<title>Craving a beefy holiday romance? Head to White Castle</title>

Craving a beefy romance this Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day? Then reserve a steamy date at your local White Castle.

On Sunday, Feb. 14, you and your valentine can enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner complete with special menus, tableside service and themed decorations at your local White Castle. There are six restaurant locations in Butler County participating in the event, according to spokeswoman Denise Achberger.

Participating locations include:
Participating White Castle locations
4780 Roosevelt Blvd., Middletown
851 High St., Hamilton
1987 S. Erie Hwy., Hamilton
5590 Dixie Hwy., Fairfield
8111 Highland Point Drive, West Chester Twp.
1201 Hamilton-Lebanon Road, Monroe

Reservations must be made in advance to participate. Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day service will run from 4 to 8 p.m. To reserve a table, call the Cincinnati district office at (513) 559-0575, ext. 10.

The event, which was first offered in 1991, has become a tradition for some couples, said Jamie Richardson, vice president of corporate relations.

&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s been a huge hit because a lot of our loyal customers &amp;#8212; fondly known as &amp;#8216;cravers&amp;#8217; &amp;#8212; either met in a White Castle Restaurant or have other enjoyable memories they like to celebrate here,&amp;#8221; he said.

White Castle officials said they expect the demand for reservations to be even greater this year as residents seek low-cost Valentine&amp;#8217;s Day options. Richardson noted that a No. 3 Sack Meal for two at White Castle includes 10 hamburgers, two 21-ounce drinks and two regular fries for $10.49.

&amp;#8220;It&amp;#8217;s just one example of the value we&amp;#8217;ve offered customers since we began selling our famous steam-grilled hamburgers for a nickel in 1921,&amp;#8221; he said.

It was one of my best shopping trips ever and it was thanks in large part to the Kroger Mega Sale.

Last Saturday with a list in hand, I bought $210 worth of groceries at Kroger. Once at checkout, the combination of $30 in Mega Sale Instant Savings, coupons and a $50 gift card, I only paid $18. Even if you count what I would have paid without the gift card, that is a savings of 72 percent! This is proof that if you are serious about saving, you can make a huge dent in your budget by shopping smarter.

Now, Andrea Deckard over at Mommysnacks has helped compile a pretty comprehensive list of the items available in the Mega Sale and how much they cost after coupons. Use this to help you save big this week! I just couldn&amp;#8217;t have put together a better list! Thanks, Andrea!

Here&amp;#8217;s how the Mega Sale works. Buy any 10 participating items and get $5 off instantly at check-out. Mix and match any of the items to get the savings. Remember, SS= Smart Source insert, RP= Red Plum, P&amp;G= Procter &amp; Gamble, GM= General Mills.

If you play the sale right, you can get more than just the sale items and still wind up with big savings. Saturday I bought 2 gallons of milk, 2 loaves of bread, 1 package of hamburger buns, 5 bananas, 2 packages of ground beef, a marked down pot roast, Iams cat food (with a $3 off coupon) and carpet cleaner (with a $1 off coupon) and still got my total down through the Mega Sale savings.

I also use sales like this to try new things at a low price. That is how my husband was first introduced to Frank&amp;#8217;s Red Hot Sauce, to which he is now addicted. Last week, I ordered extra copies of the Frank&amp;#8217;s coupon and bought 14 bottles for just 19 cents each. Now we are set with sauce for at least the next couple of months.

Here&amp;#8217;s a list of my favorite picks for this week&amp;#8217;s sale after coupons and instant savings. Get all the savings here.

99 cents Armour Meatballs
99 cents New York Garlic Bread
49 cents Green Giant Steamers
19 cents Frank&amp;#8217;s Red Hot Sauce
FREE Hormel Chili
FREE Rotel Tomatoes
50 cent MONEY MAKER Quaker Quakes Rice Snacks
6 cent I Can&amp;#8217;t Believe It&amp;#8217;s Not Butter sticks

<title>Pay less to the IRS with these tax tips</title>

<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
Pay less to the IRS this year thanks to new tax credits and deductions available. I talked with local tax professionals and Internal Revenue Service officials on ways to get more return when you filed your taxes. Follow the tips below to cash in on your credits.

What you need

As of today, Jan. 31, you should have received the necessary reports to file your taxes. This include employment W-2s, 1099s, bank and loan interest statements, dividends and unemployment insurance. If you are claiming some of the credits below, make sure you have all the appropriate receipts and product information.

Should you itemize?

According to a 2003 government study, 2.2 million Americans paid too much taxes because they took the standard deduction instead of itemizing expenses. The IRS suggests you consider itemizing if:
Your total deductions are more than the standard deduction amount
You had large uninsured medical and dental expenses
You paid interest and taxes on your home are paid interest on a home equity loan
You had large unreimbursed employee business expenses
You had large uninsured casualty or theft losses
You made large contributions to qualified charities

Collect all of the above and see if the amounts add up to more than the standard deduction to decide if it is best to itemize.

Use the standard deduction

This is the fixed amount the IRS allows you to reduce your taxable income.
If you are married filing jointly, deduct $11,400. If you also own a home, you can take the standard property tax deduction of $1,000.
If you are single or married filing separately, deduct $5,700 plus the property tax deduction of $500 if you own a home.
If you are the head of the household, deduct $8,350 plus another $500 if you own a home.

Stimulus credits

Taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of federal stimulus package tax credits:
New car purchase: If you bought a new vehicle between Feb. 17 and Dec. 31, 2009, you can deduct the state and local sales tax plus any excise taxes paid if the vehicle was priced $49,500 or less. Elaine Hollon, owner of E-Tax in Middletown, said you can get the right amount on your sale receipt. Even if you took advantage of Cash for Clunkers, you can still claim this credit without itemizing.
First-time homebuyers: Residents purchasing their first home can claim 10 percent of the home&amp;#8217;s sale price up to $8,000. This means homes with a purchase price of less than $80,000 would not receive the full credit, Hollon said.
According to the IRS, to qualify as a first-time homebuyer, you must not have owned a primary residence within the last three years.
Legislation changes in November 2009 now require first-time home purchasers to file a paper return. Electronic returns will not receive the credit. Attach form 5405 to the return and the settlement statement showing all parties names, signatures, purchase price and date of purchase. New home construction buyers must attach the certificate of occupancy, the IRS said.
Existing home owners: Residents who have owned and used the same home as a principal residence for at least five consecutive years in the last eight years and are buying a new home can qualify for a $6,500 tax credit under new legislation. To claim the credit, IRS officials suggest attaching documents proving past home ownership including mortgage interest statements, property tax or homeowners&amp;#8217; insurance records.
Energy-efficiency improvements: Receive 30 percent of the cost up to $1,500 for energy-efficient upgrades, including new windows and doors, insulation, water heaters, heating and AC units or roofs. For more information, visit energystar.gov/taxcredits.

Other adjustments

There are many other deductions available to reduce your taxable income.
Earned Income Tax Credit: The EITC offers assistance to taxpayers whose incomes are below $48,279 for families with three or more qualifying children. For guidelines, visit irs.gov/eitc.
Moving expenses: The IRS allows you to deduct any expenses incurred if you moved more than 50 miles. Claim up to 24 cents per mile driven for moving purposes.
Individual retirement account payments: If you placed money into a traditional IRA, deduct that amount from your taxable income.
Student loan interest: Deduct the interest you paid on student school loans up to $2,500.
Tuition: If you are student or are supporting a college student, you can claim a $2,500 credit per student per year for four years through the American Opportunity credit. Or you can claim $2,000 per student per year for two years through the Lifetime Learning credit. Claim just one of these credits each year.
Classroom expenses: Teachers can claim up to $250 for classroom expenses.
Health Savings Account: If you have a savings account set up for health expenses, individuals can deduct up to $3,000 and families can deduct up to $5,950.
Child credit: Claim a $1,000 credit per child 17 years old or younger.
Dependent care credit: Claim a credit up to 35 percent of child care or dependent care costs. Limits are set at $3,000 for one child or dependent and $6,000 for two or more.
Business expenses: You can deduct any business-related expenses not covered by your employer. This can include claiming 55 cents per mile for business travel and the portion spent on supplies, education and phone or utility bill costs associated with your job.
Jobless benefits: Unemployment benefits up to $2,400 received in 2009 are tax-free.

For more information, call the IRS at (800) 829-1040 or visit irs.gov.

While you are there, select the other offerings available. I recently got a pack in the mail with lotion samples, coupons and more. Some of my favorites are the cat and dog food coupons. These are worth between $3-$10 depending on the day. Those really come in handy when the Procter &amp; Gamble sales come up!

McDonald&amp;#8217;s is hoping that offering more mocha for your money will get more people in the door buying its coffee products.

Today, and every Wednesday, get a free hot mocha McCafe at McDonald&amp;#8217;s until the deal ends at the end of February. There is no purchase necessary and no coupons to clip.

Seems like a pretty sweet deal. It&amp;#8217;s a national promotion but not all McDonald&amp;#8217;s may be participating. Also, heard from a restaurant employee that frappucinos will be making their way into the fast food chain. You can get iced coffees now, but not a true frappucino. Some stores in the Dayton area have been selected as test sites, with the new offering rolling out later this year, I hear. McDonald&amp;#8217;s is certainly making a push into coffee!
