Jefferson’s 6-10 center will face two 5-5 guards in semifinal
Bedford St. Peter Chanel basketball coach Bernie Tarr almost snickers as he rattles off the lineup that will be facing 6-foot-10 Jefferson center Adreian Payne.
“There are times we’ll go 5-5, 5-5 and 5-9 on the floor at the same time,” Tarr said today, March 22, during a teleconference with state semifinal coaches. “Size to us has always been looking up at the other team, and this will be an even bigger chore for us.”
Jefferson will face St. Peter Chanel in a Division IV state semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus. Aside from Payne, Jefferson boasts 6-3 Cody Latimer and 6-3 Joby Jackson in the starting lineup.
For St. Peter Chanel, 5-5 point guard Tommie Williams is backed up by another 5-5 point guard, Zarell Patton. But Tarr said St. Peter Chanel alum Bam Childress, who helped the Firebirds to a 1999 state title before playing football at Ohio State, has been helping in practice.
“Bam was probably the quickest player we ever had, and they go toe-to-toe in practice,” said Tarr, who is 166-74 in 11 seasons at the school. “(Williams) is just about the only player I’ve ever seen give Bam fits getting up the court.”
