Dave Young’s passing: a professional and personal loss
It is with great sorrow that I learned of Dave Young’s death on Monday, March 29.
To me, Dave was much more than one of the most honored — and as far as I’m concerned, the best — of the many sports information directors in American history in his years with the Miami Redskins.
Yes, Redskins. In Dave’s honor, that’s the only nickname that will be used here.
And he was much more than a man whose professionalism and integrity set such a high standard for me to follow (or at least try) that his impact on my life as a journalist ranks with that of Bill Moeller, Joe Nuxhall and Dirk Allen.
He was a good friend. A very good friend.
I had a feeling Dave’s health problems had taken a turn for the worse when I didn’t see him at recent Miami University men’s and women’s basketball games and hockey games, and when I tried calling his home a few weeks ago and nobody answered.
I had hoped he was just off on one of his many trips with his wife, Marilyn — I knew it was too early in the year for Gatlinburg, Tenn. in the Smokies, but maybe somewhere else, somewhere warm and sunny.
I have many good memories of time shared with Dave, of countless spring days in the Miami baseball press box, of spending time with him between games during doubleheaders munching snacks in his RV, even of my days back in the 1970s as a reporter for The Miami Student when we would play Hearts on the team bus.
And I still remember the night in 1978 when The Great Blizzard struck while the men’s basketball team bus was returning from a game at Toledo.
The bus driver finally turned off the interstate at Vandalia and Dave, Darrell Hedric, Archie Aldridge, Randy Ayers, John Shoemaker, Joe Barry, Jerry Peirson and others — including a very sick Pete Conrad, who had just come down with the flu — were stranded with all hotels booked up.
It was Dave who was sent off the bus, into the 50 mph wind and snow, to find accommodations of some sort. After 10 or 15 minutes had passed many of us figured we’d never see Dave alive again. But he returned with the news that we had rooms for the night.
Well, not rooms, exactly. More like jail cells in Vandalia’s municipal building. We were there for more than two days, actually spending most of our time in a courtroom, warm and safe. Thanks to Dave.
In later years, after I began working at the Journal-News, whenever I needed a comment concerning Miami sports, Dave was the first person I turned to.
It was Dave who helped get the word out on Ron Harper and those Tangerine Bowl football teams and Miami’s Cradle of Coaches.
But he was a true professional who never tried to hide the truth.
Those are only some of the things I already am missing about my friend, Dave.

Miami’s LoVerde in hospital
Vincent LoVerde, Miami University’s junior defenseman who has played in 40 games this season, was absent from the NCAA Midwest Regional in Fort Wayne, Ind. due to an unspecified “unfortunate situation,” according to Miami coach Enrico Blasi.
“He’s got some things he’s working on,” Blasi said following his team’s 3-2 victory in double-overtime against Michigan in the regional final. “He’s in the hospital and he couldn’t play. Hopefully he’ll be out of the hospital in a few days.”
LoVerde, a native of Chicago, has three goals and eight assists this season and when the regional tournament started was leading the team with 72 blocked shots.

Hirschfeld goal wins it for Miami
Alden Hirschfeld scored 1:54 into the second overtime period to give the Miami RedHawks a 3-2 victory over the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA Midwest Regional final Sunday, March 28 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Miami clinches a berth to the NCAA Frozen Four, to be held at Ford Field in Detroit, and in the semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8 the RedHawks will face Boston College, a 9-7 winner over Yale earlier Sunday in the Northeast Regional final.
A power-play goal by Pat Cannone put Miami in front 1-0 with 7:52 left in the first period, but the Wolverines answered less than two minutes later with a goal from David Wohlberg.
A goal by Chad Langlais put the Wolverines on top 49 seconds into the second period, but about two minutes later Cannone answered with his second goal.
Connor Knapp recorded 55 saves, just two shy of Miami’s single-game record, and was named regional Most Outstanding Player.
Knapp was named to the all-regional team, as were teammates Cannone and Curtis McKenzie, who had two assists on Sunday after coming up with a goal and assist in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville.

History points to Reichard, but Miami needs offense
If the last three years are any indication, Miami coach Rico Blasi will start Cody Reichard at goal for the second straight day when the RedHawks take on the Michigan Wolverines in the Mideast Regional final tonight, March 28.
Blasi never has changed goalies during any of his team’s appearances in the NCAA.
In 2007 he went with Jeff Zatkoff in both of Miami’s Northeast Regional games despite the presence of Charlie Effinger, who had started, and lost, Miami’s one game in the 2006 Northeast Regional.
In 2008, Zatkoff again started both of Miami’s NCAA games, and last year Cody Reichard made all four starts even though Connor Knapp saw more action during the regular season and made a start in the CCHA playoffs.
It might not matter one way or another unless Miami’s offense can start converting more it its shots into goals. The RedHawks, who average 3.4 goals per game, have scored only two in each of their last four games.

Chargers clipped their own comeback against Miami
The Alabama-Huntsville Chargers still are kicking themselves, I bet, for what happened late in the third period of their 2-1 loss to the Miami RedHawks today, March 27 in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Brennan Barker scored the Chargers’ only goal with 38.3 seconds remaining, and it pulled them to within one of the top-ranked RedHawks, at which point you can be sure Miami fans started to have flashback fever.
You’ll remember, even if you’ve tried to forget, the final, paralyzing minute of last year’s NCAA championship game when the RedHawks’ 3-1 lead against Boston University turned into a 3-3 tie and, ultimately, a 4-3 loss in overtime.
Anyway, about four minutes earlier in tonight’s game Alabama-Huntsville was presented with a power play when Miami’s Jarod Palmer was sent to the penalty box for tripping. The power play lasted exactly 3 seconds. That’s how long it took for UAH’s Matt Jarvinen to be called for hooking and he, too, was asked to take a seat.
“We tried to get some momentum going,” Chargers coach Danton Cole said. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot.”
People might shake their heads at Alabama-Huntsville’s final record of 12-18-3, and it has been suggested by more than one person that the Chargers had no business in the NCAA Tournament, that in reality they had a pretty dismal season.
Cole begs to differ.
“I think we had a great year. It’s tough to go from A to Z in a short time. And with a lot of our losses, you have to give our players a pat on the back,” he said, noting that UAH’s 2-1 loss to Miami was one of many 2-1 losses against very strong teams, including a pair of 2-1 overtime losses to Bemidji State.
You can forgive Cole for feeling pretty good about his 12 wins this season. That’s one more than Alabama-Huntsville had in the previous two seasons combined.
Come to think of it, Alabama-Huntsville didn’t fare much worse this weekend than most of the elite programs.
Six of the teams ranked in the top 10 in this week’s USCHO poll already have been eliminated in the NCAA Tournament: No. 2 Denver, No. 4 North Dakota, No. 6 Cornell, No. 7 St. Cloud State, No. 9 Northern Michigan and No. 10 Bemidji State.
The only top 10 teams still in the running for a national championship are No. 1 Miami, No. 3 Boston College, No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 8 Yale.
Right now, I’m not so sure that No. 11 Michigan isn’t the team to beat. All the Wolverines have done in their last seven games is to beat Lake Superior State 5-2 and 6-0, Michigan State 5-1 and 5-3, Miami 5-2, Northern Michigan 2-1 and Bemidji State 5-1.
It will be interesting to see if Miami coach Enrico Blasi goes with Cody Reichard again in Sunday’s regional final against Michigan.
Reichard allowed only on goal against Alabama-Huntsville.
On the other hand, the Wolverines scorched him with a five spot last Saturday.
On the other hand, Miami’s other goalie, Connor Knapp, is playing very well right now, having allowed only two goals in his last four games.
On the other hand, Reichard is the CCHA Player of the Year for a reason. He has had one of the great seasons in program history.
If Blasi hasn’t made up his mind yet, I can’t say I can blame him.

PairWise hockey rankings boost Miami hopes
The latest PairWise rankings seem to confirm the brightest hopes of Miami’s hockey team, that the RedHawks will indeed receive the overall No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament.
The rankings were updated following Miami’s 2-1 victory over Ferris State today, March 20 in the third-place game of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament and Denver’s 6-3 loss to Wisconsin in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association third-place game.
As of 10:45 p.m., PairWise ranked Miami No. 1 with a rating of .5793, followed by Denver at No. 2 (.5766) and Wisconsin at No. 3 (.5685).
The next three teams in the PairWise rankings are No. 4 Boston College (.5625), No. 5 North Dakota (.5623) and No. 6 St. Cloud State (.5504).
The PairWise rankings have been an accurate indicator of the NCAA seeds and selections.
In the CCHA championship game, Michigan defeated Northern Michigan 2-1 to claim an automatic NCAA berth. Louie Caporusso scored both goals for the Wolverines, who came into the conference playoffs as the No. 7 seed.

Final: Miami 2, Ferris State 1
The Miami RedHawks defeated the Ferris State Bulldogs 2-1 in their third-place game in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament today, March 20 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The victory by second-ranked Miami, coupled with top-ranked Denver’s 6-3 loss to Wisconsin earlier today, will likely give the RedHawks the overall No. 1 seed for next week’s NCAA Tournament.
Jarod Palmer scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 4:04 left in the the third period.
Freshman forward Steve Mason scored Miami’s first goal with 15:16 to go in the second period. It was his first career goal.
Ferris State’s Casey Haines tied the game with 5:11 remaining in the period.

NCAA hockey overall top seed still up for grabs
Miami University’s second-ranked hockey team did not necessarily play its way out of consideration for the No. 1 overall seed for next week’s NCAA Tournament with their 5-2 loss to Michigan on Friday night in the CCHA semifinals.
In the Western Collegiate Hockey Association semifinals, top-ranked Denver lost 4-3 to No. 5 North Dakota, and No. 3 Wisconsin lost 2-0 to No. 6/7 St. Cloud State.
All three teams are back in action today in consolation contests. Miami faces eighth-ranked Ferris State, and Denver will collide with Wisconsin.
In the current PairWise power rankings, which is an excellent indicator of how teams will be seeded in the NCAA, Denver (27-8-40) is No. 1 with a rating of .5810, Miami (26-7-7) is close behind at .5771, and Wisconsin (24-10-4) is third at .5657.
If Miami beats Ferris State and Denver loses to Wisconsin, the best guess is that the RedHawks would vault over Denver and grab the top overall seed.
On the other hand, if the RedHawks lose today and Wisconsin wins, Miami could drop far enough in the PairWise rankings to put a much-hoped-for berth in the Midwest in Fort Wayne, Ind. regionals in jeopardy.
The RedHawks want to play in Fort Wayne because it’s much closer than the other three sites, giving Miami fans a better opportunity to travel, and the RedHawks tend to be energized when playing in front of their vocal fans.
The Northeast Regional will be held in Worchester, Mass., the East Regional is in Albany, N.Y. and the West Regional is in St. Paul, Minn.

Michigan coach tries to kill RedHawks with kindness
By Pete Conrad
Listen to Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson talk about the Miami RedHawks and you might think he’s their No. 1 fan.
Of course he is anything but. Berenson is playing the game, and so is Miami coach Enrico Blasi. The game of doing everything within their power to take the blunt the other team’s emotional edge.
Blasi, for instance, instructed his players following practice on Tuesday not to say anything to reporters about Michigan. Not a peep. In fact, reporters were allowed to interview players that day only on the condition that we not ask the players any question about the Wolverines.
I smiled and said, “Can I ask you about Michigan?” Blasi smiled and said, emphatically, no. I’m still trying to decide if he was kidding. (It didn’t really matter one way or the other, because he already had talked about the Wolverines during a CCHA conference call that morning.)
Earlier that day, Berenson had plenty to say about the RedHawks.
“They have arguably the best team in the country, let’s face it, and have had from Game 1 this year,” Berenson said.
“I can’t remember anyone who’s dominated the league as they’ve done this year,” he went on. They have as good of a defense as anybody in the CCHA and they have as good of a forward nucleus as anyone. They’ve done a great job of building that program and I can’t remember a team that has dominated this conference the way they have this year.”
But make no mistake. Michigan has been a sleeping giant this year, and now this giant is wide awake. The Wolverines never won more than three games in a row during the regular season. Since the start of the CCHA Tournament, they have won four straight, beating Lake Superior State 5-2 and 6-0 and Michigan State 5-1 and 5-3.
One big reason is the Wolverines’ line of junior Louie Caporusso and sophomores David Wolhberg and Luke Glendening. Over the past five games they have combined for 11 goals and 13 assists.
If Miami can get past Michigan to Saturday’s championship game, it will be a good indication that everything Berenson said about the RedHawks was true, especially the “best team in the country” part. Whether he wants it to be or not.

Hayes named to All-District 14 first team
Miami University senior guard Kenny Hayes has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 14 first team, the organization announced today, March 16.
Hayes joins Jarrod Jones of Ball State, David Kool of Western Michigan, Rodney Pierce of Buffalo and Chris Singletary of Kent State) on the first team for District 14, which is comprised of Mid-American Conference schools. That makes him eligible for All-America consideration.
Hayes, a graduate of Northmont High School who also played at Cincinnati State before coming to Miami, earned first-team All-MAC honors this season, marking the seventh consecutive year a RedHawk has earned first-team distinction — the longest active string of any MAC school.
He is a two-time All-MAC selection, earning honorable mention accolades in 2007-08. Last season, Hayes suffered a season-ending injury in early December 2008 and persevered through a nearly eight-month recovery process to return to the hardwood this season.
Hayes finished the season averaging a team-leading 14.9 ppg, which ranked eighth among MAC statistical leaders, while averaging a league-best 35.7 minutes of play. Seven times in 2009-10, Hayes reached or surpassed the 20-point scoring plateau and did so 14 times in his career. He scored a season-high 27 points against Buffalo in the MAC Tournament quarterfinal, the most points scored by a RedHawk this season.
Hayes also ranked among MAC statistical leaders in free-throw percentage, assists and assist/turnover ratio. He played and started in all 32 games this season, tying for fourth on Miami’s single-season games started chart. Playing 1,143 minutes in 2009-10, Hayes moved into eighth on Miami’s single-season minutes played list.
This year, Hayes was a Preseason MAC All-East Division selection and was tabbed the MAC East Division Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 8.

Harper keeps record, but Medlock and Hayes were pretty good, too
By Pete Conrad
It was 25 years and four days ago that junior forward Ron Harper unleashed his total package against the Ball State Cardinals.
Harper soared for 45 points in a 91-70 victory in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals on March 8, 1985 in Toledo.
That 45-point performance set the MAC Tournament single-game scoring record, and it still stands.
But just barely.
On Thursday, March 11, there were two players whose feats were in the finest Harper tradition.
Eastern Michigan senior Carlos Medlock scored 42 points in his team’s 97-89 double-overtime loss to Akron. Eight of those points came in the final 35 seconds of the second overtime as he tried desperately to bring the Eagles back from a nine-point deficit in the closing seconds.
Overall, Medlock connected on 13-of-26 field goal attempts and 11-of-12 free throws, one of the great performances in MAC history.
He wasn’t alone on Thursday. Although the point total was smaller, the 27-point effort by Miami’s Kenny Hayes in the 73-59 victory over the Buffalo Bulls later that night was just as impressive.
Hayes also sank 11-of-12 free throws, it was his two baskets that sparked Miami’s 17-0 run early in the first half to give the RedHawks a lead they never relinquished, it was Hayes’ 3-point basket that stopped a 7-0 run by the Bulls 7 minutes into the second half, and it was Hayes making six straight free throws in a span of 54 seconds down the stretch that helped Miami seal the victory.
Also, Hayes scored 27 points — the most of any RedHawk this season — within the confines of Miami’s deliberate offense, in 38 minutes of playing time. Medlock was on the court for 48 minutes.
For the last several weeks Hayes has made it clear that he wants that NCAA Tournament berth and would do everything in his power to get it. Of course, that’s what most everyone in a college uniform says at this time of year.
Looks like it was more than talk with Hayes.
“I just want to come in and lead my team to a victory,” Hayes said. “I don’t get another chance after this.”

Coles sees a dark-horse team in MAC tourney
By Pete Conrad
Miami University basketball coach Charlie Coles is not assuming that his RedHawks, should they beat Buffalo in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Thursday, March 11, would play top-seeded Kent State in the semifinals the following night.
The Miami-Buffalo winner will take on the Kent State-Ohio winner.
“Ohio U., I’ve said all along, is the most improved team in the league,” Coles said. “They’re a really good offensive ballclub.”
Although the Bobcats have been an up-and-down team, they scored 85 or more points eight times times this season, and they’re the only team since Jan. 9 to score 70 points against the RedHawks (Ohio’s 70-68 win in Athens on Feb. 24).
“I still think at this point Kent and Akron are huge favorites,” Coles said.
And his own team?
“We’re just trying to win one game,” he said. “We win one game, we’ll see what happens.”

Hayes, Mavunga named All-MAC
CLEVELAND — Miami University’s Kenny Hayes and Julian Mavunga earned all-conference honors this season, the Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday, March 10.
Hayes, a senior guard, was selected to the first team, while Mavunga, a sophomore forward/center, was an honorable mention pick.
Hayes leads the RedHawks in scoring at 14.6 points per game to rank ninth in the MAC. Hayes averages 15.1 in conference games. He leads the MAC in minutes played per game (35.6).
Mavunga leads Miami in rebounding at 6.4 per game, and averages 10.1 points per game.
Hayes’ selection marks the seventh straight season Miami has had a first-team honoree, the longest streak of any teams in the conference.

Coles looks for big things from Mavunga
By Pete Conrad
It’s Charlie Coles’ style. When the Miami University basketball coach has a big-time but still-developing talent on his roster, he takes pains to nurture that talent.
It isn’t a gentle nurture, either. Coles pushes, hard. He keeps the pressure on. If he’s ever satisfied, he takes pains not to show it. He doesn’t praise if he can help it, though sometimes it slips out, because Coles’ first instinct is always to tell it as he sees it. But Coles tries doesn’t want players who are satisfied with themselves.
Nathan Peavy knows about that. Coles pushed Peavy from the time he was a seldom-used freshman until he was a senior who averaged 14 points and helped lead Miami into the NCAA Tournament.
Coles wasn’t easy on Michael Bramos, either, the same Michael Bramos who finished his collegiate career last season as Mid-American Conference Player of the Year.
Now it’s sophomore forward Julian Mavunga who is being pushed, Coles hopes, towards greatness. Mavunga has all the tools, including an intellect that enables him to soak up much in a remarkably short amount of time.
This is an all-state player from Indianapolis who never touched a basketball until he was in the seventh grade, a collegiate sophomore who played with an injured leg throughout his freshman season.
“He was never comfortable with his leg, and then he got overweight,” Coles said of Mavunga just before practice this morning, March 9, at Millett Hall. “It’s tough to play out of shape with an injury.”
There are times when Coles can be gentle and generous. This was not one of them. Not with a trip to Cleveland just hours away. Not with a team, if it wants to make a serious run at the NCAA, that needs Mavunga to be an explosive force against Buffalo on Thursday. He was exactly that last week when he head-butted the Bulls with a 17-point, 3-block performance.
“This year he’s show us that if he keeps progressing,” Coles said, “he’ll be a very good player.”
When Coles says “good player,” he means All-MAC caliber. When he says “very good player,” he’s talking about someone who can strap the team to his shoulders.
Not all players are up to that burden, and it might be too early for Mavunga to accept that role. Right now, Kenny Hayes is the man. It’s Hayes who wants desperately for Miami to run the table at Quicken Loans Arena.
But if Mavunga can dish it out on the inside while Hayes works his magic, this could be a very interesting week.
