ST. IGNATIUS LINEBACKER

HAS TIES TO DAYTON AREA

Northmont coach Lance Schneider takes his Thunderbolts to Northeast Ohio today, Saturday, Sept. 5, for a 7 p.m. showdown against defending Division I state champion Cleveland St. Ignatius.

The game will be played at Byers Field in Parma. The Wildcats are led by senior linebacker Scott McVey (6-1, 230), who has committed to Ohio State. McVey’s grandfather, Larry McVey, is the former wrestling coach at Fairmont East High School

Q. How did the two-year, home-and-away series with St. Ignatius come about?

A. There were two teams in Ohio that needed a game during Week 2 last year and this year, and we were them. I checked the OHSAA Web site in the fall of 2007. We were still kind of struggling to find a game, and so were they.

Q. How important is this game for Northmont?

A. It’s just a good measuring stick for our program. Last year, we weren’t quite good enough (a 23-3 loss). We hope we’re a little better than we were. We’ve just got to go up there and see where we’re at.

Q. Win or lose, what will take from this game?

A. You’ve got to play the best teams to get yourself ready for your conference and playoffs. If you can’t beat ‘em, you’re not good enough anyway. And if you do beat ‘em, then you know you’re a pretty good team.

Q. What’s your itinerary?

A. The buses leave at 9 o’clock Saturday morning. We’re eating breakfast at the Bob Evans here. We’ll get up there (Byers Field in Parma), unload our equipment and have a walk-through. We hit the Olive Garden right down the street, and then come back and beat Ignatius. We’ll be back around 2:30 (a.m. Sunday).

You gave them a nice fight, then they woke up and the score showed you still have a way to go. BUT at least you are going outside the Dayton area for Games. You really need to play the BEST in Ohio or USA if you are ever going to bring back a State Title. Still a ways to go on that.
