Ehlen named to women’s basketball staff

Mark Ehlen, former Xavier and Toledo women’s basketball head coach, has been hired as an assistant coach at Miami University, head coach Maria Fantanarosa announced Tuesday.

Ehlen, who has been an assistant the last two seasons at Cincinnati, coached at Xavier from 1986-95 and at Toledo from 1995-2008.

Fantanarosa was Ehlan’s top assistant coach at Xavier for four seasons (1990-94).

“Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Miami,” Fantanarosa said. “He is a positive teacher who brings out the best in his players. His energy and work ethic will immediately contribute to the success of this program. He is a proven winner.”

In 13 seasons at Toledo, Ehlen led the Rockets to four regular-season Mid-American Conference Championships and four MAC Tournament Championships and NCAA appearances with an overall record of 240-149, including 140-73 in the MAC. His Toledo teams recorded six 20-win seasons and finished 25th in the final 1999 AP poll.

Ehlen spent nine years guiding the Xavier program. He led the Musketeers to 125 wins during his tenure and the 1992 Midwestern Collegiate Conference regular-season championship. He also led Xavier to the 1993 MCC Tournament Championship and its first-ever NCAA appearance.

Known for demanding success from his players both on and off the court, Ehlen has a 100 percent graduation rate for his four-year players and four times has had a team rank in the top-10 in grade point average by the WBCA. He is a two-time WBCA District 4 Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

“I’m so excited to be a part of this program,” said Ehlen. “Maria and I go way back. I have so much respect for her, and her staff. I can’t wait to get started.”

Ehlen earned his bachelor’s degree in communications education from Ohio State in 1975; he received a master’s degree in broadcast communications from Bowling Green in 1979. Ehlen and his wife, Mimi, have a 14-year old daughter, Eliza.
