Test driver gone wild
DAYTON ( June 18) — Police were called to Auto Connection, 1347 E. Third St., after a male customer took a vehicle for a test drive and never returned. The owner of the business said the subject provided him with a state ID that he photocopied. The man test-drove a 2003 Chevy Cavalier and returned it within the allotted 30 minutes. He told the complainant he’d be back the next day to talk about the vehicle. The man showed up the next day, but asked to test drive another vehicle. He took one out and returned within a few minutes, saying he wanted to test drive the Cavalier again. The man was told he had 30 minutes for the test drive and that if he wanted to take it to a shop to get it looked at, he needed to provide the shop’s number and address. The subject agreed and left with the vehicle about 2:20 p.m. and six hours later he still hadn’t returned. The owner called about 20 times the number he had for the subject, but didn’t get an answer. He then drove to the address on the ID the subject provided but no one answered the door and the vehicle was not there. The owner advised the officer he wanted to pursue charges of driving without consent.
