What is pizza in a cup?
Hmmm… You’ll note that Sister Laura started a fun little conversation about favorite pizzas down below, and that some wiseguy left a comment that he loves something he called “Pizza in a cup.”
To which I ask: What the hell is pizza in a cup?
I know about chili pie or Frito pie or chili in a bag or whatever you want to call it … that sinfully yummy concoction by which you open a small bag of Fritos, toss in a handful of diced onions, a ladle full of chili and top it off with cheese, and then eat it out the bag… you need a long-handled spoon, but it’s good stuff.
But pizza in a cup? I admit it … I’m intrigued…

Tried this, pizza snobs?
Sister Laura here (I hate that moniker, but dislike ‘Brother Laura’ even more) … and feel compelled to publicly rave about my two favorite pizzas in the world, one of which I ate last night and again this morning — gotta’ love pizza versatility.
First, and easiest because they bring it to your door, is Pizza Hut’s thin crust Veggie Lovers. Mushrooms, black olives, green peppers, red onions, etc…. Beautiful.
Second is courtesy of Peach’s in Yellow Springs, which serves Mexican pizza with beans, chicken or beef - again, save the meat for a hot-dog binge and go with the beans, extra sour cream, and a fork.

Goofy restraurant policies…
I’m sure the management had some reasoning behind this story, but it was truly bewildering to loyal reader Tim Tye, who sent along this email about a certain popular local pizza chain… As he put it, this reminds one of the whole chicken-salad rant from “Five Easy Pieces” …
Thoughts, anyone?
Last Saturday … We ordered a couple of pizzas and two pitchers of drinks. When we ran low on soda, the consensus was that water would be fine to finish the meal.
So, I went to the bar and asked for a pitcher of water. As the girl started to fill the pitcher, a manager-type person appeared suddenly and informed me that pitchers of water were not allowed. I said, “Excuse me?” and he repeated himself.
I asked him if he realized how dumb that sounded. He said he was sorry I felt that way but that was (restaurant) policy. He did, however, say that I could have as many cups of water as I wanted.
I ended up getting six paper cups filled with water. We then emptied two of the cups into one of our empty pitchers and, voila, a pitcher of tap water was created at (the restaurant) for perhaps the first time ever.
I am really baffled by this policy, especially since their way involved using six disposable paper cups with plastic lids and my way involved using a pitcher that could be reused indefinitely. Not very green (although the cups actually are green).
Since you have had lots of experience with restaurants, I pose this question: What is the rationale for the “no water in pitchers” policy?

What’s your favorite cool-off drink?
Ahhhh, summer in Ohio. Up in the 90s, finally, and the sweat’s drippin’.
After you’ve been out in it and need to stip something tasty to cool off a bit, what’s your beverage of choice?
A good beer? An icy glass of lemonade? Diet Coke? Plain old delicious tap water? A Mojito?
What’s your favorite summertime drink? We want to know.

National Cheesecake Day!
Hmmm… just when you thought they had a day for everything, an apparently knowledgeable PR flak from New York has just emailed me to report that July 30 is … drum roll … National Cheesecake Day!
So, um, have some cheesecake and celebrate.
While we’re at it, what sort of cake do you wish they had a day for?
And who decides such things?

Belgian Bud!?!?!?!
Well, we all knew how this story would play out, once the initial headlines arose that the hostile takeover was in the works… Now, indeed, InBev, the company from Belgium that makes Stella and Beck’s, is taking over Anheuser-Busch.
Sooooo, do you beer drinkers out there think this is a good thing, or a bad thing? Does it even matter?
I mean, Stella Artois and Beck’s are definitely good products, and InBev seems pretty smart… Is this a case of a great American tradition getting sucked up by foreign money (did you hear about the Chrysler Building?) or is it a globalism-works-fine case of watery US beer about to get improved by smarter European tastes?
Weigh in here, please…

Swamp food
Ahoy, Brother Ron here, back from vacation: stopped by the Swamp Romp at the Fraze yesterday, at which the food is as much the attraction as the music, all of it fun and good.
So: Red beans and rice, or jamabalaya?
