Thurgood Marshall stuns Alter 35-27 in football playoff opener
Tavonn Crisp scored four touchdowns and Thurgood Marshall stunned previously unbeaten Alter 35-27 in the opening round of the Division III high school football playoffs Friday night at Welcome Stadium.
The Cougars (10-1) advance to the semifinals of Region 12 next Friday against unbeaten Springfield Shawnee, a 64-8 winner over Cincinnati Taft. The game will be played at a neutral site.
Crisp had TD runs of 32, 31, 19 and 10 yards. But his most important run was a two-point conversion with 3:33 left. That gave Marshall a 28-27 lead. The Cougars intercepted Knights QB Malik Zaire on the ensuing possession and Crisp added his final score with 1:18 left.
“It means that we can contend with anybody,” Crisp said.
“For the City League and the fans who came to the game to support, knowing that they still got a Dayton Public School in the playoffs fighting not to just win but to win the first football championship in DPS history.”
It’s believed to be the first City League playoff win since Dunbar defeated Kirk Herbstreit and Centerville in 1986. The only other City League football playoff win was Roth with Keith Byars in 1980.
“I’m just happy to win a playoff game, especially against a great program like Alter,” Marshall coach Earl White said.
“We said going into the playoffs that we wanted to play undefeated Alter in the first round. That was our goal and that’s what we got and the kids came out on top.”

Hey now, Bill be careful! How about some straight-up props for Marshall? It’s not like they’re not good — you have to be to make the playoffs… and remember, they had the home field, meaning they had the higher seed. Maybe Alter wasn’t fully ready. Maybe Marshall just had more to prove. Great work Cougars! Keep it rolling.

Alter still has three teams competing for state championships this weekend. One loss in one sport does not destroy a long history of sectional, district, regional and state championship playoff history. Play with pride and integrity Knights! The championships will continue on and off the field.

Must be nice to make the playoffs. We are “young” every year so we go 1-9 or 2-8. Congrats to Alter for a good year as usual & good job Thurgood.

Alter’s theme for the game was, “Welcome to Hell.” My children attend Alter, but I was elated when I heard Marshall won—much to their surprise. The news certainly explained the somber look on the faces of Alter parents and students as they were looking forward to Alter advancing in the playoffs. May God be with you and give you victory on the rest of your journey Thurgood Marshall. Great job on the parts of both teams and their coaches.

Having coached with Coach White at Colonel White and Thurgood Marshall I know first had the many struggles he has faced and will continue to face as a inner city coach. Just getting a team prepared to face a fine program and compete with the likes of Alter is a feat in itself. Many of you outside of the community dont have the slightest idea the issues he contends with to put a focused team on the field. Congrats Coach White you were victorious long before the first play was called. Go Cougars! Go Glenville!

I’ve been trying to follow this match-up the past week(s) & now I’m seeing why the info curve seemed a little on the quiet side. Impressive, great win for the school & their players certainly redeemed some “talk is cheap” coupons in regards to their past possible playoff chances. I’m ondat Big Blue kool-aid when it comes to the city BUT with springfield shawnee coming up I cant help but think pass the Thurgood Marshall mix & did’nt they use to whoop up on Taft worse than that just a few years back? Blessings & of course best wishes vs Springfield Shawnee.
