Working as if it were planned

Sometimes — despite the bureaucracy, the conflicting schedules and goals, and vagaries of existence — things actually work out as if planned.

Utility workers last week started on maintenance of a 16-inch gas main that runs under Union Boulevard between National Road and Wenger in Englewood. No big deal. They’ll tear up the roadway. They’ve been working on the line for months.

Englewood. however, will soon be launching a quarter-million-dollar-plus resurfacing of Union.

The fates have intervened. The gas work will be done before the road is resurfaced.

Good planning? Naw. The paperwork necessary to get a state grant for the resurfacing is taking its time to get rubber stamped.

Which brought a smile to City Manager Eric Smith’s face.

“It doesn’t always work out this way,” he said.

Utility companies, and federal and state governments work at their own mysterious pace, their wonders, or blunders, to perform.
