So when do you and your family open gifts?

Black Friday is just over a week away. But are you really ready? With the prevalence of various ad-leaking Black Friday web sites out there, it’s easier than ever to get a head start on your planning and strategizing.

As in year’s past I have my annual list of survival tips for you to check out. What do you do to survive black Friday? Do you go in groups? Stay at home? Share your tips below.

Survival tips for brave Black Friday shoppers everywhere…

Pay attention to the ads: No one likes to get to a store and realize that the sale on that DVD only applies to the full screen version and you want wide-screen (or whatever other nightmare realization you might have)

Wear clothes appropriate to the weather (both in and out): If it’s cold out, have a coat/jacket/sweater handy for waiting in lines before stores open, but be prepared to tie it around your waist or put it in a cart, if you’re lucky enough to find one. The less you have on, the better. Stores get very warm with thousands of people running around for the best deals. »Check the forecast for Black Friday

Make a list! I cannot emphasize this one enough. Without it, you’ll surely forget at least one item you came for. If you’re super-organized, it helps to put the item, the store where it’s on sale and how much it’s supposed to be on sale for. Also handy, carry a highlighter to mark things off as you get them. (Print a handy, pre-organized list here!)

Clean out your trunk (or cargo area): Better to have PLENTY of room for unexpectedly large items, or all of your shopping bags. Plus, if it’s in the trunk, it’s out of sight and theives are less likely to break in to steal your holiday gifts.

Bring a reusable shopping bag or two: When there are no carts or baskets available you’ll be glad you have a handy bag to tote stuff to the registers in. Staff photographer Teesha McClam uses one that zips up to be pretty small until she needs it.

Bring your ads with you: If you’ve got it, the store can’t dispute the price and you can check again on things you saw through the turkey haze the night before.

Keep drinks and snacks in your car: You may have to wait in yet another line to get a beverage or a bite to eat in the stores and this way you stay hydrated, fed and safe. So pack up a small cooler with some drinks and snacks (sandwich size bags of crackers, chips and other snacks work well as do the various 100-calorie items).

Pack light: If you’re carrying a purse, clean it out the night before so you have only the essentials (checkbook, credit cards, ID, store savings/rewards cards, cell phone, gum and a hairband if needed). If you really want to be safe, make sure it’s a purse that’s easy to carry, preferably across your body. It’ll make it that much more difficult for someone to snatch it from you. If you’re only carrying a wallet, clean it out too. If it’s too thick, it’s hard on your back.

Wear comfortable shoes and clothes: Tensions will be running high, everyone will be tired and the last thing you need is for your feet to be aching while you wait in line. Same goes for your clothes. If you aren’t comfortable, change! No one cares if you’re making a fashion statement or not. It’s Black Friday.

Put gas in your car the night before: Time is of the essence here. You won’t have time to stop and fill up between getting to and from each store you need to hit. Although, if you aren’t out shopping, lines at the pump shouldn’t be too bad…

Have fun and be kind to fellow shoppers! This one may just be the most important! If you aren’t having a good time, you’re only going to make others miserable too. If you’re nice to others, it will likely come back to you. If you’re not, chances are, that’ll come back too, only you probably won’t like it.

This ready-to-print list (example at left) will make your Black Friday easier in just 3 steps. It has a column for the store, item, price and details for each item on your Black Friday wish list. This will make sure you know where you’re going and what you’re after in each store.

There are way more than 12 days ‘til Christmas but starting at noon Thursday you can spend the next 37 or so days singing “Jingle Bells” at the top of your lungs when 99.9 Lite FM switches over to Christmas music 24/7 through the end of the year.

The date for the big switch has varied over the last several years and this year they gave listeners a chance to vote on their web site. They’ve already started playing holiday tunes on the weekends. If you aren’t in their listening area you can listen live on their Web site.

If you think you’re a Christmas music expert, test your Christmas song lyric knowledge with our lyrics quiz.

Do you like the 24/7 Christmas music? Do you think it’s too early or too late?

Happy Halloween weekend!

Since I’m off this week to celebrate Halloween (my favorite time of year), this post will be brief but I wanted to let you know about a few Halloween food deals that are happening this weekend.

Abuelo’s Mexican Food: Kids 12 and under in costume eat free on Oct. 31. Limit 2 free kids meals per adult entree purchased.

TGI Friday’s: Free fried mozzarella, pot stickers or crispy green bean fries appetizer for anyone in costume on Oct. 30. They’ll also have a costume contest at 9 p.m. And on Sunday, Oct. 31 kids in costume eat free with a paid adult.

KFC: KFC’s Delicious Double contest asks you to dress as Col. Sanders for Halloween and then send them your photo for a chance to win free KFC Doublicious sandwiches for life. You can print this mask to get you started if you need help.

Frisch’s Big Boy: Once again Frisch’s will offer their Halloween kid’s meal cards (8 cards in a pack for $1). The cards are redeemable Nov. 1 - Dec. 14 (perfect for nights when you’ve been out holiday shopping and don’t want to cook).

Chipotle: As I wrote about earlier in the month, Chipotle and chef Jamie Oliver have teamed up asking customers to dress as processed food on Halloween (Oct. 31) and get a burrito, bowl, salad or tacos for $2.

Do you know of other Halloween food deals or specials? Share them below!

Happy haunting!

Halloween is 12 days and some change away. Have you figured out this year’s costume yet?

One of this year’s hot costumes is Lady Gaga. And really, one doesn’t need to buy much of anything to make that work since Gaga’s been known to wear a dress made of meat and more sparkly body-suits than a whole team of gymnasts. My advice for that one is to wear anything outrageous (we’re talking bubbles, paper, shredded material, anything goes), throw on some cool shades (the more quirky the better), a blonde (or purple or green or any wild color) wig in any length, makeup and some shoes (the higher and more unique the better).

If you’re short on time, creativity or excess materials there are multiple pre-made costumes available.

Other popular costumes this year include: Anyone from The Jersey Shore, Avatar and Alice in Wonderland according to a survey conducted by BIGresearch for the National Retail Federation.

I’m going as Sookie Stackhouse from ‘True Blood’ this year. What will you be?

For me I’m not a fan of the peanut butter Mary Jane candy (always wrapped in black and orange wax paper).

Take a look at our poll and vote for your least favorite Halloween candy. If yours isn’t listed, tell us in the comments which candy you despise the most.

Note: We didn’t include other horrors such as pencils, pennies, apples or other non-candy tricks in our poll. We figured those were far too horrifying.

This Halloween instead of donning aluminum foil to get a free burrito from your local Chipotle, Chipotle founder Steve Ells and chef Jamie Oliver want you to “dress to kill” and show up dressed as processed food.

All you have to do is costume yourself as a chicken nugget, a hotdog, sauce packet, or other processed food and head for your local Chipotle after 6 p.m. on Halloween (Oct. 31) and get a burrito, bowl, salad, or tacos for $2.

Up to $1,000,000 of the proceeds will go to Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. If you didn’t see Jamie’s show earlier in the year, he’s aiming to get people to eat healthier (read: less processed, bad-for-you food) — especially in schools, but all over America.

Once you’re dressed up you’ll want to take a picture of yourself at Chipotle (they have to see that it’s really a Chipotle you are standing in to qualify) and enter it in the Boorito photo contest. To do so, submit it at chipotle.com/boorito from Oct. 31-Nov. 8. Winners will be posted online Nov. 15.

1 grand prize winner will receive $2,500, 5 runners up will get $1,000 each and 20 runner-runner up winners will receive a burrito party for 20 guests.

So if you didn’t already have a costume picked out for Halloween this seems like some tasty motivation to come up with one.

I’ve seen locations in Huber Heights, in Beavercreek across from The Greene, in Fairborn in the former Fulmer’s grocery store location and near the former Old Time Pottery off of Miamisburg Centerville Rd.

I’ve also spotted Spirit Halloween stores in Springfield, Waynetown Plaza in Huber Heights, and Sugarcreek Plaza on Wilmington Pike.

Halloween Express has returned to it’s Beavercreek location for the last several years off of N. Fairfield Road behind Chili’s. They also show locations on Springboro Pike in Miamisburg, as well as West Chester and Cincinnati.

Where have you spotted your favorite Halloween stores?

Target.com has opened their online Halloween page for the season.

In addition to the usual assortment of decorations they have a “costume finder,” which really amounts to searching by category but hey, at least it’s organized.

They also have an online promo going right now that if you spend $50 you get free shipping on most items.

This year’s decorations lineup doesn’t differ much from last year. It’s got fall, funny, gory and typical elements. While Target usually has some sort of theme to their seasonal merchandise (typically a set of characters or a specific color scheme, style of decor) the online offerings don’t indicate one this year. I guess we’ll have to wait until the merchandise is in stores to see what this year’s will be.

Where’s your favorite place to shop for Halloween items?

It may only be early August, but Halloween and fall items are starting to show up in many area stores.

Already I’ve spotted fall and Halloween items at Christmas Tree Shops, Michaels, Hallmark and a few items at Deal$ and Dollar Tree stores.

At Michaels (at least the Beavercreek location), they’ve put out this year’s Lemax Spooky Town display. Things I noted about this year’s collection: they seem to have given up on the western town theme from the last few years, they’ve also ditched the motorcycle themes and this year’s theme seems to be much more fall fun/typical Halloween themed. I also noticed that like in year’s past, Michaels has several exclusive pieces that aren’t in Lemax’s 2010 collection list and on the other hand, is missing some new items from this year’s collection. Also, like with most things in this economy, the prices for most of the pieces have gone up from last year.

Michaels also has their usual assortment of spooky candles, candleabras and other decorations for your home and/or a party.

Hallmark’s Halloween specials are a “Dancin’ Frankenstein” who dances and sings “Monster Mash.” He is $14.95 with the purchase of 3 cards or $29.95 alone.

They also have the Creaky, Squeaky Treat House — $9.95 with Hallmark purchase, a black Halloween Ornament tree — $12.95, ornaments sold separately as well as lighted ghost or cat Glitter Globes for $6.95.

Christmas Tree Shops’ latest flyer features Primitive Halloween decor as well as a variety of Harvest/fall decoration items.

A co-worker also tells me that Yankee Candle stores (and online also) are bursting with festive Halloween candles and accessories.

Have you spotted Halloween items anywhere?

Planning a party for the 4th?

If you’re planning a 4th of July party (the 4th is on a Sunday this year!), chances are you’ll want some decorations and patriotic tableware.

You’re in luck! OrientalTrading.com has tons of 4th supplies to choose from and most of them are on sale now. You can get a patriotic bunting flag for just $4.99 (it comes in at least 3 different styles). They also have plenty of party favors, indoor and outdoor decorations and more to prep your home for your party… right down to the bathroom.

The standard fare for a summer party usually requires a fork and knife, napkins and often includes chips and dip. They’ve got you covered with a Patriotic Dip Cooler, shaped like Uncle Sam’s hat that holds ice to keep your dip cool (and safe!) and a flag utensil caddy to carry the plastic silverware and napkins to the table in style — both sale priced at $7.99 each.

When the party’s over and you don’t want to be stuck with all of those leftover cupcakes and treats, send your guests home with a cupcake that looks like it came from a patriotic bakery. The star-spangled treat boxes (12 for $2.99) will dress up even the plainest cupcake. But if you’re inclined to make your cupcakes sparkle, these 4th of July cupcake papers and picks can help. You get 200 pieces (papers and picks) for $3.99 which is a good deal — if you need to bake 100 cupcakes. If you’re making a standard batch you might do better to buy a single package from your favorite grocery store, craft store or Christmas Tree Shops location (I found a package there recently for $1). Otherwise you’ll want to have somewhere to store the leftover papers/picks until next year.

So are you having a party? Where do you find the best deals for festive party supplies?
