Lebanon City Schools Treasurer Randy Bertram has been hired for the same position in the Northwest Local School district. Bertram sent a letter to the school board and to the media detailing his situation. It reads:
I eagerly anticipate starting my new position as the Treasurer and Chief
Financial Officer for Northwest Local Schools on August 1, 2008. My family and I
look forward to relocating to Cincinnati and becoming a part of the community. As
long time resident’s of Waynesville, we feel connected to the area and we are pleased
to be staying in southwest Ohio.
As I leave Lebanon City School District I want to commend the Board,
district staff and community for stepping up and helping this excellent school district
overcome some of the most difficult financial times it has seen. I am proud to say
that the district has been restored to financial stability and its’ integrity is once again
strong and vibrant. With a slow economy and unsettled state funding, the
community needs to understand that there are still challenges and needs that are
upon the district. Continued work and commitment by the staff and community are
of the utmost importance for Lebanon City School’s future. I wish all of you the
very best and I will miss this wonderful community and staff.
As the Treasurer for Northwest Local Schools I will work diligently with the
Board of Education, district staff and the community to plan objectives and clearly
reach goals while maintaining accurate and current financial data. I will strive for
financial integrity for the district and community.

Karrie Brown, English teacher at Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby, Ohio, figured out a way to get students who previously failed English classes to be interested in the subject. She used a program called Read 180, a reading intervention program that looks and feels like MySpace and Facebook, integral social networks for most American teens. Using Read 180, Brown facilitates differentiated learning for reading and writing through a Wiki, a collection of Web pages and other documents that can be created and edited individually or collectively on line. In the name of English Language Arts, Brown’s students post pictures, research projects, thoughts and questions on Wikispace.

With allegations coming over the weekend regarding another Mason schools employee being involved in inappropriate actions, the question begging to be asked is, what disciplinary action should be taken against teachers who participate in these activities, ranging from drinking with former students to engaging in sexual acts with under-age students?
The public can find out if any teachers have been disciplined for any reason by clicking here.

High School students: Are you working this summer? Where? And how hard was it, or has it been, to find a job?
I remember my summer jobs in sporting goods, day care and a college of medicine. Sporting goods should have been the best job, but I have to go with the college of medicine because I feel like I have been through the first year of med school at least twice. I have no comment about the day care job, but I did go back for a second summer for some reason.

Although it involves no deaths or natural disasters, the story of an autistic Florida boy who was kicked out of his class is a tragic one.
Teacher Wendy Portillo has been relieved of her teaching duties for her alleged tactics toward a 5-year-old boy that mirror the reality show “Survivor.”
The boy’s mother claims that her son was punished for symptoms of his disability, such as humming and eating his homework. She says Portillo went too far last week when she kicked the boy out of class, and then allowed the other students to vote on whether he should be allowed back in.
Although Portillo still has a job within the school, hundreds of parents of autistic children have already signed an online petition to get her fired.

According to Local 12, Ohio schools Superintendent Susan Tave Zelman has announced she intends to resign she has held for the past nine years.
Conflict arose in February when Gov. Ted Strickland proposed to seize control of the Ohio Department of Education and place it under an appointed education czar accountable to him. The move, if successful, would reduce Zelman and the 19 elected and appointed members of the State Board of Education to more advisory roles.
Zelman said she will resign whenever a new superintendent starts and will work in advisory role until December.

I want to personally congratulate and thank Mason High School support education teacher Hakim Oliver on being named the Autism Society’s Support Person of the Year. Oliver was nominated by Sue Miller, whose son Greg, has benefited from the time Oliver has spent working with him as the school’s mascot.
I had the chance to meet Greg several months ago, and he is an extraordinary person. He is finishing his junior year at Mason and is already making plans to go to college when he graduates. I wish Greg - and Mr. Oliver - the best.

Eight different acts-ranging from solos, to dance, to rap, and even a band—will take the stage Friday, May 23, to prove they are the best Waynesville High School talent.
Hosted by Mr. Stubbs, each act will face a panel of judges (Mrs. Lueth, Mrs. Tieman, and Mr. Gabbard) who will give their comments and scores to determine the winner of the $100 first prize. Second place will receive $50 and the third place competitor earns $25.
Waynesville Idol is presented by Thespian Troupe #4558, the WHS theatre honorary. Ticket sales for the competition support the troupe’s annual scholarship and awards, sponsorships to Thespian conferences, and other special events and workshops.
Waynesville Idol tickets are only available to WHS students, but you can find out who wins at the WHS Drama website.
