The Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway is one of the biggest winged-sprint car events in the country. It just added a little more star power.

Eldora track owner and NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Tony Stewart and fellow Cup driver Kasey Kahne will compete against the National Racing Alliance (NRA) Sprint Invaders as an undercard to the $50,000-to-win Kings Royal on July 17-18 at the Darke County track.

“Any time I can get behind the wheel of a sprint car, I look back and appreciate my career,” said Stewart, an Indiana native who grew up running sprints in the Midwest. “When it comes to competition, I love to race and I love to win. Eldora will be no different.”

Added Kahne, “It doesn’t matter where I’m racing or what type of car I’m in. If I’m behind the wheel, I’m racing for the trophy … and it would be special to win at Eldora.”

Stewart and Kahne also field teams for the Kings Royal. Donny Schatz and Kraig Kinser drive for Stewart; Joey Saldana and Craig Dollansky for Kahne.

Kids To Enjoy Race Car Rides at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday

(Sent in by Kil-Kare’s Jerry Wahl)

Xenia, OH. - A smile on a young race fans face as they ride around the Kil-Kare Speedway in the race cars that they are used to seeing battling each other on the track is hard to replace. That is just what parents will be seeing Friday night — smiles — at the Greene County oval as the youngsters cruise around the track on race car rides for kids night.

In addition to the extra attraction of the rides, a full program of NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series events featuring the late models, Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts will entertain the fans with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

The big question is can last week’s feature winners repeat? And if so, three of the drivers will record their fourth win of the year and one will make five wins. Justin Alsip in the late models, Jack Jones in the modifieds, and Shawn Stansell all saw win number three come their way. Compact driver Ronald Sagers seems to dominate in the compacts with four wins, and will going for five.

Visit www.kilkare.com for further information, or call the track at (937) 429-2961.

<!--

ROSSBURG — For awhile, Jimmy Owens’ sixth Dirt Late Model Dream feature start was looking more like a nightmare.

Dirt racing dominator Scott Bloomquist and NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Tony Stewart were both ahead of him and proving difficult to pass. And worse, Owens’ oil light kept coming on. Once or twice he thought about pulling into the pits.

But as his car stopped spitting oil, Owens turned out to be pretty slick himself. Owens, who started 19th in the 24-car field and made it on a provisional from Friday’s qualifying, stormed past both Bloomquist and Stewart with a single pass coming out of turn four on lap 72 and was never challenged again to win the $100,000 Dream.

It was Owens’ first Dream win and will go nicely with his 2007 World 100 title.

“You’ve two of the best in the country, you’ve got a whole field of the best drivers in the country, and to be able to pass Scott and Stewart here is really great,” Owens said.

Stewart started on the pole, but Don O’Neal led the first 10 laps. Stewart regained the lead on lap 11 and held on through lap 36 when Bloomquist got the pass. Stewart regained the lead once more on lap 62 and held it until Owens pulled off the stunning pass, beating both Bloomquist and Stewart to the line.

Halfway through the 100-lap race, Owens considered calling it a night.

“My shield was full of oil on lap 50. I couldn’t see where I was going,” Owens said. “When we had that caution I was out of tear offs and I started wiping and finally got my shield clean. I don’t know if the car ran out of oil or what, but it finally stopped blowing oil.”

The only caution of the race enabled Owens to get a good view of the field, and maybe even visualize that victory.

“The oil light kept coming on and I was afraid the motor was going to blow up any minute,” he said. “Finally I just said the heck with it. If it blows, it blows. I just started running the car and was fortunate enough Tony moved out of his groove a little bit and that kind of messed him and Scott both up for me to get around them.”

Bloomquist, a five-time Dream winner and the defending champ, finished second. Darrell Lanigan, Jimmy Mars and Brian Birkhofer rounded out the top five.

Here’s how they finished: 1. Jimmy Owens, 2. Scott Bloomquist, 3. Darrell Lanigan, 4. Jimmy Mars, 5. Brian Birkhofer, 6. Tony Stewart, 7. Matt Miller, 8. Rick Eckert, 9. Don O’Neal, 10. Earl Pearson Jr., 11. Chris Madden, 12. Steve Francis, 13. Ray Cook, 14. Billy Moyer, 15. Jeep VanWormer, 16. Jason Feger, 17. Jonathan Davenport, 18. Jared Landers, 19. Chub Frank, 20. Shannon Babb, 21. Duane Chamberlain, 22. Josh Richards, 23. Dale McDowell, 24. Randy Korte.

Rain doesn't dampen spirits at Eldora

The rain fell at Eldora Speedway most of the morning and afternoon on Wednesday, June 3, sweeping the Prelude to the Dream down the calendar to September 9.

But even though the charity event putting NASCAR, NHRA and other racing professionals in dirt late models was postponed, it didn’t dampen the spirits of Bill Johnston. The Jefferson Township resident sat at his campground site with his brother and two nephews watching trucks slide through the mud, sharing laughs, stories, chili and a few drinks.

“It’s just a wet day at Eldora, that’s what you come to a dirt track for,” said Johnston. “If the race ain’t going on it’s party time and mud sliding.”

Not long ago Johnston might have duplicated those trucks throwing mud with a belly slide of his own. But Johnston said his dog, a Chihuahua named Diamond, “ain’t big enough to pull me.” Looking at Diamond it wasn’t hard to see who he was rooting for: The nails on two paws were painted orange — the same color Tony Stewart made popular driving the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet. The other two paws were painted pink.

Johnston was sharing the campsite with brother Larry Johnston Sr., his sons Larry Johnston Jr. — both of West Carrollton — and Jason Johnston of Piqua. All were rooting for Stewart, who on this day stayed in Indianapolis to wait out the rain. Though they missed out on the Prelude, they were staying through the weekend to watch the $100,000-to-win Dirt Late Model Dream.

Bill Johnston will also return in September for the Prelude and the World 100. He’s missed just one of the 38 races. That came in 1976 when a son was born.

“(My wife) told me if I wasn’t there while the baby was born to just stay at the race track,” Johnston said, laughing. “But no, she don’t have a problem with me coming up for a week at a time. I’ve had a great time coming up here. And we’ve been through it all, the mud and the storms.”

The campgrounds providing a temporary home to thousands of other racing fans were unusually quiet Wednesday. A few games of corn hole broke out once the rain slowed to a drizzle, then stopped around 4 p.m. A few others started their campfires, visited the souvenir trailers that remained open or treated themselves to the Race 2 Taste that featured Darke County restaurants. But most retreated to their campers or RVs to get out of the chilly, damp weather.

Eldora Speedway general manager Larry Kemp said they waited as long as they could to try and race, but with the drivers awaiting word in Charlotte, N.C., it had to be postponed.

“We had a tight schedule keeping in touch with the pilots and the guys in Charlotte about what time they would have to leave,” Kemp said. “That time was about 1 p.m. We did extend it a little bit but looking at the radar it was green all the way into Illinois. It’s an unfortunate thing but we’ll try again in September.”

Most racing fans understood the decision, but it will make for a long trip home for some.

“I know Tony was not wanting to cancel it. Tony is probably just as excited about it as everyone else was,” said Roberta Wilber, who took vacation, drove 11 hours one-way from Wisconsin and already knows she has a conflict with the Sept. 9 date. “But still, look at all the people that came from far away and just to come here to shop at his freakin’ tent.”

Jerry Lauer left Pittsburgh, Pa., with friends and family around 9 a.m. and arrived at his hotel at 2 p.m. That’s when he heard the race was postponed. They decided to visit the track anyway.

“We’re just going to walk around and check it out,” said Lauer, also hoping to see a Stewart victory. “We’ve never been here.”

And then there was Ken Walker. The race fan from Halifax, Nova Scotia, was finishing up a trip that started in Orlando, Fla., went to Charlotte, N.C., then Richmond, Va., and finally concluded at Eldora. Along the way there were three rainouts — counting the race-shortened Coca-Cola 600 — a bad starter fixed among the puddles in a Wal-Mart parking lot, a faulty RV bathroom and that muddy hole the RV’s back tire was resting in.

“I haven’t even seen the track. … I’ve read about it in magazines, things like that, and I knew it was a good track and had a good reputation so we came down to see her,” Walker said. “But the rain got us. Now the mud man got us. We’re stuck here. We may be here until October.”

Walker won’t be able to return in September, but he was sticking around for the Dream on Friday and Saturday.

“We’ll see something hopefully on Friday and Saturday. We’re staying here until Sunday, or possibly October,” Walker said. “We try hard to have a good time. We’d drink harder too if we could find a drink around this place. We’re going to lay low. We expected that. It’s not the hub of anything except a dirt track.”

The wine from the Winery at Versailles was flowing at Eldora’s multi-purpose building. The Race 2 Taste featuring restaurants from Darke County had about 1,000 people stop by said Deanna York, the executive director of the Darke County Visitors Bureau.

“The crowd has been wonderful for us,” she said.

And the favorite crowd pleaser?

“The barbeque ribs from Michael Anthony’s at the Inn are very good,” York said.

This just in from Eldora Speedway: Persistent rain has forced officials at Eldora Speedway to postpone the fifth annual Prelude to the Dream. The all-star dirt late model race has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9. A decision regarding the broadcast of the event will be made at a later date.

The wet weather made it impossible to run the event that was slated to benefit four military-themed charities - Wounded Warrior Project, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Operation Homefront and Fisher House.

“We worked really hard to make sure everything was right for the drivers, fans and viewers at home on HBO Pay-Per-View, but the weather was the one element we couldn’t control,” said Tony Stewart, two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and owner of Eldora Speedway.

Those who have already purchased the Prelude to the Dream on HBO Pay-Per-View, which was slated to begin today at 7 p.m. EDT, will be refunded.

Those who purchased a ticket to the event can apply the value of their Prelude to the Dream ticket toward any remaining event on the 2009 Eldora Speedway schedule. To view the schedule, please visit www.EldoraSpeedway.com http://www.eldoraspeedway.com/ or call the track office (937) 338-3815.

ROSSBURG — There’s little give and take when the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers challenge for position on the weekends. But when it comes to the Prelude to the Dream on Wednesday, June 3, it’s all about giving.

For many of the 26 drivers — ranging from the Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series, NHRA to a few other professionals in the business — the Prelude is a chance to have a little fun and raise a lot of money. This year’s charity race benefits four military-themed organizations: Wounded Warrior Project, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Operation Homefront and Fisher House.

“The thing about soldiers in the military is they are some of the toughest people I have ever met,” said Eldora owner and two-time Prelude champion Tony Stewart. “There are people who have lost arms and legs and all they want to do is get healed up and get back to service. All they want to do is serve their country. If nothing else, we as civilians can support the soldiers and the men and women we have who are fighting for us and making sure that we have a nation like we have.”

So as the drivers hit the homestretch at Eldora Speedway, the cause also hits the home front. Several of the Prelude drivers have connections to the U.S. Armed Forces. Three-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson is among them.

“(My grandfather) was in a tank and he didn’t talk much about it. There were a lot of gruesome things he saw and experienced in World War II,” Johnson said. “He was one of the first tanks that busted through the walls at a concentration camp. My other grandfather was in the Navy on an aircraft carrier. I certainly have history with my family being in the Armed Forces. My wife’s brother is in the Navy as well. My brother-in-law is going through the steps to hopefully become a SEAL someday. It’s all around us.”

Other drivers have special connections as well:

• Cup driver Ryan Newman drives the U.S. Army-sponsored No. 39 Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing. “This is the first year with the U.S. Army on my chest and to know that there are a million soldiers out there fighting for our freedom and to have recognition for the ones who have been injured, it is really special.”

• NASCAR driver Aric Almirola also spent time in the U.S. Army Chevrolet in 2008 and used the experience to meet servicemen and servicewomen. “It was a big honor for me to be able to meet people who have fought for our country. … Hopefully we can raise a lot of money for the wounded soldiers and their families. That’s real important to me and it should be real important to everybody. A lot of times we take it for granted.”

• Cup driver Kevin Harvick’s paint schemes have included the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Coast Guard and a tribute to Sept. 11. “For us it’s pretty cool because we get to deal with that on weekly basis with our VFW sponsorship. We went to Walter Reed just to see some of the guys. Obviously it’s a very important cause for where our country is right now and all the guys ask for is support. … Most of the guys who have been hurt want to get better so they can serve again. It’s hard to believe but the enthusiasm those guys have that have been hurt is really remarkable.”

• Cup driver Brian Vickers has a friend overseas. “One of my close friends growing up is over in, I don’t know where he is because he couldn’t tell me before he left. I’m definitely thinking of him and wishing him the best. I hope he comes home safe and I appreciate what he’s doing.”

• Cup driver David Reutimann works with the Wounded Warriors Project through his sponsorship with Aaron’s Dream Machine. “Trying to help the soldiers, I think that’s something we take for granted and we all should try to do more of.”

• And perhaps NASCAR driver and former Prelude champ Kenny Wallace put it best. “We owe it to the fallen heroes to pack the grandstand. Do everything you can to get there. When you buy a ticket to the Dream it means you are supporting people who were killed in action. It can’t get any stronger than that.”

The four charities serve severely injured military personnel or fallen heroes and their families and can be found on the internet at:

• www.WoundedWarriorProject.org: To raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members.

• www.FallenHeroesFund.org: To support severely wounded military personnel and veterans, ensuring that those who sacrifice for our nation receive the best care possible. These efforts are funded entirely with donations from the public.

• www.OperationHomefront.net: To provide emergency assistance and morale to the troops, to the families they leave behind, and to wounded warriors when they return home.

• www.FisherHouse.org: To provide “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There are 40 Fisher Houses located on 18 military installations and 10 VA medical centers. Three more are under construction.

More recipes from Jeg’s NHRA Drag Racing Team chef Nicky Morse:

I have always loved a good breakfast. I have never been a big fan of rolled oats, except in cookies. I don’t know how I have missed out for so long, but I was introduced to steel cut oats this year. Wow- what a difference they make. The texture is much firmer and more filling than rolled oats.

There is a lady in my hometown of London, Ohio named Geraldine Henry. I try to visit her when I go back. I have to tell you that she is a wonderful person. She turned 96 this year and you would never know it. (Sorry Geraldine- I know I m not supposed to ask your age, but I think that I am allowed to tell your age???) I love to play jokes on her. I remember the time I heard that she had been to the dentist. I called her the next day disguising my voice and acting like I was the dental assistant. I told her that she had to come into the office immediately to have all of her teeth removed. I took her to the point of a small argument before I told her who was really calling. She threatened to tell my mother. Another time we were sitting in her kitchen chatting when someone came to the front door. I could tell that the person was going to come into the kitchen with Geraldine, so I had to act quickly. I had a deck of cards in my pocket, so I decided to deal some out on the table like were playing poker. I also threw a bunch of money in the middle of the table so it looked like we were gambling. As they came into the room, I told Geraldine that it was her turn. I wish that you could have seen their faces. It was priceless.

Geraldine and I don’t always have the same style of cooking, but we do share ideas and cooking tips. A couple years ago, she told me about broiling a grapefruit half covered with sugar. I had never thought about that, but I did like the idea. I thought that the grapefruit would be a great accompaniment to this dish along with the pear and banana slices. I left the nuts and blackberries in their natural form for this recipe because that is the way I like them with oatmeal. You can toast the nuts if you like.

I would like to dedicate this recipe to Geraldine and thank her for friendship.

Morning Oats with Glazed Fruit
(Makes 1 Serving)

Oatmeal Ingredients:
1 Cup Water
¼ Cup Steel Cut Oats
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1 Tablespoon Maple Syrup

Oatmeal Procedure:

Boil the water in a thick bottom pot.
Sprinkle the steel cut oats into the boiling water and stir.
Bring the oats to a boil.
Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook the oats uncovered until desired texture, stirring occasionally. (Approximately 30 minutes)
Stir in the cinnamon and maple syrup and put the oatmeal in a warm bowl.

Fruit Ingredients:
3 Slices Pear (Fresh)
3 Segments Grapefruit
3 Slices Banana
3 Each Blackberries
4 Each Almonds (Whole)
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
½ Teaspoon Cinnamon
As Needed Food Release Spray

Fruit Procedure:
Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle it on the grapefruit segments, banana slices, and pear slices. (I do not cook the blackberries or nuts for this recipe.)
Place the sugared fruit on a pre greased baking dish lined with foil. (The foil helps with easy clean up if some of the sugar burns.
Broil the fruit on high until golden brown.
Arrange the fruit and nuts on the oatmeal. (Use a fork or a flat spatula to pick up the cooked fruit because it will be delicate and break easily.)
    Enjoy!
