Once again, the Mason City Council is responsible for appointing a peer to fill a vacant seat.
And once again there is a field of 10 residents who want the job Victor Kidd has vacated. Douglas Adkins, David Bratslavsky, Rich Cox, Shannon Markum, Scott Pierce and Lori Shutrump all tried for the seat David Nichols filled when Todd Wurzbacher left last fall. Donald Follmers, Mike Gilb, Mike Hagen and Bill Simmons are newcomers. If you know any of these candidates, tell me about them. Or if you don’t, what qualifications should Mason be looking for?

I wrote a story in today’s issue of the Pulse about how Mason council is divided over what voters really meant when they voted no on the 2-mill additional fire levy. If you voted no, did you mean you aren’t really concerned about improving response times to the entire city? Did you mean you want Mason to go ahead with the three station plan but use general funds to supplement the levy? What should council do next?

Mason is asking for a 2-mill additional levy on Nov. 4.
Officials have said they need the additional money to not only staff a station but also to maintain current levels of service. The station in downtown Mason must be moved because of Mason-Montgomery roadwork. The station on Cedar Village Drive needs to be relocated, according to a study the city commissioned. The third station would be located in the vicinity of Innovation Way.
These station relocations are necessary to meet national response time standards.
Do you want improved response times or should the city find budget cuts?

There are a lot of bloggers out there blasting the city council for wasting taxpayer money on things like the sports park, downtown and the community center.
City officials say they need to pass the fire levy in order keep things status quo. The additional 2 mill levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $70 more a year.
Are you in favor of the fire levy? How important is improving response times?

I wrote a story last week about how parking has become a source of hard feelings between some city officials and downtown businesses.
But hard feeling aside, what is the answer to revitalizing downtown? Councilman Victor Kidd is rolling up his sleeves, actively courting businesses and restaurants. He says other businesses must also join the effort, but he notes there is a “me, me” mentality that is road blocking parking solutions and other progress.
So, please tell me your thoughts on what is needed to jump start downtown.

The Deerfield Twp. trustees are supposed to give a first reading on residential zoning changes that will add transitional uses in the Fields Ertel cooridor.
About 50 people showed up at a special meeting last week to protest the changes. The Deerfield Zoning Commission denied the zoning changes in June. It would take a unanimous vote of the trustees to override the zoning commission.
What do you think?

Mason city officials are talking about talking to Butler County officials about a joint skate park venture.
The city shelved plans for its own park last year, because of cost overruns and the inability to strike a deal with Deerfield Twp. Township officials said they should have been part of the discussion, not just cost sharing.
Officials are thinking a skate park might be a nice addition to the 435-acre Voice of America Park in West Chester Twp.

This week I wrote about a Hamilton County woman who owns almost $5 million worth of real estate in Warren County, homes she has never lived in and cannot afford.
The bank has filed for foreclosure on two of the homes and her credit is in ruins.
She trusted her tax man, Eric Duke, who said he needed her good credit to buy the homes and that he would take the homes off her hands and earn her some money within three months.
Has anyone else run into this sort of situation before?

The Mason City Council Finance Committee will discuss an admissions tax on such venues as Kings Island and The Beach, on Monday, May 5 at 7 p.m.
This issue has arisen several times, but nothing has come of it. Business owners plan to attend the meeting to voice their misgivings. Increased admissions - percentages haven’t been decided - they say will adversely impact other businesses who benefit from the tourists who flood into town.
Is a tax reasonable? Mason officials have said the city has to spend extra on police, fire and road improvements because of the entertainment venues. If it is, what percentage would be acceptable?

It appears as if the icon for the downtown plaza in Mason is on the shelf for now.
With changeover on the Mason City Council and an expected higher than budgeted cost, the city has severed its relationship with artist Edward Casagrande.
The budget for the icon was $300,000.
He designed a “story tower” that would celebrate Mason’s past, present and future.
Former Mayor Char Pelfrey and other downtown committee members were thrilled with the design. The current council has said they aren’t sure they want an icon.
Plaza workers have created a planter to fill the space where the icon was supposed to be constructed.
Would you like to see an icon built? If so, how much should the city spend?

This week I interviewed the prosecutors and defense attorneys in the Michel Veillette death penalty case. Defense attorneys Greg Howard and Tim McKenna are concentrating much of their efforts on the mitigation phase - in case he is found guilty - of the trial to save his life.
If you were a juror and prosecutors Rachel Hutzel and Andy Sievers convinced you he killed his family, could you sentence him to death, or could you be persuaded to give him a life sentence instead. What would it take to convince you?
