Absinthe returns to the States … legally!?!
Don’t call it a comeback, it’s been here for years. Yes, Absinthe is back - but not to Ohio. Right now it’s in cities like New York, California, Chicago and the like. The brand is Lucid Absinthe Superieure and the makers are hoping the buzz it generates on it’s return after having been unavailable for purchase for the last 95 years will help propel it forward.
Distilled from fennel and anise, the greenish colored liquid has the taste of black licorice which I’m guessing will not propel it forward. Originally absinthe was also distilled with a third herb — wormwood — which was the reason it was outlawed for 95 years. Remember the “green fairy” hallucinations in “Moulin Rouge?” And speaking of that film, are you a fan? But I digress, the latest absinthe products contains so little of it that the government considers it safe. Check out this article on it which goes on to say that, “three other absinthe products have been approved for distribution in the near future, one called Green Moon and two other labels from Kubler, a Swiss company.” So, have you ever tasted absinthe? What do you think? I have and it was OK, not a favorite … probably something I would order if it came to Ohio once or twice just to do it. With such strong flavors it’s pretty overpowering, but that’s just me. What do you think? Would you want to try it or could you care less?
