Woodford Releases 2009 KY Derby Bottle in Ohio

Woodford Reserve, an award-winning small-batch bourbon made in Kentucky, has released a limited edition 2009 Kentucky Derby bottle featuring artwork by retired jockey Tom Chapman to honor the country’s favorite horse race.

“Much as we try, it’s impossible to express in words the intensity of racing from a jockey’s perspective,” said artist Tom Chapman. “My goal is to capture it with a paint brush and canvas, often using unique angles and vibrant colors to set the tone. But no painting can truly capture the vibrancy and intensity of the Kentucky Derby.”

The striking image by Chapman, which you can see below, is a vibrant, intense picture illustrating two jockeys racing neck-and-neck with the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs tucked neatly into the background. The artist’s signature adorns the neck band of the bottle, and an attached tag bears information about the artist and product. The limited edition liter-size bottle is available across the country in 38 states including Ohio.

“Woodford Reserve is honored to partner with an artist who can capture the sport from a jockey’s viewpoint,” said Laura Petry, Woodford Reserve brand manager. “As the signature bourbon of thoroughbred racing, we are proud to continue our partnership with Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.”

Alcohol-flavored popcorn??

There is a new food product out there that caught our attention … Pub-Corn. Alcohol-flavored popcorn (with no alcohol content) comes in Beer, Pina Colada and Irish Cream flavors. The Pub-Corn Web site reports that, “Our research and development team is testing new flavors daily. Individuals can sign up for new flavor alerts at www.Pub-Corn.com. Anyone who would like to request a specific flavor can e-mail flavors@Pub-Corn.com.”

We got a chance to sample all three flavors of Pub-Corn here in the office and the Irish Cream is just plain awful and I wasn’t the only one gagging over the lingering aftertaste. The Pina Colada and beer flavors, while edible, weren’t anything to write home about. The beer flavor tastes nothing like beer which kind of defeats the purpose of eating “Pub-Corn.”

Here’s a clip of a TODAY show segment featuring Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb sampling Pub-Corn. My thoughts on watching — I can not believe that both gave a thumbs up to the Irish Cream flavored popcorn. Were they really eating the same stuff we were?

For those interested, Pub-Corn can be purchased on the company’s Web site, although we would recommend you save your money for something you’re actually going to enjoy eating. This product does bring a question to mind: Is there any food item you think would work with alcohol flavoring? Anyone have any thoughts? I really like Orbit’s mojito gum but overall I don’t think alcohol translates well as a laboratory created flavor. The fact that “medium chain triglycerides” are listed as an ingredient should have been my first clue …

Beer contributes $7 billion to Ohio economy according to new study

$7 billion dollars? Yes, if you believe a new economic impact study conducted by John Dunham & Associates based in New York City using data compiled in 2008.

The study, commissioned by the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) and the Beer Institute, says that America’s beer industry — made up of brewers, beer importers, beer distributors, brewer suppliers, and retailers — directly and indirectly contributes $7,766,080,145 annually to Ohio’s economy.

According to the study, the beer industry directly employs 42,998 people in Ohio, paying them $1,040,705,143 in wages. The 99 beer distributors in Ohio employ 3,864 people. Large and small brewers and beer importers employ approximately 1,829 people. Beer sales help support roughly 37,305 jobs at licensed retailers, which include supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants, bars, stadiums and other outlets.

“America’s brewing industry continues to play a pivotal role in supporting this nation’s economic viability,” said Tom Long, president and chief commercial officer of MillerCoors, and chairman of the Beer Institute. “Brewers in Ohio have been a driving force in their communities for years by creating jobs and tax revenue for public services, and promoting alcohol awareness responsibility initiatives for retailers, schools, and families.”

The complete study, including state-by-state and congressional district breakdowns of economic contributions, is available at Beer Serves America, www.BeerServesAmerica.org

DPO launches “Motown Idol” search at Therapy Cafe

Are you of the opinion that “American Idol” winners (and runner-ups) have nothing on your vocal stylings and range? Are you looking for a chance to showcase your vocal chops? Have you always wished for a venue to showcase your deep love of Motown? If the answer is yes to any or all of these then reserve April 23 on your calendar right now.

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that it is teaming up with Therapy Cafe for a Thursday, April 23 karaoke party as part of a regional “Motown Idol” search. They are encouraging Southwest Ohioans to join Neal Gittleman and friends at Therapy Café for an evening of “Motown Idol.”

The Cliff Notes version of this is that twelve semi-finalists will be chosen on April 23 to audition for The Contours on May 7; six finalists will audition at concerts on May 8 and 9 with one winner each night to perform with The Contours and the DPO.

ContoursWeb.jpg
THE CONTOURS

If you want the who, what, where and why in detail, here’s what the DPO press release has to say:

“In celebration of The Contours’ upcoming visit to Dayton and their performance at the National City SuperPops Series, the Dayton Philharmonic has announced Motown Idol, a regional search to locate two of the best R&B singers in the Southwest Ohio region. Ultimately, two winners will perform a Motown classic tune on stage with The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts and the full Dayton Philharmonic; one winner to perform on Friday night, May 8 and one on Saturday night, May 9.

The search starts with a karaoke performance contest and party at Therapy Cafe, 452 East Third Street on Thursday, April 23. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the registration to compete starts at 6 p.m. with the competition to commence around 8 p.m. Those wishing to audition should plan to arrive early. Only solo singers will be considered. Popular LITE 99.9 midday radio host Ryan Phillips will emcee. Dwaine Wheeler, Therapy Cafe’s Music Director and Nancy Sell of Nancy’s Karaoke will guide this entertaining event. There will be no cost to participate in the contest and no cover charge that evening at the popular Dayton nightclub. The evening’s auditions will be captured on video, and highlights will be posted on YouTube.

DPO Music Director Neal Gittleman will head a local judging panel tasked with winnowing the evening’s contestants down to 12 semi-finalists. Therapy Cafe is open until 2 a.m., concluding this first round of Motown Idol. The twelve singers will then return to Therapy Cafe on Thursday, May 7 for a second event, auditioning for The Contours themselves, again in a karaoke setting. The storied Motown artists will select six semi-finalists. The six semi-finalists will be announced on WDTN-TV2 at noon the following day, May 8. Two teams will be revealed: three singers to appear on stage Friday night and three on Saturday night.

All six finalists will rehearse with The Contours and the DPO early Friday, May 8th. Each concert evening, one of the teams will appear at the beginning of the concert to perform for that evening’s SuperPops audience. Each singer will take a verse with The Contours’ Music Director Glen Raby at keyboard. The audience will be provided with ballots in their program books and will cast them for their favorites at intermission. During the second half, the ballots will be tallied backstage, and that night’s winner will perform “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” with The Contours at the conclusion of the show. Those interested in competing should know that The Contours and the DPO will perform the famous Marvin Gaye hit in E minor.”

Craft brewing war set to pour into theaters

On Thursday, April 16, more than 430 movie theaters across the country will participate in one-night event that promises to, “take audiences nationwide inside the billion dollar brewing business and reveal the truth behind the labels of your favorite beer.”

The “Beer Wars Live” event will begin at 8 p.m. with a showing of the documentary “Beer Wars.” A live panel discussion simulcast from Los Angeles, featuring independent brewers and beer industry experts, will immediately follow the film.

The live discussion, hosted by Ben Stein, will include Anat Baron(“Beer Wars” director, producer and writer), Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head Craft Brewery founder and CEO who is featured in the film), Rhonda Kallman (Founder and CEO of New Century Brewing Company and co-founder of Boston Beer Company, makers of Samuel Adams who is also featured in the film), Greg Koch (Stone Brewing Company founder), Charlie Papazian (Brewers Association president), Maureen Ogle (Beer historian and author of “Ambitious Brew: The Story of American Beer”) and Todd Alstrom (BeerAdvocate founder).

Sadly, free beer is not included when the “Beer Wars Live” event pours into theaters. Still, with an estimated more than 95 million beer drinkers in the States, this story of small, independent brewers trying to find footing in an increasingly complicated corporate landscape and the struggles that ensue should be of interest — especially to craft beer lovers.

Regal Cinema at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek is the only local theater that will be showing “Beer Wars Live.” Tickets for the event are available at Regal’s box office and at www.FathomEvents.com. For a complete list of theater locations, click here.

Check out the trailer below:

Whether you go or not, you still may be interested in some of these facts and figures we found on the beerwarsmovie.com Web site:

Eighty percent of the beer made in the United States is now controlled by two companies, one based in Belgium and one in South Africa.

The top American owned brewer is Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams).

On average, every American now lives within 10 miles of a brewery.

Beer is the second most popular beverage in the world, coming in behind tea.

Beer is sometimes referred to as “liquid bread” because brewer’s yeast is a rich source of nutrients. Beer can contain magnesium, selenium, potassium, phosphorus, biotin and B vitamins.

Beer is one of the most regulated industries in America with over 37,000 beer laws.

The United States is the only country in the world with a three tier system for alcohol distribution.

Directly and indirectly, the beer industry employs approximately 1.7 million Americans, paying them almost $55 billion in wages and benefits.

In 2006, the beer industry recorded 2.2% growth, hitting an all-time record of over 210 million barrels of beer.

Local group organizes tour of Bourbon Country

If you’ve not been to America’s Bourbon country, this could be a fun way to go.

The WSU Alumni Association is plannning a two-day Kentucky Bourbon Tour - April 24 & 25, 2009.

A couple of years ago, I made the pilgrimage to the land of Bourbon and took the self-guided version of the tour along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, but a guided tour with a group of friends would have been a hoot!

The distilleries on the tour list include Heaven Hill, Maker’s Mark, Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve (my personal favorite).

You don’t have to be an alumni to go on the tour.

More information is available by calling Mary Johnson at (937) 775 3659 or by checking out the WSU Alumni Web site.

If you go be sure to tell us all about it!
