Marshall basketball coach moving to Edison CC

John Ralph, who spent eight years coaching the Marshall High School boys basketball team, has accepted the men’s basketball head coaching position at Edison Community College in Piqua.

Ralph said the timing for a move felt right when a senior class with which he had grown close, including forward Greg Gainey and guard Shawn Robinson, graduated in the spring. In talking with a coaching friend about the class moving on, Ralph learned Edison was searching for a coach, and he met with Edison Athletic Director Chip Hare.

Ralph’s resignation will be effective July 15, said Jonas Smith, the Dayton Public Schools athletic director.

“It was completing a big cycle,” Ralph said about the senior class, which as juniors (including guard Juwan Staten) advanced to the Division II state championship game. Last season, after Staten departed for Oak Hill Academy, the Cougars lost to eventual state champion Dunbar in a D-II regional final.

“I’m not bashful in telling anybody that those guys — Greg Gainey, Shawn Robinson, Juwan Staten before he left, then others, people who didn’t have marquee names — beyond being good basketball players they are such great people. They’re good students and citizens and come from solid families.”

Ralph is a former assistant coach at Alter High School and spent time as a volunteer assistant coach at Sinclair Community College early in the 2000s. He said his time with Sinclair helped him feel familiar with Edison, the junior college level and the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference, of which Edison is a member.

Hey, John.Don’t let the door hit you in the azz. No group of kids ever overcame coaching to do well than tesms you tried to screw up at Marshall. Noe Edison State can see what a fraud you are.

hey coach we wish you all the best in all that you do, we thank you for all that you have done with these fine young men whom you and the rest of your staff have been working with. I pray that someone from your old staff steps up and take over and continue to help these young men grow both on and off the basketball court may God bless you and your family.

Renaldo O`neal the assistant coach at Dunbar would be the perfect fit at Marshall,he is a huge reason why Dunbar has such a good program.

How can anyone else name be mentioned before the current assistant coach Dwayne Chastain. Everybody knows that Ralph didn’t do anything

Art Winston the head coach at Jefferson would be my first choice for Marshall,he has two state titles at Jefferson and did it with very little talent, plus he beat Dunbar last year.

No talent Art had two of the top big men in the area AP and Latimer, and Jefferson is DIII. With the talent they’ve had he should have two in the last three years. I know Thurgood didnt win state 2 years ago but the had Gainey sitting on the bench with two bum ankles.Lets not also forget that Thurgood lost Staten and Gates which total about 40 points out of their starting line up and when everybody cancelled them out they made it to the regional finals.

Who ever the coach is will have to know how to beat Dunbar which will be very tough to do thats why you take a guy who went to Dunbar, played for Dunbar, and coached against and beat them Art Winston.

Wow yall come on here to look very dumb. Lets not forget Mr.Ralph has been coaching longer then or as long as most of the crappy coaches that was named. Chastain is only a assistant he doesn’t have the brains to lead a team anywhere. Ralph led them to the state finals they tried last time and lost by 4 points who cares the better team won. But I insure you that the next coach that works for Thurgood won’t be able to do what Coach Ralph was able to do and will do at his next school. Mr. Ralph has earned and will contiune to have my respect.

Mr. Ralph was not a good coach he was an average highschool coach. The talent was their and he didn`t get it done, it is time for a change at Marshall.

Ok Mr.Hoopz go apply for the job and see what you can do since you got so much to say about someone you don’t know nor probably played basketball. Yall don’t understand how much stress it is to coach a team who don’t want to be coached by some body who yall say don’t fit in. MARSHELL WILL BE ABLE TO DO WHAT THEY HAVE IN THE PASS stop thinking that the team will be better because it won’t

Mr.Ralph is leaving because the talent is gone Gainey,Staten and Gates carried Marshall. Now that the crew is gone he wants to leave, Because he knows he can`t beat Dunbar anytime soon.

Hell Ralph didnt do nothing while he was there. Did anyone of you attend the games. All he did was stand there. He did call any plays he didn’t make any adjustments. He was the same way when Billy Staten was there also. He is not that good of a coach.I took my father to a game and he asked me who the head coach was because he thought it was Chastain. Thurgood will be just as good don’t sleep on them , everybody counted them out last year and they made it to the regionals when they were suppose to only win thier first round game

Thurgood has not talent. All they have is a bunch of kids with big heads whom think they are Mr Basketball. They sit and get high and drunk all the time with the coaching staff. Thurgood will never make state again.

I believe we should focus more on what teacher will replace Mr. Ralph and why Thurgood Marshall (or Dunbar for that matter)fail to meet more than 1 of 15 State Academic Standards…failing schools won’t last long

We are talking about basketball and not Academics,Dunbar has produced plenty of good students but the haters pick on Dunbar because they excel in sports.Dunbar is a good school, just like any other school those who want to learn will learn and those who dont wont.

Art Winston would be a good coach but don’t get it twisted with him beating Dunbar this year. What does that make his record against Dunbar 1-25 so use something else to boost him on.

Hey sunshine Art Winston just won a division 3 state title,he beat the team that won the division 2 state title(DUNBAR),and his team could have beat the team that won the division 1 state title now twist that.

Wow! Mr. Hoopz I bet you a high school drop out. Cause you can’t spell right or use proper English. Yeah go head and be the new coach they would love you. That school is so dysfunctional. Mr.Ralph is the only one with since to leave. With over 30 years of coaching experience coach Ralph has been around in the game that he could go pro if needed. Half of yall don’t got the experience or degrees that Mr. Ralph has. If you don’t like Mr. Ralph stop following his every move. I’m done for now haha.
