Those crazy prohibition-era laws
Our colleague Mark Fisher writes on a recent wine blog about states with crazier laws on the books than ours … the culprit? Virginia where it is against the law to mix wine and spirits. In fact, a Mexican restaurant was recently cited for making Sangria. Some of the best cocktails out there are made with blends that feature, Champagne, sparkling wine and different wines with a spirited concoction - what can they be thinking?!?!! Go here to read his very entertaining blog entry. And if you’re looking for a good recipe page to get ideas on how best to break the law in Virginia, going wild and mixing those crazy spirits with that wacky wine (GASP!), we happened on a Web page we liked that had some good ideas … My favorite would be a Kir Royale. It’s easy, impressive and tastes fantastic. Sparkling wine mixed with a 1/2 ounce of creme de cassis (black currant liqueur). It mentions that you could also opt for Chambord (a raspberry liqueur). I would additionally offer up using apricot liqueur in a Kir concoction, which is a refreshing summer combination. Now that I’ve shared mine, what’s your favorite wine, sparkling wine or Champagne-based cocktail?

Happy International Delete Your MySpace Page Day
This according to a post on truemors.com: “A blogger frustrated by glitches, invitations from meth-faced girls with webcams, and bedazzled pages resembling a Liberace disaster has declared January 30 “ International Delete Your MySpace Page Day. The cause has garnered support from a Facebook group, where an intense debate has MySpacers squaring off against Facebook fiends. MySpace has even taken notice, without showing so much as a tremble, saying, “This Delete-Your-MySpace day is just about being controversial. MySpace is still the world’s biggest social networking site.” The News Corp owned site has a reputation for facing controversy with a smirk, probably because they refuse to disclose the number of actual active users.”
Will anyone out there be killing off a MySpace account to celebrate the day?

Your guide to regional pizza styles
Q: What goes great with beer?
A: Almost everything, but especially pizza.
A recent post on the Web site Serious Eats lists a guide to different regional pizza variations stating that “there are 17 or 18 regional styles happening in the U.S. alone. That’s before you go global. Or before you go into chain-style pizza” … they site styles ranging from the classic New York slice to what they term the “Ohio Valley-Style.”
For the Ohio Valley-Style’s description they quote from the blog Mine Road saying: “The first thing that you’ll notice that is odd about our favorite pizza is that it’s square. Square as in it’s made in a square pan and then cut into square pieces. Then you’ll notice that the cheese isn’t melted all the way. The uncooked toppings are put on after the sauce, base cheese (minimal), and dough are cooked. You always have to make sure to have a slice ASAP before everything melts on the drive/walk back to your place. You’ll also notice that our pizza sauce isn’t really much of a sauce at all as much as it is just stewed tomatoes. Also the crust is a mix between a deep dish and thin crust. It is very much focaccia bread, if you’ve ever had that. Oh, and the best part is that you buy it by the slice.”
Hmmmm …. don’t know that the Ohio Valley-Style description works completely for me, especially the focaccia bread description … thoughts? Here’s the link to the full skinny on these specialty slices.
And while we’re on the subject, here’s video of a Japanese pizza commercial that cracked me up. Just imagine what this regional pizza description must be like …

Rascal Flatts Nutter Center date sells out
Live Nation has announced that tickets for the Rascal Flatts show at the Ervin J. Nutter Center Feb. 17 are sold out. The popular country group featuring Columbus natives Jay Demarcus and Gary Levox, released its fifth CD “Still Feels Good,” on Sept. 25 last year. Depending on the configuration of a show at the Nutter Center a typical sell-out would be between 10,500 and 11,000 tickets according to Misty Cox, Marketing Manager for the Nutter Center. She went on to say that this concert will be “wall-to-wall” people. Due to heavy traffic the Nutter Center is encouraging fans to arrive early and carpool with others. Doors will open at approximately 6:30 p.m. There are approximately 30 single seats available for purchase at this time according to Cox.

Two beers for the calories of one
Miller Brewing Co. is set to roll out MGD 64 in regional markets according to Adagecom. The online site reports the company tested the product late year in the Wisconsin market and results were strong enough to roll out to other midwestern states in early March.
MGD 64 is targeted at female beer consumers and is hoping to reclaim market share from Michelob Ultra, Bud Light and Coors light. The Web site reports Chief Marketing Officer Randy Ransom as saying, “It has the lowest calories out there and still tastes like beer.”
Photo - adage.com
The tagline that was used in the test markets “As light as it gets,” was well received by consumers and is likely to be seen in ads near health clubs.
You should be able to find MGD 64 in stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, North Dakota and South Dakota in early March.
Miller is the same company who brought us Chill, (In my opinion - one of the worst beers ever!). So when Miller says it “still tastes like beer” I’m skeptical.
Is it possible it will still taste like beer? Really?

Things you should never say to a woman
An article I just finished reading by one Jessica Murphy on msn.com points out the obvious … that some comments are better left unsaid.
It goes on to list the 10 things that most women don’t want to hear. Drum roll please …
“What did you do to your hair?”
“They both look the same to me.”
“Relax.”
“I’ve got it all under control.”
“You’re not one of those feminists, are you?”
“When are you due?”
“You’re being emotional.”
“You’re acting just like your mother/my mother/my ex-girlfriend.”
“You complete me.”
“Do you really think you should be eating that?”
Here’s the link if you like, but the thing is, I think several of these are off mark (I’d rather hear you complete me than lots of other things) and this list is the tip of the iceberg. What would you add/take away? Men, feel free to participate. What are the things that drive your lady friend up the wall?

That beer is how much?
A post of the three most expensive beers according to a blog dedicated to unusual items (www.dailycognition.com) puts a beer called Vielle Bon Secours which can only be found at a London bar called the Bierdrome (don’t you love that name?) at No. 1 with a whopping price tag of about $1,000 (whatever the exchange rate is on that particular day for 500 pounds). A “Dread Pirate Roberts” who posted to the blog entry provides the following mathematical formula:
$1,000.00 a bottle = 66 cases of 30 paks @ $14.99 = 1980 CANS / 66 cases of 20 longnecks = 1320
He has a point, don’t you think? Another expensive item I recently came across is El Paso’s Don Lunas Grand Reserve Tequila, a limited edition run that will set you back $2,500 a bottle as compared to the Dos Lunas Reposado, which won a gold medal at the International Review of Spirits competition in Chicago, for $49.99. This pricey tag has a variety of factors at play: it’s been aged more than 10 years, is pure blue agave Tequila and comes from the personal stock of a distiller based near Guadalajara. The bottles are numbered and arrive in hand blown Crystal that comes inside locking wood boxes accompanied by a sterling silver necklace and two keys. Take heart: if you’re on a budget you can always order a shot for a scant $100.

Each beer flight features 4 - 4oz pours ($5) ranging from light to dark offered in three different groupings. One grouping Chappy’s is offering includes its seasonal beers on tap. Also available are a grouping of Pales and Lagers as well as a dark beer assortment.
According to our server, Chappy’s has been doing this for about a month or so. What a great way to experiment with new beers!

Oops, we missed hot buttered rum day
I’m not sure how we missed it but, January 17th was National Hot Buttered Rum Day. I’ve dug around and can’t seem to find anything that clarifies when it received “National” status. However, since several web sites are reporting it - it must be true (I’m joking).
Nonetheless, It’s bleeping cold outside so a hot buttered rum could be warming.
Here’s a recipe:
2 cubes of sugar 1 3/4 oz. dark rum Boiling water for topping Butter
Put the sugar cubes in a glass, put a teaspoon or glass stirrer in the glass, add rum and top with boiling water. Dot the surface with butter and stir gently.

Britney Spears death watch?
Usmagazine.com is reporting that within the past month the Associated Press began preparing Britney Spears’ obituary.
“We are not wishing it, but if Britney passed away, it’s easily one of the biggest stories in a long time,” AP entertainment editor Jesse Washington tells Us Magazine.
“I think one would agree that Britney seems at risk right now,” Washington adds. “Of course, we would never wish any type of misfortune on anybody and hope that we would never have to use it until 50 years from now but if something were to happen, we would have to be prepared.”
Washington also says the AP has a “pretty extensive obituary operation,” and that staffers are “constantly adding people” according to Usmagazine.com.
Seems like 26 is kind of young for an obit, but then reflecting on her illustrious career it makes sense. Between this and the news that Lindsay Lohan has been ordered to work at a morgue as part of her DUI sentence, it’s been a weird day in celebrity land ….

It’s okay to pick your nose
The Lounge Lizards prefer glassware for their beverages of choice. But, a find over the holiday season might have us rethinking that idea - especially if you’re looking to add some fun to your next party. And yes, your party guests will be picking their noses and loving it.

Is “Cloverfield” this year’s “Snakes on a Plane?”
I’m on the fence on this one, but the “New York Post” seems to think so. They’ve published the seven deadly signs surrounded by red flags that movie fans might think twice about buying a ticket to see “Cloverfield” this Friday. Here are the reasons they give that this film could be a monster of a disappointment:
1. It has no stars and an unknown director.
2. The budget is tiny.
3. It’s coming out now. (translation: January is a traditional dumping ground)
4. No one has seen it.
5. J.J. Abrams isn’t directing.
6. It was made to fast.
7. Interest is being driven by hype, not the film.
It’s No. 7 that really has a lot of “Snakes on a Plane” parallels for me. There was a good article from the New York Daily News that talks about how the filmmakers and Paramount Pictures kept production under wraps, only leaving cryptic bread crumbs for rabid fanboys to gobble up about this cinematic mash up between “The Blair Witch Project” and “Godzilla”.
I think the fanboy contingent will be enough to give the $30 million dollar “Cloverfield” a respectable opening weekend, but I also won’t be surprised if it suffers the same fate as Samuel L. Jackson and those deadly vipers did. So, weigh in. Will this be a hit or a miss? Will you be buying a ticket this weekend?
If you’re on the fence, here are 22 new production stills from “Cloverfield” to look over as well as a more recent trailer - that may help you make up your mind.

The six worst food trends of 2007
The editors at Epicurious.com have put together a list of the six worst food trends of 2007. And they are (drum roll please) … Macho fast food, vanity vodkas, the ubiquitous $40 entree, hot spots you can’t find (doesn’t really apply to Dayton), truffles the size of a softball, restaurants in “preview.”
Go here to read more about the reasons behind their choices, but it raises a more interesting question … What do you think - after eating out during the year 2007 - the worst trends, fads and movements have been in Dayton’s dining scene? I’ll start: servers with headsets, menus that operate on the theory that bigger is better, no substitutions and menus that try to be everything to everyone. What do you think?

Ever heard of a meat house? Me neither
I’m gagging a little as I type this …. Apparently inspired by the Gingerbread house phenomenon that happens in December, three guys decided to create a meat house. Click here to see photos of it because mere words cannot do it justice. And be sure to scroll down to see it cooked and being eaten. It made me a little nauseous and yet I laughed at the same time. While we’re on the subject, what are the strangest food creations you’ve eaten or seen?

These YouTube videos are impressive examples of just what can happen if you find yourself in the unique situation of having too much time on your hands. If you’re not familiar with the rules of Beer Pong that’s probably because you’ve been out of college for ten years or more. If you need a refresher course, click here for the official beerpong.com site. The quick explanation is you’re trying to get a ping pong ball into a glass filled with beer. And the Lounge Lizards always out to protect and inform are telling you, you do not ever want to play against these guys. Watch these videos, but we warn you: prepare to be amazed …
Seen any good YouTube videos lately? Do tell ….

Our Champagne chair entry
We blogged earlier about the furniture company Design Within Reach (think clean, simple reproductions of mid-century modern classics that have been authorized by the original license holders) holding a Champagne Chair Contest for folks to use their right brain and create an original miniature chair using only the foil, label, cage and cork from no more than two Champagne bottles. And the Lizards thinking it would be easy and fun, decided we should enter. What seemed like a quick project turned into a grueling creative task spread over several hours, with breaks to sip our respective cocktails. What we found was this: It’s very, very hard to create miniature chairs and has given us a greater appreciation of doll house furniture. It was a good use of the trash left over from New Years. It was, as we had imagined, entertaining. Here’s what we came up with - from the beginning:
Tools at the ready and 30 minutes set aside, the Lounge Lizards set about on their trek to create the perfect - award winning chair.
More tools will help create the winning chair, right?
After more than an hour this is what the Lounge Lizards had to show for their efforts.

Time to start with the remaining ingredients.
Several cocktails later - the Lounge Lizards arrive at their inspired design…

And the winning entry (as photographed in our makeshift studio).

We have called it the “Spark Chair” and here was the blurb we sent along with it: “Inspired by the inscription “Spark” on the top of the Champagne cork and by the Apollo moon program we designed a chair perfect for the space age of design. The base is reminiscent of the lunar module. One sit in this seat and you’ll be saying “lift off.”
Cheers!

ROAD TRIP: Nicky Blaines awaits
Not surprisingly, there are several sites out there dedicated to the world’s best bars. Places like Baobab in Santiago, Chile that sound exotic because they are. But for those Lounge Lizards like us that won’t be purchasing tickets out of the country anytime soon, there are bars that are only a road trip away worth visiting. On of my favorite bars from my travels last year is a gem nestled in the bottom floor of a building in downtown Indianapolis called Nicky Blaines (20 N. Meridian St. Indianapolis, IN 46204. (317) 638-5588). Voted one of America’s Best Bar’s by Esquire Magazine … here’s what they had to say about it:
“Sitting at Nicky Blaine’s is like inhabiting a Damon Runyon sentence: dated, but at the same time eternal and full of attitude. The place is a joint, an experience that asserts something inarguable about ducking off a city street for a quick smoke and two fingers of vodka. People will always need the comfort of a basement bar where the bartenders are attentive, the barstools succoring, and the lights, well, the lights transform everything. The women look sumptuous, fleshy, and flush; the men seem to stand taller, faces stripped of weariness and pretension. At Nicky Blaine’s, everyone is sexy and full-blooded. I don’t know if it’s the wall sconces or the table lamps or the bar up lights or the candles here and there, but I am always struck by the fact that people there look the way they do in great paintings-elegant, a little sad sometimes, centered in the middle of the small gestures that make us human. Yes, there are cigars to be had, plates of cheese to be lingered over, couches and armchairs and the warm wrap of red velvet and a regular jazz quartet. Sure, you can order what you want, and it will be better than you have a right to respect. But you’ll sit to have a look, to absorb the visual comfort of a bar so thoughtfully lit.”
This is a bar you don’t ever forget. The bill at the end of the evening was somewhat steep, but it was a rare treat and proved itself worth the added expense. Should you find yourself in the neighborhood, this would be one worth seeking out. Go here for more information. If you’ve discovered any new watering holes worth telling folks about - near or far - share them here. Cheers!

Listen to this: The year in music
The fine folks at Neilsen Broadcast Data Systems have just released the following tidbits about the year in music and I for one found them interesting and therefore worth sharing. The quick summary is that U.S. music purchases exceeded 1.4 billion in the year 2007 and that growth In overall music purchases exceeded 14%, with digital music accounting for 23% of music purchases. If that’s not a bar talk item, I don’t know what is. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg … here’s some highlights of what the report had to say:
2007 Year End Music Factoids:
Music purchases in 2007 reached 1.4 Billion, the third consecutive year music sales have exceeded 1 billion; 1.2 billion (2006) vs. 1 billion (2005) .
Music sales exceeded 58.4 million in the final week of 2007, representing the biggest sales week in the history of Nielsen SoundScan. The previous record was Christmas week 2006 with 47.4 million music purchases.
Overall Album sales (including Albums and Track Equivalent Album sales) declined 9.5% compared to 2006.
Total album sales declined 15% compared to 2006.
Consistent with the previous three years, 20% of total album sales occurred during the Holiday Season (last 6 weeks of year).
Digital Factoids:
More than 840 million digital tracks were purchased during 2007; an increase of 45% over 2006.
Digital album sales reached the 50 million for 2007; up 53% over the previous year and accounted for 10% of total album sales compared to 5.5% in 2006.
In the final reporting week of 2007 the following sales records were broken:
Digital track sales surpassed 42.9 million. The previous sales record was 30.1 million, week of 12/24 -12/31/06.
Digital album sales this week fell just shy of the two million mark with sales of 1,920,000 sales; breaking the previous record of 1.2 million (12/31/06) .
Flo Rida’s track “Low feat. T-Pain” set the mark for the biggest selling week for an individual Digital Track, with sales of 467,000 (previous record was Rihanna’s “Umbrella at 276,000 sales). Note that Chris Brown’s “Kiss Kiss” track sold 277,000 downloads which also broke the previous record held by Rihanna.
The first time a digital song (combining all versions of the same song) sold more than 300,000 downloads in a week. Flo Rida’s song “Low feat. T-Pain” is the new record holder for biggest selling week for a Digital Song with sales of 467,000 this week. Fergie’s “Fergalicious” held the previous record with sales of 295,000. Timbaland’s digital song “Apologize” also broke the previous record with sales of 319,000 this week.
In 2007, there were 9 different digital songs with sales that exceeded 2 million compared to one in 2006 (“Bad Day” by Daniel Powter - 2,015,000).
41 Digital Songs exceeded the 1 million sales mark for the year compared to 22 digital songs in 2006 and only 2 digital songs in 2005.
Fergie was the biggest selling digital artist in 2007 with 7.5 million track sales.
There were more than 390,000 different physical albums that sold at least one copy over the Internet during 2007.
Physical Internet album sales reached a new record high with sales of of 30.1 million unit sales; an increase of 2% over 2006 year-end total (29.1).
Best Seller Factoids:
Josh Groban was the biggest selling solo artist, with sales greater than 4.8 million albums and the Eagles were the biggest selling group in 2007 with sales of 3.6 million.
Josh Groban’s Noel was the biggest selling album of the year with 3.7 million sales. It’s the first time in the history of Nielsen SoundScan that a “seasonal/holiday” album held the top position on the year-end chart. Noel is also the first “seasonal/holiday” album to sell more than 3 million units in a year. The previous high for a “seasonal/holiday” album for a year was Kenny G’s Miracles: A Holiday Album back in 1994 which sold 2,986,000 copies.
Strata Factoids:
Album sales at Non-Traditional music outlets experienced significant growth with sales approaching the 90 million mark. Non-traditional outlets accounted for 18% of all album sales, compared to 12% in 2006, 9% in 2005 and 5% in 2004 (4% in 2003).
40% of all albums purchased were at a Mass Merchant outlet compared to 41% in 2006, 40% in 2005 and 38% in 2004 (35% in 2003 and 34% in 2002).
Chain music stores for the first time accounted for less than 40% of all album sales; 36% compared to 41% in 2006, 45% in 2005 and 48% in 2004.
Album sales at Independent music stores remained consistant from a year ago; accounting for 6% of all album sales (7% in 2005 and 9% in 2004).
Nielsen RingScan Factoids:
There were 220 million ringtone purchases in 2007 resulting in sales of $567 million.
During the last week of the year (Christmas week), ringtone purchases increased by 22% over the previous week (consistent with sales spike during the last week of 2006).

Vodka kills 11 - Injures 20
When Lounge Lizards belly up to the bar for a cocktail one usually knows what to expect… hopefully a refreshing libation… but for party revelers in Mongolia, they got more than they bargained for.
The BBC is reporting “At least 11 people have died and more than 20 have been hospitalised after drinking vodka containing industrial alcohol in Mongolia.” Officials are saying the vodka contained methanol spirits used as a cleaning agent.
Yikes… how would you know until it’s too late?

Summing up the year that was 2007
Jib Jab has gone and done it again …. a video of the year 2007 in review done to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Any thoughts on the year that was or the year that will be? We’d be interested in hearing them. At any rate, this is a fine way to start 2008 … enjoy!
