Trotwood-Madison fan protests district title loss to the Centerville Elks (plus Fort Loramie fever & Welcome Stadium face-lift)

Saying the team was robbed by a referee’s whistle, a Trotwood-Madison High School fan is protesting the Rams’ 52-51 loss to Centerville in a Division I district championship game at UD Arena on Saturday, March 14.

The fan complained to the Ohio High School Athletic Association on Monday, asking the governing body to rescind Centerville’s victory and replay the game before the Elks face Cincinnati La Salle in a regional semifinal at Xavier University’s Cintas Center on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Centerville’s Matt Kavanaugh sank the winning free throw with eight-tenths of a second to go after Rams guard Marcus Graham was called for a foul.

Roslyn Thornton, a technology support aide for Trotwood-Madison City Schools, included her letter of protest to OHSAA Commissioner Daniel B. Ross in an E-mail to all Trotwood personnel. The Dayton Daily News obtained the E-mail on Monday night.

“We need to all stand up for the boys basketball team,” wrote Thornton, who asked for “everyone that witnessed the game to write” to the OHSAA, the Southwest District Athletic Board and politicians. “Don’t wait until (today) because it may be to late. Send it NOW! We cannot stand for our students to be treated this way. This is the strongest way to fight back.

“I recommend the (OHSAA) bring justice to these tournaments and recall this game before Centerville plays again. I urge that Trotwood boycott these tournaments until justice is done.”

Fort Loramie fever

What’s in the water in Fort Loramie? And what do they feed the boys basketball players?

It must be something good because the Redskins (16-8) are tall, strong and ready to face Lockland (16-7) in a Division IV regional semifinal today at 6:15 p.m. at Kettering’s Trent Arena.

“It’s just a lot of passion, a lot of hard work and a lot of tradition,” Fort Loramie AD Chad Wells said. “A lot of things those kids saw growing up, their dads, uncles and cousins all did before them. So they’re just following in line.”

First-year head coach Karl Ratermann wasn’t hired until August because of the late resignation of Eric Gabriel.

“I didn’t have any time with the kids in the summer,” Ratermann said. “Everything was new.”

Now the Redskins are four victories away from adding a fourth state championship (1977, ‘87, ‘93) to the trophy case.

“We have a rotation of about nine guys and they all give 100 percent,” Ratermann said. “It starts with our effort on defense. That’s kept us in all the games. Now we’re really starting to jell offensively.”

Welcome face-lift

The old 50-foot, single-level press box at Welcome Stadium has been torn down. A new two-tier, 70-foot press box is expected to be in place for the Dayton Relays on April 24.

Whitley Manufacturing Co, Inc. — which specializes in modular buildings — is constructing the press box at its South Whitley, Ind., headquarters and is scheduled to ship the structure to Dayton on March 23.

“Our goal is to have it up and running for the Dayton Relays,” Dayton Public Schools AD Jonas Smith said. “We’ve got to have it in place by then.”

It was clearly a foul at the end of the game. I didn’t attend the game, but I watched the video on daytondailynews.com and it replays the OBVIOUS foul that t-wood committed. I’m sorry you lost, but that’s the game!!!

Right Ms. Thornton! Although I doubt you will receive a suitable response, you are correct. The refs took the game out the players hands and decided a great game with one abysmal call. A terrible shame, and those 3 should be ashamed.

The Trotwood player could have knocked down the Centerville player and the Trotwood fans would still be crying that it wasn’t a foul. Good call Ref!

Trotwood, why is it that everytime you lose a close game, it is always the Referee’s fault. Remember SPORTSMANSHIP, the game is over !!!!!

I like her comment, “Trotwood should boycott these tournaments until justice is done.” That seems like the worst idea ever. Your season would be pointless. This isn’t AAU, you can’t choose what you play in. Your season would be pointless without the OHSAA Tourney. Stop whining. You lost. That last call isn’t what lost the game for you, it was your poor play throughout the entire game.

I was at the game on march 14th. It was terrible to see them cheat trotwood boys like that. They didn’t have to make up calls the way they did and every call the refs made was VERY noticable! I believe they should play again with some refs thats going to call the game correct.

Remember the Trotwood-Centerville game held at UD from 3 or 4 years ago? It was exactly the same thing. Refs making questionable calls to keep the game close. They know the only way C-ville can win is by keeping them at the free throw line. Staley has the refs in his back pocket year after year. Its ridiculous how much he gets away with….even during summer league basketball. Its about time someone stands up! GOOD FOR YOU ROSLYN!!!

Watch the tape and you will see it is clearly a foul. Stand up to the fact that you lost and move on. Be proud of a fine season and all that you have accomplished. Sounds like a sore loser’s mentality saying you were cheated. Excuses are a dime a dozen.

Without seeing a tape of the entire game and determining how the referees were calling the entire game, it’s hard to form an opinion on the last 1 minute of the game. Looking at the box score, though, I see that Trotwood had 26 free throw attempts and Centerville had 32 free throw attempts, so the referees were calling the game close the whole night. With that being said, the video clearly shows the Trotwood player smacking the elbow of the Centerville player while he’s in the act of shooting. By rule, this is a foul and entitles the shooter to 2 foul shots. This was a good call by the ref. It’s ridiculous that people are using the term “cheating” when expressing their disappointment in Trotwood’s loss, and to formally protest the game and demand a do-over is even more ridiculous. Get over it!

what an extremely poor example we are setting by throwing a temper tantrum. And all those complaining about Centerville “cheating all night” obviously were not at this game. It was a hard-fought battle between two of the best teams in Dayton - nothing more, nothing less. Someone had to lose. Last year, it was Centerville. This year it was Trotwood. Be thankful that you have kids you can be proud of giving their best effort in a productive activity.

Frank, a temper tantrum is what took place when the family of the CHS wrestler who stole from the cafeteria went to court.

ramfan, why are you even bringing that up? That has nothing to do with this story. That is the epitome of a sore loser that tries to bring in opinions that has nothing to do with the issue at hand. Grow up Peter Pan. You lost, do better next year.

JMF - I was clarifying to FRANK what a temper tantrum was by using a scenario that fits the definition perfectly.

Staley has the refs in his back packet? If anything, they go the other way, because he makes so much noise. The excellent coverage by the News videographer definitively proves the foul at the end. Why would the DDN even print this rubbish about a protest. It serves no purpose. A bigger, more troubling question, is why was absolutely nothing done to the coach who put his players’ safety at risk. That’s instant dismissal ANYWHERE, even in Bloomington, Indiana.
