Football association proposes white shirt and tie tribute to Tressel

A state-wide tribute to former Ohio State University football coach Jim Tressel has been proposed by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association.

Solon coach Jim McQuaide has proposed to association members that all head coaches be decked out in a white shirt and tie for Week 1 games. The suggested game gear is not mandatory.

The state-wide gesture is to salute Tressel “for all he did to help (the OHSFCA) and high school football while he was the head coach at Ohio State.”

Tressel resigned as the Buckeyes coach amid a flurry of NCAA infractions that among other things resulted in his suspension from the first five games of the coming season. OSU just this week reworded his departure as a retirement.

Tressel was inducted into the OHSFCA hall of fame last Friday. The association’s announcement was released through JJ Huddle.

Mike-you need to grow up a bit with your junior high attempt at humor with your name. Otherwise I agree totally with what you had to say.

Sounds about right to me. osu should honor their own, afterall he set the example or was he just following what was already there. Schools get the kind of coaches they deserve. Institutional control at its finest.

How can Ohio State fans be so delusional? This man lied and cheated so he could use players all season…why?…just to win. His past of winning at all costs goes back as far as his YSU years. What a fine example he’s shown for our H.S. kids…yes, let’s honor him. As long as we win on the field, character, honesty, and class don’t matter I guess.

For a liar and a cheater who was forced to resign in shame? Great example for our young folks.

this is a good idea..because the coaches that actually go along with this should be fired because they believe it is okay to lie and cheat if you coach amatuer football players

I am a fan of Jim Tressel and the GOOD things he did for our program. I am not even against honoring him in this fashion…but isn’t it a little early in the game to do something like this? With everything so fresh in everyone’s mind and still ongoing, it doesn’t send a good message to the kids. He was a great coach and a great leader…but he did cheat. A few years down the road maybe.

In today’s society it is viewed as OK to do these things under the guise of “helping young men” with their futures. It has never been acceptable to lie and then cover up with another lie. We wonder why we have all these youth problems today. Shootings, drugs, immoral behavior is all just the by product of lack of discipline at a very young age.

I’m sure Tressel made an impact on HS football throughout the state (in both official and unofficial recruiting attempts), but is it really appropriate to ‘honor’ someone who was let go for violating a fundamental rule in his contract. Is this any different from the uproar surrounding Pryor’s eye black with ‘VICK’ written on it?

Isn’t this embarrassing for y’all. I’m not a fan of Ohio St., never was, but I’m not really starting to feel bad how, what seems like, a majority of the fanbase legitimately feel like Tressel did nothing wrong when the fact of the matter is he deceived an entire fan base for nearly a decade. My suggestion is to start supporting Fickle, better yet, support the school and don’t coach worship. Y’all are becoming as bad as Alabama fans when it comes to that.

Of course! The perfect message to send to high schoolers is that it’s admirable to cheat and lie about it, as long as you win a lot and act dignified.

When is the Art Schlichter gambling tribute scheduled for? Are they doing something for Pete Rose too? The message we are sending to the rest of the country is Ohio is the home of cheaters, liars, and hypocrites. OHSFCA is a disgrace.

What you all fail to realize is Tressel did FAR more good than he did bad in his tenure as coach. Ask anyone that has played underneath him (Ray Small excluded). They will all tell you that they are better men for having played under Tressel. He made a mistake, no denying it. Luckily that will not be his legacy (although many of you would prefer it be). He turned boys into men, he got kids to graduate and developed a lot of upstanding citizens. In the big picture, he did it the right way.

Sooooo, how does that make him any more worthy of this stupid “honor” than the millions of coaches who DIDN’T lie and cheat? Oh, by the way, ask the kids still at OSU and incoming recruits if “Tressel did FAR more good than he did bad” when they’re sitting out of bowl games and finishing in the Big 10 cellar when the NCAA strips a whole bunch of scholarships.

This speaks volumes as to what the root cause is of the decline of values at Ohio State. You have kids influenced by coaches/teachers like Solon coach Jim McQuaide who obviously lack intergrity. Then they go to college and think they do not have to follow the rules. How could a public school system allow someone in such an influential postion make a hero out of a disgraced and dishonest football coach who made millions in public money while cheating?

Good News …. HC Jim Tressel was an amazing head coach + lead the Big Ten Conference with Academic players more than Northwestern or Purdue + won 7 Big Ten Titles in 10 seasons + 5 out of 8 BCS Bowl Games + 1 out of 3 National Championship Games and in 25 years of Head Coaching played in 13 National Championship Games + won 100+ games at two different NCAA College Football Schools … Wow !

Any Ohio HS football coach who would choose to honor scoundrel and cheat Jim Tressel by dressing like him for a game is not only a complete rube, but also a poor example of ethical leadership for the students he’s charged with coaching.
