<![CDATA[(This story is running in Friday’s Active Dayton, but here’s the info early in case you want to check out Remixx Lounge during their soft opening this weekend. Nancy will be hosting karaoke Thursday night. If you go, let us know what you think!)

DAYTON — A new bar opening downtown this week hopes to offer signature martinis and diverse entertainment to a mature audience.

Owner Jesse Patterson said Remixx Lounge, 146 E. Third St., is opening its doors this weekend, with an official ribbon cutting and grand opening planned for Thursday, Feb. 23.

The upscale lounge has been a labor of love for Patterson for more than six years.

He worked previously for Buffalo Wild Wings and has done promotions for the Dayton Funny Bone and the Schuster Performing Arts Center, always dreaming of running his own venue.

“I’ve always been inspired to have my own place,” said the Central State University graduate. “I’ve watched a lot of clubs that were successful and those that weren’t.”

Housed in a former adult novelty store, Remixx will (also) cater to adults. It’s 25 and up only.

Patterson said he hopes the lounge will be a place where adults can enjoy a drink and some entertainment without the crowded club atmosphere.

“The baby boomers, the older people that we’re trying to attract, they don’t want a club,” he said.

Remixx’s specialty will be signature martinis, which Patterson said he hopes to test out during a preview event and have local people help name.

Full details on the grand opening are not yet available, but Mayor Gary Leitzell has confirmed an official ribbon cutting to take place at 5 p.m. on Feb. 23.

Remixx will be open Wednesday through Sunday. A tentative schedule includes a Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack Happy Hour on Wednesdays, karaoke with Nancy Sell on Thursdays, jazz on Fridays and an ’80s and ’90s Remixx on Saturdays.

Patterson said he’s open to suggestions from the community for more events.

“I want to make this space universal and I want it to be diverse,” he said.

Remixx Lounge’s hours will be 4 p.m. to midnight Wednesdays and Thursdays; 4 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Fridays; 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Saturdays; and 6 p.m. to midnight Sundays.

There will be no cover charge, except possibly on nights with live music.

Contact the bar at remixxdayton.com or (937) 228-MIXX.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… at local bars, that is. It’s time for the annual Oregon District ‘Toys for Tots’ Santa Pub Crawl.

If you’ve never experienced the event before, this is the night when hundreds of holiday-themed revelers descend on the bars of Fifth Street for some holiday cheer in a glass.
Santa is in the title, but your outfit options aren’t limited to the classic red and white suit and hat. In years past, there have been elves, reindeer, snowmen and snowwomen, and Mrs. Clauses both naughty and nice.

The only thing you must not forget is a $10 unwrapped toy to donate to Toys for Tots. Scrooges who don’t donate or dress up will not get into all the bars for free.

Where: Starts at Dublin Pub and ends at Ned Pepper’s, with stops at Trolley Stop, Blind Bob’s, Tumbleweed Connection and Oregon Express in between. Come for the whole thing, a few bars, or just pick your favorite and the crawl will come to you!

When: Saturday, Dec. 10. Start time is 5:30
p.m. You should arrive at the last stop, Ned Pepper’s, around midnight. The crawl ends when the bar closes.

The bite: $10 unwrapped toy

Another holiday party opportunity: Vanity Theft Ugly Sweater Show

Throw on your favorite reindeer jumper and head to Blind Bob’s for an upbeat evening with the ladies of Vanity Theft.

Where: Blind Bob’s, 430 E. Fifth St., Dayton

When: 9:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9

The bite: $5

If you’re already sick of the Christmas music that’s been playing non-stop since Halloween, if tree lightings and craft bazaars just aren’t your thing, if you’re looking for something a bit dirtier to do this December, you’re going to love this weekend’s lineup of local events.

As the temperature drops, Dayton clubs are getting a bit dark. Some are even letting their freak flag fly, and you’re invited to do the same.

Repent at Aquarius

Fans of the Night of Syn that’s been a Friday night staple at Club Vex for the past few years won’t want to miss the newest industrial night incarnation hosted by resident DJs, Matt Freeman and Infidel-icious. REPENT will kick off Friday in the newly remodeled upstairs at Aquarius.

The music, with opening night guest DJs, Sideshow and TC, will be a familiar mix of Industrial, Goth, EBM and ’80s Wave.

A new addition is a private fetish room hosted by Sisters of the Sacred Flesh and local alternative model/performer Rocky Doll.

The Sisters are a fetish performance troupe. Check out their diverse interests at sistersofthesacredflesh.com.

Where: Club Aquarius 2nd Floor, 135 E. 2nd St., Dayton

When: Doors open at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2

The bite: No cover before 11 p.m., then $5 for those 18 to 20 and $3 for 21 and older

Gem City Festival of the Fallen

Metal is the word at this show organized by Bloody Knuckles Entertainment, local promoters trying to give the metal scene in Dayton a boost. Six bands for $7. Live performances by Side Show, Steel Capped Hooligans, Imbroglio, Architects of Doom, Zuel, and Forces of Nature.

Where: Hammerjax, 111 E. Fourth St. Dayton

Dirty Little Secret Sensual Circus

Dirty Little Secret Variety Shows have been held in the past at Wiley’s Comedy Club and J-Alans. This is the second time the mixture of burlesque, cabaret, comedy and more will take the stage at BoJangles.

Performances by singer/dancer Cherry La Voix, magician Erik Tait, FreakShow Deluxe, the Reverend Tommy Gunn, Johnny Business, Miss Malice, Hannah Bel, the Amazing Christopher, comedian Dean DeLorean, hostess Sarah Walls, and musical artists Todd the Fox and Lisa Bunny.

Where: BoJangles, 1925 S. Alex Road, West Carrollton

When: 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3

The bite: 21 and older only, $5 cover charge.

More info: facebook.com/DaytonsDirtyLittleSecret

All About the Money Party

Being a gold digger will be an advantage at this theme party. Guys will be given fake money upon arrival and it’s up to the ladies to try and snag as much as they can before the end of the night. The female with the most fake cash will win a prize. It would appear there are no rules regarding how to make the cash, so use your imagination ladies. (But let’s keep it legal!)

DJ Tony Desaro will kick things off with an electronic set until midnight.

Where: Vex, 101 S. St. Clair St., Dayton

When: 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3

The bite: Cover charge at Vex is typically $3 for ages 18-20 and $5 for 21 and older.

Happy Black Friday! If you’ve gotten your fill of standing in lines at the mall, then it’s time to party. Here are some weekend bar best bets.

Rubi Girls

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the biggest bar night of the year, and the Friday after is every retailer’s most frenzied day. But for Dayton’s most notorious dancing, singing, joke cracking divas in drag, it’s all about the Saturday after Turkey Day.

For more than a decade, that’s been the night the Rubi Girls hold their annual benefit for AIDS Resource Center Ohio. The event is dubbed “The Show Must Go On” so you can expect just about anything.

Where: Masque, 34 N. Jefferson St., Dayton

When: 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26

Tickets: $20 reserved seating tickets are available at arcohio.org. General admission at the door will be $10.

Canal Street Tavern’s 30th Birthday Hootenanny!

Live music has been wafting out the doors of Canal Street Tavern since 1981. To celebrate, they’ve made an open invitation to anyone who has played the venue in the past to grace the stage once again. Local music junkies could be in for some great surprises.

Where: Canal Street Tavern, 308 E. First St., Dayton

When: Doors open at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 26

The bite: $5

More info: canalstreettavern.com

Legbone

In other anniversary news, punk rock outfit Legbone is turning 20, which means the band is almost old enough to have a drink at Blind Bob’s. Raise a nearly legal birthday toast during their anniversary show.

Where: Blind Bob’s, 430 E. Fifth St.

When: 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26

Before you stuff yourself with turkey and sweet potatoes this Thanksgiving, let loose at a local Thanksgiving Eve bash.

Many bars and nightclubs will be packed with people avoiding their in-laws and the heat of the kitchen. Why not join in? It’s not like you have to work the next day. Here are just a few Black Wednesday celebrations happening Nov. 23.

UPDATE! I’ve just been informed that the new Dayton Vault nightclub, 20 N. Jefferson St., will host its grand opening on Thanksgiving Day. An alternative to eating lots of turkey and passing out on the couch. More info can be found on their Facebook page.

Wiley’s 9th Annual Thanksgiving Eve Show

Lots of Wiley’s former regulars make the trip home to the Dayton area for the holidays so the lineup at this annual show is a veritable Who’s Who of homegrown comedy talent.

Laugh your holiday socks off for just $5. Wiley’s is located at 101 Pine St. in the Oregon District. Doors open at 7:15 and the show starts at 8 p.m. More info is available at wileyscomedyclub.com.

Asylum + 1470 + Parallax Reunion

Thanksgiving Eve is a great opportunity to connect with friends who have moved away. Vex, 101 S. St. Clair St., Dayton, is taking the reunion theme to the max, bringing together some of the DJs that kept Dayton on the dance floor in the late 90s. Reconnect with Dwaine Wheeler (1470 and Parallax, Matt Freeman (Asylum and Parallax), Eric Heliman (Asylum and Parallax), Infidel-icious (Parallax) and Kyle Thirteen (Parallax).

It’s an 18 and up event and cover is $5. Doors open at 10 p.m.

Bar Louie Beavercreek Thanksgiving Bash

Bar Louie at The Greene is bucking the trend and having its party on Thanksgiving Day. If you’re related to the people who eat Thanksgiving dinner at 2 p.m., then this event is for you. Once Grandma falls asleep, slip out to Bar Louie for its first tapping of Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Wear your best ugly holiday sweater because you could win a prize.

Bar Louie is located at 4492 Glengarry Drive, Beavercreek. The party starts at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 and there is no cover charge.

<![CDATA[This Friday — 11-11-11 — is one of those cool dates where the numbers are the same. Unfortunately in the Midwest, 11-11-11 is not a happy date.

The last time this sequence occurred, on Nov. 11, 1911, “The Great Blue Norther” quickly plunged temperatures and spawned severe thunderstorms and deadly tornadoes.

Several locations set record high temperatures and record low temperatures on the same day, according to the National Weather Service historical data. In Oklahoma City, the record high temperature of 83 degrees occurred before the cold front came through and dropped temperatures to a record low of 17 degrees by midnight. A strong blizzard developed behind the front in the Ohio Valley. A dust storm struck Oklahoma. Nine tornadoes occurred including an F4 in Janesville, Wis.,that killed nine people. One hour later, survivors were working through near zero visibility in blizzard conditions to rescue people trapped by debris.

But not to worry, WHIO-TV meteorologist Jamie Simpson said there is no Blue Norther in our short-term forecast. Friday will be sunny and cool with highs in the upper 40s.

Several local bars are cashing in on the repeating date by throwing 11-11-11 shindigs. So celebrate the number 11 or toast to the 100-year anniversary of the Great Blue Norther by raising your glass at 11:11 p.m.

Jimmie’s Ladder 11

The former Jimmie’s Cornerstone closed up shop on Oct. 31 and has been making the move across the street to their new digs in an old Dayton firehouse. Jimmie’s Ladder 11 will appropriately celebrate its grand opening on 11-11-11 and will kick it all off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. that day. UPDATE I’m now told that they will have a second ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:11 p.m. if you missed it this morning.

Where: Jimmie’s Ladder 11, 936 Brown St., Dayton

More info: (937) 424-1784

Heat Nightclub

Ciroc Ultra Premium is using the special date to promote their peach flavor vodka. They’ll be giving it away for free at Heat Nightclub. Cover is only $1 for everyone until 11:11 p.m.

And if there is a blizzard, you’ll be happy to be dancing someplace named Heat!

Where: Heat Nightclub, 6115 Brandt Pike, Huber Heights

More info: (937) 422-4601

Stone Brewing Company’s annual competition to crown the “Most Arrogant Pub in America” will kick off Oct. 28.

For one week, bars across the country will try to sell the most Arrogant Bastard Ale to win the title. Boston’s has won the competition twice, in 2006 and 2008.

The contest runs through Nov. 6 and Boston’s, usually closed on Sundays, will be open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 in the spirit of, well, winning.

Pints of Arrogant Bastard will be $3, pitchers and growlers will be $9, and for the super thirsty home brewer they will fill your Corni Keg (5 gallons) for $80.

Also on tap all week will be Oak Bastard and Double Bastard ales.

Are you an Arrogant Bastard fan? Does Dayton deserve to be home to the “Most Arrogant Pub in America?”
