No joke: The return of summer beer and a makeover for Hammerjax’s college night
It’s April 1! And although I love a good April Fool’s Day prank, I’m even more excited that today marks the return of Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy!
Only sold April through August, this summer treat hits shelves starting today in cans, bottles and on draft.
Brewed by the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company in Chippewa Falls, Wis., Summer Shandy is a blend of select malted wheat and barley, lemonade flavor and a hint of Wisconsin honey according to a release from the brewing company announcing its return.
“Shandy” is short for “shandygaff”, as a mixture of beer and soda or lemonade is called in England and Germany. It’s been popular there since the 17th century also sometimes called a “radler”.
The summer favorite has become so popular since its introduction in the Midwest in 2007 that people often buy up whatever supply is left in early September - this Lounge Lizard included.
Summer Shandy retails for approximately $6.99 to $7.99 a 6-pack and is available at most major alcohol retailers. It’s distributed locally by Bonbright.
This year April Fool’s fell perfectly with the second day of Major League Baseball, so throw in a Summer Shandy and it’s beginning to look a lot like summer!
College Night at Hammerjax get a makeover
Wednesday night College Night at Hammerjax has been around for a while, but it’s about to get an overhaul of sorts.
Elite Management will take over promotion for the weekly event starting April 6.
They’re promising a brand spanking new College Night experience.
The biggest change — buses. That’s right, UD and Wright State students can get a safe ride to and from the club; no need to have a DD or search for parking.
The bus will pick up at W.O. Wright’s, 3979 Colonel Glenn Highway, Fairborn, at 10:15 p.m., then at the McGinnis Center at UD, 301 Lowes St., at 10:45 p.m.
It’s still 18 and older and all students with proper ID get in free before midnight. Yep. Free.
The drinks are not free, but pretty close. Ladies drinks are $1 throughout the night. Miller Lites are $1.50.
They’ll be changing up the vibe with theme parties, guest bartenders, disc jockeys, VIP hosts, go-go dancers and shot girls.
One thing to note: The club will be enforcing a strict dress code. Be prepared to be turned away if you’re wearing plain white tees, sports jerseys, jean shorts, anything excessively baggy.

When: Wednesdays starting April 6.
The bite: No cover for college students before midnight, otherwise cover is $7 for guys younger than 21, $5 for everyone else. If you want to take the bus round trip, it’s $10 and includes entry to the club.
