Miami’s third goal broke Bemidji’s back
By Pete Conrad
The Bemidji State Beavers acknowledged that the Miami RedHawks’ third goal scored by Bill Loupee in the second period of Thursday’s NCAA Frozen Four semifinal, the one that came 60 seconds after the Beavers had sliced the RedHawks lead to one, 2-1, was the ultimate game-changer.
“That was obviously a big goal for them,” BSU player Travis Winter said. “We thought we were tilting the ice a little bit (back to the Beavers’ side) and then they score that goal and things started going their way again.”
The Miami victory ended what the national media had dubbed as the tournament’s prime Cinderella story, even though the RedHawks, like the Beavers, had never played in the Frozen Four.
“It’s memories that will last a lifetime,” Bemidji State coach Tom Serratore said. “Obviously when you lose it stinks, (but) when you look back over it, you’re very proud to compete in an event like this.”
