odds and ends

Here are a few odds and ends from the last school board meeting:

  1. There will be a vote next meeting on new advanced placement government textbooks for East and West. The books, “Government in America,” are college level and will apparently better prepare students for the AP exam.

  2. The board is considering a Technology Applications Curriculum that touches on different computer skills and applications such as Power Point, Excel and Word. It addresses internet safety, copy rights and netiquette. Students will learn to create a format documents for high school, college, life and business communications. Six of the weeks will focus on keyboarding. It will be offered this next school year for all Lakota seventh-graders.

  3. The class of 2014 will be required to earn four math credits, so the district is responding by trying to place programs to directly impact those students who must pass Algebra II in order to graduate.

Teacher Academy cut

I don’t know if you saw my story in the Pulse about Butler Tech cutting Lakota West’s Teacher Academy program, but I wanted to follow up here on the blog.

I am meeting with Butler Tech Monday to talk about all sorts of budget concerns and issues brought to my attention by residents and school board members. The board recently made some cuts to programs, including the Butler Tech online program. I will follow up with stories on the affects of some of these cuts, but what questions do you have? What would you like me to ask?

Tuesday the board meets, and Lakota parents plan to be there to protest the cut of Teacher Academy. I am hearing the union representatives from Butler Tech also may be there to discuss concerns with the way job cuts were handled. The board also plans to present a report on the recent “All Boards” meeting where board members gave feedback and posed questions and concerns for the administration.

What stories would you like to see on this matter?

Lunch price continued

In response to a reader’s comment, the food services program is self-sustaining, so any funds brought in go toward paying staff, food costs no reimbursed from the state, supplies, utilities, computers, software, etc.

First, the average cost of SW Ohio lunches for elementary is $2.02, junior high $2.25 and high school $2.28.

Projected revenue for 2009-2010 if prices increased:

Elementary/ECS: 786,154 meals at $1.75 will generate $1,375,769.50 Junior High: 218,896 meals at $2 will generate $437,792 High School: 287,717 meals at $2 will generate $575, 434 Total: 1,292,767 meals for $2,388,995.50.

Lunch price increase

The Child Nutrition department for Lakota is proposing an increase in lunch prices after more than 14 years of flat fees.

For lunch each day, students get 2 oz. of protein, a cup of fruits and or vegetables, a bread serving and 8 oz. of milk.

Right now the pay scale is the following: primary/elementary: $1.45; junior high $1.55 and high school $1.65 That is the cheapest of any local schools. The most expensive school is Sycamore, which charges between $2.50 and $3 for lunches.

The Lakota proposal is $1.75 for primary/elementary and $2 for junior and high schools.

What are your thoughts? I have tasted some of the food, and personally I think it is pretty good. Plus, you can’t beat a lunch for just $2, in my opinion.

Would a four-day school week work?

In tough economic times, some school districts around the country are turning to four-day school weeks. My cousins in Florida have been doing this for years, but apparently the trend is catching on. Read about it here. Think it could work in this area?
