Wayne to play in Herbstreit Series at Ohio Stadium

The Wayne High School football team will be one of eight to play in the Ohio portion of the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series at Ohio Stadium during Labor Day weekend.

The Warriors moved their scheduled game against Canton McKinley to the Herbstreit Series and will play at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5. That will follow Dublin Coffman’s game against Westerville South in the doubleheader, and both games will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Two more games will be played on Monday, Sept. 6, in the four-game event.

It will be Wayne’s second consecutive game to open the season broadcast on an ESPN platform. Wayne coach and athletic director Jay Minton said the Warriors will open their season on Sunday, Aug. 29, against Moeller as part of a doubleheader at St. Xavier High School in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. Broadcast information for that game will be determined later, Minton said.

It will be Wayne’s second matchup with McKinley in consecutive seasons. Last year, the Warriors topped the Bulldogs 27-14 at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium.

That game was a one-year commitment. Minton said the schools created a new two-year deal that included Wayne traveling to McKinley this season and McKinley coming to Wayne in 2011.

But, with the Herbstreit Series opportunity — and concerns that construction to Wayne’s Heidkamp Stadium could create complications for a major home game in 2011 — convinced the Warriors to move the game to Ohio Stadium. The schools also added a year onto their contract, which means they’ll play in Columbus this season, at Canton in 2011 and at Wayne in 2012.

“It’s exciting any chance you have to play in the Shoe, and it’s great exposure and opportunity for our kids,” Minton said. “Plus, it’s a motivating thing. They know if they’re not prepared, it’s going to be on national television.”

Tickets will go on sale June 1. Adult tickets are $15, and student tickets are $10. They can be purchased through the participating schools or on the event’s website.

The event will also host four games at Cowboys Stadium on Monday, Sept. 6.

Fairmont promotes football assistant to head coach

Andy Aracri, a member of the Fairmont High School football staff for nine seasons, has been promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach, Firebirds athletic director Brian Donoher said.

Aracri, who was a three-year starter at defensive line for Fairmont before playing at Miami University, replaces Brian Blevins, who resigned last month.

Donoher said the 32-year-old Aracri handled operation of the program after Blevins resigned and has proven he’s ready for a head coaching opportunity.

“He’s a Fairmont guy,” Donoher said. “He grew up in Kettering, played for Fairmont and learned under two great coaches at Miami in Randy Walker and Terry Hoeppner. He’s passionate about Fairmont and the kids in Kettering.”

Aracri was a second-team All-Ohio selection as a senior at Fairmont in 1995 before walking on at Miami. By his sophomore year, Aracri was named the RedHawks’ outstanding defensive lineman and became an All-Mid-American Conference selection.

Fairmont football job likely to be filled next month

Fairmont hasn’t conducted any formal interviews for its open head football coaching position. But Ad Brian Donoher estimates the job has drawn inquires from “30-35 people,” he said on Friday, April 16.

A five-person search committee will likely name the new coach next month. At least five candidates will be identified from all those interested for the interviews process.

The position opened last month when Brian Blevins resigned following seven season. Blevins said he hopes to land as an assistant coach at Wayne.

T-M’s Thomas headed to Ashland; Dunbar’s Bass to Oakland

Trotwood-Madison’s DaWuan Thomas (Ashland University), Blake Cokes (UNC-Ashville), Kira Beckham (Tiffin), Kara McLemore (Cincinnati State) and Derricka Henry (Cincinnati State) all will sign national letters of intent to accept college athletic scholarships on Wednesday, April 14.

Dunbar’s Ryan Bass (Oakland) will do the same.

Wednesday is the first day of the regular signing period, and runs through May 19. The early signing period was Nov. 11-18.

All will play basketball except Beckham, who’ll join Tiffin’s track and field program.

Thomas flourished as a 6-foot-1 senior guard for the Rams (19-5). He averaged 18.6 points, 6.1 assists and 3.0 steals.

He also swept plenty of postseason honors, including the DDN Division I, GWOC North and District 15 players of the year, was first-team All-Southwest District and third-team All-Ohio.

“This is a great day for a special kid who really improved tremendously over the last two years and for the entire Trotwood basketball family,” said Rams coach Mark Baker in a release.

“In the last two years, five players have received basketball scholarships that total more than $500,000. This is more rewarding than winning.”

Ashland, a D-II program, was 13-15 last season.

Bass made the most of his only season at Dunbar after transferring from Chaminade Julienne. The 5-9 guard averaged 12 points and 3.0 assists and was especially effective in Dunbar’s D-II state tournament weekend.

In the state semifinal, Bass tallied 14 of his 16 points in the second half to spark the Wolverines to an incredible 69-62 defeat of Cleveland Benedictine. Dunbar trailed by 18 points in the first half.

He also hit 6 of 8 shots and was good for 13 points in a title-clinching 64-50 defeat of Port Clinton. Dunbar finished 25-3.

Oakland, located partly in Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills, Mich., was 26-9 last season and lost to Pitt in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Thirteen players/teams from middle schools and high schools were hit up with OHSAA violations during the recently completed winter sports seasons, including Wayne H.S. Those infractions were detailed by the OHSAA in its recent meeting on Thursday, March 1.

Penalties ranged from team win forfeitures to player ineligibility. The infractions varied, but a recurring theme among the violators was participating in a non-OHSAA event or league while also being on a school team.

The OHSAA didn’t reveal how the 13 incidents were initially brought to its attention.

The following is a summary of the schools and violations the OHSAA released in its minutes of that meeting:
