The Buzz at the Feeders
The last few days, we have seen an increase in hummingbirds coming to the feeders at the Nature Center. They are certainly entertaining to watch as they squabble over the feeders.
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only breeding hummer in Ohio. They overwinter in central America which is a pretty long way to fly for such a teeny tiny bird! Their main food source is nectar but the young in the nest are fed insects. They are considered one of the most territorial species of hummingbird and you can witness this by how they guard bird feeders. To find out more about them, you can visit http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Ruby-throated_Hummingbird/id This is one of my favorite sites for looking up new birds! Also, for an up-close experience, join us at the Germantown Nature Center on Saturday, September 3rd for a hummingbird program!
