2002 D-IV state semifinal: Kenton 48, Alter 28
KETTERING - Kenton might be new to Alter’s players, but the Knights’ coaching staff knows all about the Wildcats’ air force.
Alter (10-2) plays Kenton (11-1) in a D-IV, Region 16 final Friday night at Wapakoneta’s Harmon Field. The Wildcats are led by junior passing sensation Maty Mauk.
Kenton, led by QB Ben Mauk, Maty’s older brother, beat Alter 48-28 in the 2002 D-IV state semifinal at Piqua, “and in many respects, we played a great ballgame,” recalled Knights coach Ed Domsitz.
“It was a windy night and we had hoped for bad weather because we knew the older Mauk boy could throw the ball. We got our wish. I think the game was even postponed from Friday to Saturday.
“It was very windy and cold and he was on fire. The receivers would get a step or two on our defensive backs and it made just for a miserable night. And we had a pretty darn good team that year.”
Ben Mauk lit the Knights up by completing 23-of-36 passes for 465 yards and seven scores.
That Kenton team lost its first two games, than ran the table, winning 13 straight and not scoring less than 33 points to secure its second straight D-IV state championship.
