ESPN, others coming to Kettering for Flyin’ to the Hoop
Eric Horstman said he just got the official word this morning. The director of the upcoming Flyin’ to the Hoop boys basketball event said ESPN is expected to have two recruiting reporters at Fairmont’s Trent Arena on Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.
Scout.com and Rivals.com, arguably the country’s two premier recruiting sites, will also have reporters on scene for the 31-team, three-day event that has become one of the country’s most notable prep basketball happenings on the annually recruiting calendar.
In an hour-long chat over coffee at Panera Bread, Horstman also laid out his finalizing of plans for the event, which include lodging, meals and the regular assortment of last-minute challenges in putting a weekend event together.
This season’s event will be the eighth playing of Flyin’ to the Hoop, which has grown from a tournament format to a weekend full of matchups between some of the area’s best teams and top recruits from throughout the country.
Local teams like playing for the exposure to recruiters who often visit. The national teams have said they like playing in this event for its organization and competitiveness.
The Saturday-through-Monday event will be Jan. 16-18. There’s no question it has become a must-circle weekend on the local athletics calendar.

How exciting….watching teams play no defense and guys take three point shots and dunks. This event so overrated. Seen it a few times…it is very difficult to watch.

There have been some blowouts but for instance last year Centerville almost upset Montrose Christian and Wayne took #1 Findlay Prep down to the last shot. With 18 games theres going to be some blowouts and who doesn’t like to see dunks. Look at the talent coming if you like basketball it’s three straight days of fun!

Cody, obviously if ESPN, Rivals, and Scout are coming it’s worth taking a look. Plus I heard Coach Cal may come up Monday to take a look at Brandon Knight. Ive been going for the past 5 years and will say its one of the best run events around from a basketball fan perspective.

This is also a great opportunity for Kettering to show off a first-rate athletic facility… one of very few dedicated to high school athletics in this area.

I haven’t gone since it was moved from Vandalia. It is an OK event, but not worth driving accross town for.

It is more than worth the drive…and I come from over an hour away. Colleges coaches fly in personally…Rick Pitino was there last year. The Dayton area has a lot of talent, not just the dunks and the treys, and Flying To The Hoop helps to showcase this talent against ranked talent from across the country. I was more than impressed with Wayne and Findlay Prep last year. We stayed around afterward to talk with Coach Trice…we had to wait while coaches came up to compliment him on the team’s level of play. It’s not overrated at all…it’s gaining more and more national attention as a first class showcase…look at the ranked teams that made it a priority to be on the play list.
