<![CDATA[Miami University senior Kevin Dwyer is in 13th place halfway through the decathlon in the NCAA Track & Field Championships. He started the meet ranked 11th nationally in the event.

Dwyer’s best event today, June 10 was the high jump. He tied for third.

The decathlon competition will conclude Thursday, June 11 with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 run.

“I didn’t have any huge marks today, but they were all solid,” Dwyer said. “Compared to others, my time wasn’t there in the 400 (meter dash), but it was still my season best. That gave me a little confidence coming out of the first day.

“I know tomorrow’s first two events (hurdles and discus) are crucial to a good score,” Dwyer said. “I think it will likely come down to the 1,500 (run). As long as I (have my best marks) for a good second day, I will be happy. We will see where I fall in the final standings.”

Jordan Petraitis, who recently completed his senior season as Miami University’s third baseman, was drafted today by the Chicago Cubs in the 28th round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Petraitis, of Canal Fulton, Ohio, was the 860th pick overall and the 11th from the Mid-American Conference.

He hit a career-high .364 for the RedHawks this spring and tied for the club lead with 54 RBIs, but for the first time in three seasons did not make All-MAC. He was an All-MAC first-team selection as a sophomore and a second-team selection as a junior.

Cookie Miller, a former player at Nebraska, is transferring to Miami, according to a report on the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star Web site.

Miller, a 5-foot-7, 165-pound point guard, played two seasons for the Huskers before announcing his intention to transfer last month, the paper said. He averaged 6.7 points and 3.6 assists per game in two seasons.

After sitting out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules, Miller would have two years of eligibility for the RedHawks, the paper said.

From the Miami University athletic department:

A Frozen Four rematch with Bemidji State and a clash with perennial power North Dakota, plus Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) home series against Notre Dame and Michigan State, highlight the 2009-10 Miami University hockey schedule, Head Coach Enrico Blasi announced today. The slate features 17 regular-season games, plus an exhibition, at Steve Cady Arena.

The RedHawks, who are coming off a national runner-up finish in their first-ever Frozen Four appearance, face five teams who were listed in the final USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Top 20 poll of 2008-09. Four other opponents on the new schedule received votes in that poll.

“We are extremely excited with our schedule,” Blasi said. “The league schedule is always tough and you have to be ready every week. Our non-conference schedule will give us an opportunity, but be a challenge at the same time — I believe one that will make us better. We are looking forward to the season and competing against some of the nation’s best.”

Following an exhibition against the University of Windsor (Canada) on Oct. 3, Miami opens the regular season with a home series against WCHA member St. Cloud State before traveling to NCAA regional finalist New Hampshire. The RedHawks will spend Thanksgiving weekend in Grand Forks, N.D., for games against Bemidji State and North Dakota. Miami faces the Midwest Regional Champion Beavers, the team it defeated 4-1 to earn a spot in the 2009 championship game, on Friday and UND on Saturday.

The final non-conference series is a two-game set with Robert Morris. The teams will meet at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena on Jan. 8 with the return game in Oxford two days later.

The CCHA schedule features home series with Michigan State (Oct. 23-24), Ferris State (Nov. 13-14), Notre Dame (Dec. 4-5), Western Michigan (Jan. 29-30), Lake Superior State (Feb. 5-6) and Nebraska-Omaha (Feb. 19-20).

This year, Miami and its schedule partner Ohio State will pair up with Western Michigan and Ferris State, meaning those teams will play four games against each other. The RedHawks will face the Broncos on the road Nov. 20-21 and the Bulldogs Jan. 15-16. The two weekend series with the Buckeyes will once again be split with the teams meeting in Columbus Dec. 11 and Feb. 27 and in Oxford Dec. 12 and Feb. 26.

Single CCHA weekend road series take place at Northern Michigan, Michigan, Alaska and Bowling Green.

Times will be announced at a later date.

Season-ticket holders from last year should have been contacted recently about the process for renewing or upgrading seats for the 2009-10 season. Fans needing additional information, or who wish to be placed on the season-ticket waiting list, can contact the Miami Athletic Ticket Office at 866-MUHAWKS (866-684-2957) or 513-529-HAWK (4295).

Sarah Billstrom hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, and Jessica Simpson threw her second consecutive shutout as the Miami RedHawks defeated Western Michigan 1-0 Saturday to win the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championship.

With the win, the RedHawks earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.

Simpson was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Billstrom and Kat Russette joined her on the All-Tournament team.

Simpson and Bronco starter Meredith Whitney combined to allow only two hits through the first five innings and had no runners reach third base.

Billstrom’s blast in the bottom of the sixth inning landed about 20 feet past the leftfield fence. It proved to be all Miami needed as Simpson forced three consecutive groundouts to Billstrom in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the win.

Miami will find out its NCAA fate on Sunday when the bracket is revealed at 10 p.m. on ESPNU.

From the Miami athletic department:

After leading the RedHawks to consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, Miami University volleyball coach Carolyn Condit signed a contract extension through the 2012-13 season, Miami athletics director Brad Bates announced Monday.

“We are very excited to have Carolyn continue to lead our volleyball program,” said Bates. “She graduates her students, wins championships, serves our community and develops leaders of exceptional quality. We look forward to the future of our program and their contributions to our ‘Culture of Champions’ vision.”

Condit led the RedHawks to a 21-12 record in 2008 and an at-large selection in the NCAA Tournament. In 2007, Miami was 20-11 and won the Mid-American Conference Tournament to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Overall, Condit is 453-332 in 25 years at Miami. She has 11 20-win seasons with the RedHawks and eight NCAA appearances. Her players have received 61 All-MAC honors and 42 Academic All-MAC awards.

“It’s a great compliment that Brad and our administration have offered this contract extension,” said Condit. “I appreciate their vote of confidence, and I remain inspired to push our volleyball program to the next level with solid recruiting and hard work. I am privileged to work for one of the most-prestigious universities in the country, and I continue to enjoy recruiting and winning with intelligent, motivated student-athletes.”

The RedHawks open their 2009 season on Aug. 28 when they take on two-time defending national champion Penn State at the Billiken Invitational in St. Louis.
