick up a package of noisemakers so they can celebrate when the ball drops.

I&amp;#8217;d advise frozen pizzas instead of trying to order one to be delivered if pizza is your plan for dinner. Delivery times will undoubtedly be slow tonight with the sheer volume of parties.

Or you can head down to RiverScape if you&amp;#8217;re in the Dayton area. They are hosting a no-alcohol, family friendly party complete with Ice Skating and fireworks over the river at midnight. The cost to get in is just $5 and includes skate rentals.

If you want to leave the kids at home while you go out to celebrate, be prepared to pay a little extra to your babysitter (if you can find one). Often, babysitters will charge double or triple their normal rate on a night like New Year&amp;#8217;s Eve.

New Year&amp;#8217;s Eve is fast approaching. Do you have plans? A party to attend? Champagne to buy?

If you&amp;#8217;re throwing a party or even attending one, you can get into the spirit buy purchasing party hats, headbands, lei-like necklaces and even special 2008 champagne flutes.

And you can&amp;#8217;t forget the party poppers, sparklers and noisemakers! I attended a party a few years ago where their tradition was to go outside at midnight and give everyone a can of silly string! What a beautiful mess! But it was a fun way to ring in the new year!

As for where to purchase your supplies, most stores have some type of display out already, ushering Christmas right on out. At Meijer they had a variety of choices for all of the above including plastic champagne glasses for the toast at midnight. The Beavercreek store on Col. Glenn Highway had their display right in the front near the newspaper stands.

While you don&amp;#8217;t have much time left to order online, you also can find a variety of New Year&amp;#8217;s party supplies through the Oriental Trading Company at decent prices.

And I can&amp;#8217;t forget to give you a well-known, yet oft-forgot secret: The Dollar Tree. Even they have party supplies and plastic stemware. And the best part is that it&amp;#8217;s only $1. But a word of caution: $1 here and a $1 there adds up and you may be tempted to buy more than you need and even things you don&amp;#8217;t need because you feel like you&amp;#8217;re saving money! So when shopping for your party (and this applies to any party planning), make sure you make a list of what you need to avoid overspending!

Tomorrow: Fun ways for your kids to celebrate the New Year!

Only a few days remaim until Christmas and while I&amp;#8217;m not quite done, I&amp;#8217;m feeling that pressure of the big day creeping up on me. So much to bake, so much more to wrap and still a couple items to pick up!

How do you deal with holiday stress?

How about you? Are you done with your holiday shopping yet? Do you think you&amp;#8217;ll be ready in time?
