Newest Oregon District club opens Friday
Pulse Nightclub will join the ranks of Oregon District night spots this Friday, March 11, with a grand opening party starting at 8 p.m.
If you want to be one of the first to check out the newly remodeled club, formerly home to Sloopy’s and briefly Bar Tiki, show up Friday ready to dance.
Doors open at 8 p.m. and admission is 21 and up only. There will be a $5 cover charge at the door. Drink specials opening night include $4 grape and cherry bombs, $2 Bud Selects, and the club’s signature cocktail the Pulsation — think along the lines of a “Wall” at Tim’s or a fishbowl at Adobe Gila’s, strong and sweet — for $4.
I got a sneak peek of the club, 613 E. Fifth St., and the place is practically unrecognizable — in a good way!
See for yourself in these sneak peek photos of the new interior.
Besides ripping out the square bar that took up most of the club space — the new bar runs along the front wall that faces Fifth Street — Pulse’s designers have removed the raised booths along the wall, expanded the dance floor, and created a ultra-modern interior that is pretty visually stunning.
Vicki Waker of Cabinet Creations Design Gallery and J. Stanton, president of Southpaw Creation and Design, were in charge of the club’s makeover. Stanton completed the interior design at SideBar, also in the Oregon District.
They’ve given Pulse’s lounge a face life that includes faux leather walls and couches and the bathrooms have been completely redone. The back room that used to house pool tables won’t be open for this weekend’s opening, but owner Randy Handler, who also owns George Newcom’s Tavern and Clancy’s Tavern, said it will eventually be some sort of a private party or VIP room.
Although the weather will be chilly, the patio will be open for smokers. Inside the DJ will be playing Top 40, dance hits, and a bit of R&B and hip hop.
If you go for the grand opening smile pretty for our ActiveDayton.com photographer and let us know what you think.

Hi, my name is Pulse. An original name/concept in no city across the country (even as close as Cinci where i live). And, I am going to employ a bunch of cheating losers with no life wich I witnessed when I lived in Dayton. They cheat on their “baby mamas” all the time. Way to extend the cheating possibilities for all the drunk tools.

I will say, and I would never say this normally. I hope this place fails because of who they have running the place. The whole oregon is a joke anymore because the only thing they do is recycle old losers from each bar who naive owners think they can trust. A bit sad for Dayton small business owners like Randy the write off king. The cool thing is if you went to the oregon 10 years ago you will see the same workers. That’s cool right! Welfare and staying single for government benefits are cool everyone!!

Was “Sloppy’s” a typo or a slam?

That is cool they are trying a new place in the district. I look forward to stopping in the one time a year I want to hang out with the hood rats. They are doing so amazing everytime I go there. I love having the dancefloor to myself with 10 trashy guys. Or being hit on by the “manager” who tells me about his baby boy and asks me to sleep with him two minutes later. High class Randy!

I absolutely will not go to the Oregon because of Newcoms. I had bad experience after bad experience there. This new place will kick off fine because of friends. But down the road friends won’t carry a business. You reap what you sow. This place will eventually fail unknowingly to the owner because the folks he has work there have obviously already paved the path of failure.

I hate the oregon as well, and am from Beavercreek. Brown St. is the new “Oregon District” and deservingly so. Thay cater to the clientelle and have evolved, where the oregon has stayed the same. Fire your workers and rebuild, it is funny to see the same faces there I saw at my friends birthday party 12 years ago. We go for a drink and leave right after because the music and atmosphere used to fun but now is terrible at newcoms. Agree, this place will fail because of the recycling. Or they will just get by, which is fine apparently since newcoms has been around so long.

Thanks to Dave and Emily for pointing out what was indeed a typo and not meant to be a dig towards Sloopy’s. As for everyone else’s negative comments, you are entitled to your negative opinions, but please don’t stoop so low as to be racist. Your comment will be erased.

The one person getting on here with different names talking s**t needs to get a life. You are pathetic. With that being said this place will do well. It’s a nice place and offers something that no one else in Dayton does.

I must not have been at the same club Sat. night as the other reviewers. I found it to be an upscale, upbeat experience which was a refreshing change from other nite spots in Dayton. The negative comments were addressed more to the owner and bouncers than the overall experience of the club. I would go back in a heartbeat (no pun intended).

I peeked in Saturday night just to take a look around. This club is absolutely gorgeous; MUCH nicer than any place else I’ve seen in Dayton. A lot of attention was paid to the details. I can’t really comment on what the total Pulse experience would be like. It was early, so there really wasn’t much of a crowd yet. The music is geared toward a younger crowd, but the VIP area would provide a comfortable atmosphere for more mature customers to meet for cocktails. The sound system was decent and the music wasn’t so loud that you have to scream to be heard. My husband and I will probably return to Pulse for a date night. HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Oregon District business owners get together and hire SECURITY for the street, maybe some off duty cops. There are more and more unsavory looking characters hanging out down there and SAFETY is a concern, especially for females.
