Can green stick? | Living Green

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Can green stick?

By coincidence, I received a link from a colleague to this archived ABC news story the same day a reader posted the following comment in response to the July 4 post:

“What does independence day have to do with going green? It is a day to remember that we are a free country, and to celebrate our independence. Leave the go green, feel good, and al gore money making liberal dogma for another day.”

The commenter is certainly entitled to his or her opinion, and I appreciate any and all comments on the blog.

Reading the article and comment side by side got me thinking:

Is the environmental awareness/sustainable living movement heading toward another popularity slump? Is it, as the article from last year suggests, more likely to stick due to legislative steps over the last year? Are you tired of being reminded to recycle and save gas, or do you consider it a necessary part of a modern lifestyle? Post your thoughts and let everyone know.

Hard to hooray for independence when we are finding ourselves so dependant on foreign oil…..

The green movement is in danger of what you term a “popularity slump”. As with any movement it has its excesses. I believe most folks are in concurrence with the philosophy and who doesn’t care about the environment; but, the politics of it is polarizing the country. I, for one, do not understand the huge opposition to energy exploration and development of our current reserves while at the same time bringing along alternative energies. The $4/Gal seems to be the tipping point which convinced people of the great need for alternative energies; but, it also has led them to the conclusion that we need to use our own reserves. Both will be needed now and for years to come. Seems to me a gradual phase out of those resources which are less desireable can occur as more and more desireable alternative energies come out of the lab and available in mass quantities. Forget who was right or wrong and put us in the spot we’re in - that really doesn’t matter. What does matter is that our foreign dependency places our national security at risk, folks are hurting, the economy is struggling and the perception is the environmental movement is choosing a pristine view over human beings, speculation about alternative energies that are a long way from the marketplace as opposed to pursuit of energy we know we can get to. Neither offers short term solutions but energy exploration is the closest to a sure thing in mid term solutions. If this country gets a reasoned plan and serious about doing something which everyone can support, it will happen. If the excesses of the environmental movement continue to rule the day, then look for a backlash.

TRS, you are right on the money. However, you must realize that a lot of environmental zealots want to determine how you live. You eat too much beef and other meat, drive too much. They believe you should live in a small house in the cities and use public transportation or bicycles. You and I use our reason to see the goal and determine the best way to get there without unnecessary pain.
