Clinton leads Obama in Ohio

Hillary Clinton has a commanding lead, especially among women, over Barack Obama in Ohio as Democrats get ready to make their choice in the state’s March 4 presidential primary.

A Quinnipiac University poll released today, Feb. 14, showed Clinton leading 55-34 percent among likely voters in the Democratic primary. She led Obama 45-19 in a poll released in December.

After a string of Obama victories, Ohio and Texas, which also has its primary March 4, have become must wins for Clinton.

While Ohio’s demographics and manufacturing-based economy play to Clinton’s strengths, Obama has not campaigned much in the state so far, said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. In some other states, Obama has closed the gap with Clinton as he increased campaigning, said Brown.

A separate Quinnipiac Poll in Pennsylvania, showed Clinton leading Obama there among likely Democratic voters, 52-36 percent. Pennsyvlania holds its primary April 22 and also is important to Clinton’s efforts to rebound.

In general election matchups in Ohio, Republican John McCain was in virtual ties with both Clinton and Obama. He led Clinton, 44-43 percent and Obama, 42-40 percent. Both leads were within the poll’s margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percent.

In an open-ended question, the largest percent of Ohio voters -32 percent - picked the economy as “the single most important issue in your vote for president.”

In the Clinton-Obama matchup in Ohio, Clinton led among men, 52-42 percent and among women, 56-30 percent. Among white voters, she led 64-28 percent while Obama had a big edge among black voters, 64-17 percent..

Clinton had a slight lead among voters 18-44 years old, 46-42 percent. Among voters 45 and older, she had a big lead, 58-31 percent.

Voters without college degrees picked Clinton by a 58-32 percent margin, while those with college degrees gave her a slight boost, 46-41 percent.

Although Republican President Bush won’t be on the ballot, he could have an impact on the election, especially among independent voters who are crucial to victory.

Nineteen percent of independent voters - nearly one in five - agreed with the statement that: “I am so angry at President Bush that I will not vote for Republican John McCain for president in November.”

The Obama campaign released this statement about the poll:

“The Clinton campaign has declared that this is a must win state for Senator Clinton and she begins her campaign here as the default candidate since she has higher name recognition.

We believe Barack Obama is positioned to do well here because Ohio voters will make their judgment based on which candidate has been consistent in standing up to special interests and opposing unfair trade deals that cost American workers thousands of jobs — and which candidate can mobilize the American people and build the coalition of Democrats, independents, and Republicans to bring the change our country desperately needs.”

Why isn’t the media asking Obama about his drug use? This is a very important issue for me. What kind of message are we sending our children? How can we tell our children that drugs ruin thier lives if our current President is an alcoholic and cocaine user and Obama has also admitted cocaine and pot use. These behaviors tell me their is a character flaw we need to discuss as a nation. We have a clear understanding of the decisions Bush has made. Well, how will Obama react under tremendous pressure? The message we’re sending our children is it’s okay to use drugs…hey, you may even be President. This is the wrong message and Obama has to convince me he is not just surpressing a deeper character flaw that will surface under pressure.

When, how and where did Hillary Clinton demonstrate her infamous economic wisdom and foresight while Alan Greenspan was warning of irrational exuberance as the subprime housing loans were created and pandered during her husband’s administration and her husband supported China’s entry into the World Trade Organization without any conditions such as protecting the environment or labor and property rights to levels that are comparable to western standards? * Today China is not only a leading contributor to environmental pollution and global warming (thank you very much Mr. Nobel Laureate, Al Gore), it’s also pushing up oil and other commodity prices, taking our jobs and stealing our intellectual property. * As a Republican-leaning independent, I will vote for Barack Obama if he is the Democratic nominee running against John McCain but I will not vote for Hillary Clinton. * A person’s character is shaped and tested by their experiences which is why our next President’s character should matter as much if not more than their experience. * 1969 - While Barack Obama was being raised by a single mother and experiencing a life of racial and cultural diversity, Hillary Clinton was learning the art of triangulation and writing an admiring college thesis on Saul Alinsky whose fifth rule of political agitation was, “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” * 1979 - While Barack Obama was actively involved in the South African divestment movement to end apartheid, Hillary was reaping profits of almost 10,000% in the futures markets and leaving taxpayers with her real-estate losses in the Savings & Loan bailout. * 1989 - While Barack Obama served as the Harvard Law Review’s first black president in its 104 year history, Hillary Clinton then wife of the Arkansas governor was receiving payments from a law firm that was doing the state’s business and receiving board of director payments from Wal-Mart where she remained silent about Wal-Mart’s anti-labor union practices. * 1999 - While Barack Obama was securing bipartisan support for health-care reform and passage of low-income tax credits and child care subsidies in the Illinois legislature, Hillary Clinton was urging her husband to bomb Yugoslavia and supporting his Iraq “regime change” policy in order to divert public attention from the president’s marital, legal and ethical infidelities. * 2007 - While Barack was promoting a restoration of balance between work and wealth and criticizing special interests for distorting U.S. tax codes, Hillary and her husband were liquidating their blind trust of the nearly $50 million amassed during their years in public office. * Like her husband, Hillary has no attachment to any position, no leadership qualities and no legal, ethical or moral compass to guide her and would need polls to guide her to a position. * The Irrational Nineties like the Roaring Twenties decade that preceded the Great Depression, were both a golden age for technology, scandal-plagued politicians, corporate greed, and unrestrained personal debt and speculation. * Barack Obama possesses the leadership, principles and visionary qualities of character needed to unite and not divide our country as the global economy teeters on the brink of economic meltdown not unlike the Great Depression.

To people who still keep saying Barack Obama is a lightweight and all fluff, I say LEARN TO GOOGLE COUCH POTATO. Quit asking Obama supporters to ‘say what he stands for’. We already know. You don’t like his policies, do some RESEARCH and find the actual policies you actually don’t like. Couch Potato Generation came before the Internet Generation.

change and hope are addicting words that we tend to fall prey to. i wanna know what they are going to change. and i keep hearing that we need to restore our reputation with the rest of the world. does it really matter what the rest of the world thinks or their media tries to makes us think. european countries are quickly becoming socialist counrties over run with welfare and loosing their tax base. personaly im disappointed with all three canidates but in the end mccain will still fight for the of the things i believe in. we need to reduce welfare roles get the generations of people off the system and into productive society. we need to remove government from your lifes as much as possible and learn to fend for our selfs. we need choice not change, the choice to do what i want when i want without the governments help or permission.

Also, to all the conservative Clinton-haters: If you supported Bush in 2004, then sit down and shut up. You have NO RIGHT to speculate about the failures of Hillary or Barack when they win (and one of them will) because YOUR CANDIDATE has left our country in the toilet! Bush Jr is THE WORST president of our time, and if you supported him in 2004 when the war was the same, the economy was the same and we were still hated by the world, then anyone has a right to question YOUR JUDGEMENT.

As much as I support Hillary and everything she has achieved, I am supporting Obama. If we can’t have single-payer healthcare, then it shouldn’t be mandated because they can’t guarantee lower costs. In addition, I am the biggest pessimist I know - I grew up with a family involved in politics and it is corrupt. Experience in Washington=more rats (lobbyists and special interest groups) on your payroll. With everything telling me I have no reason to hope or fight anymore because the machine is too big, something in Obama gives me hope. GO OBAMA!

Jim, If we did anything that any politician did or for that matter some of these CEO’s we would be lockup up under the jail I agree. I do not dislike Sen. Obama by any means I think he is a positive in all the sea of negatives I also have done my research on both candidates not by the news media or blogs but by their web sites and listening to them. At the point I am in my life and what is important to me I made a choice to vote for Sen. Clinton not on her husbands merits or any of the hype. I wish the two would/could come together and run on the same ticket it would be better for all involved but they most likely are not. I will say this I hear a lot of people saying they are voting for him just because he is intelligent, or because he is black. and he speaks well that is no reason to vote for a candidate nor any reason not to vote I choose Sen Clinton out sound choice for me. As far as it being a Dynasty that is something the media is hyping up.

When the good folks of Ohio decide whether to Vote for Barak Obama or Hillary Clinton a good thing to keep in mind is the following: Bill Clinton signed HWBush NAFTA within 6 months after coming to office. Since 1998 over 3.4 million manufacturing jobs have disappeare, outsourced to cheap labor markets or have become extinct. Hillary Clinton failed to even recognize NAFTA dire consequences until forced to comment in September of 2006. She also refused to admit her mistake in the Iraq war in which she passively sat by while American soldiers lives were sacrified in this costly war. She is part of the political machine which is denying workers new opportunities in this country. I have been a lifelong democrat, but will never vote to put this woman into office. A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for GWBush. Dont be fooled and dont start another Clinton Dynasty. Bring change to the great state of Ohio and change to America. Its time to take our country back.

Michele, her direct involvement in numerous scandals is not slander, it’s fact. Facts that many can’t seem to remember, or are choosing to ignore. Go back and research all of her transgressions. I think you’ll be surprised. If you or I did some of these things we would probably be in jail. IMO, Mr. Obama is the clear answer, he’s like a breath of fresh air that we badly need.

I am not ignoring the facts she has had scandals we are all people and none are perfect we want her to reveal her personal tax papers who in the heck would want to do that no matter what position they are running for. As for the comment about her makeup that is sexist and that is the main reason some people are running to other candidates America might be ready for a Black President but not for a women. Everthing has stuck to Mrs. Clinton look at the news everthing she does is bad but no one dare say anything about Mr. Obama come on now. Democrates are so busy fighting each other that a Republican is going to walk right back in the white house I am not going to argue over who is better Obama or Clinton I just pray whom ever gets the nomination does better than the mess we are in now. We need to focus on positive because all the slander is hurting the Democrates more.

I hope folks in Dayton and Ohio as a whole will realize that Barack Obama is more qualified to lead this nation than any other candidate, democrat or republican. He is better educated, smarter, more experienced in dealing with the issues everyday folks face and brings new ideas to the table. We need someone who can turn this country around. With all due respect, Hillary just has too much baggage.

Can anyone tell me what Obama stands for? I know he is an exellent speaker, but he says nothing! It seems his supporters see him as a blank slate that they can write there hopes onto. I think he must have an agenda. Some agenda, but I can’t find it anywhere in his website or in his speeches. I do know where Hillary stands on most issues. For every reason I have for supporting Obama, I have an equal reason for not supporting Hillary - either in the primary or the general election. I am tired of the same old politics and the same old battles. Those politics have not resulted in much good for our country. Obama has detailed policies. Obama has more legislative experience than Hillary. Obama will not come to the oval office with scores to settle and paybacks to hand out. Obama will be bringing a new style to the government - working together for the good of the country and passing legislation. Another fact that I think needs to be considered is that Obama is more electable than Hillary. I have Republican and Independent friends who will vote for Obama over McCain, but they will not under any circumstance vote for Hillary. The Dems cannot win the general election without independents and Obama has been leading significantly among independents.

Hillary Clinton is the best qualified candidate we have had the honor of supporting in years, Democrat or Republican. If you want real change, let’s have a woman for president. The women of today should stand up and support Hillary the way years ago women stood up and fought to bring women the vote, the birth control pill, the right to choose, and access to jobs that were classified as “men only”. None of that came easily. Now it is your turn to stand up before all the rights achieved slip away. You don’t think it can happen because you never had it any other way. Trust me, if you don’t fight for it, you won’t keep it. To the people who say they won’t vote for a woman for president, do you really want to look in the eyes of your mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters and say “You’re not good enough”.

The only EXPERIENCE Hillary has is corrupt experience. This 35 years of experience that she taunts is a joke. I can’t believe women are falling for her lies and deception. Hillary will not release her tax statements because her experience in corruption would be revealed. Hillary Clinton has surrounded herself with corrupt people in her campaign and that tells you what kind of president she would be. Looking at her campaign finances she can’t even budget a dollar. Profile of HELP! In 2000, Hillary was elected to the United States Senate from New York. As Senator, Hillary has continued her advocacy for children and families and has been a national leader on homeland security and national security issues. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Hillary worked with her colleagues to secure the funds New York needed to recover and rebuild. She fought to provide compensation to the families of the victims, grants for hard-hit small businesses, and health care for front line workers at Ground Zero. And she continues to work for resources that enable New York to grow, to improve homeland security for New York and other communities, and to protect all Americans from future attacks. She is the first New Yorker ever to serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee, working to see that America’s military has the necessary resources to protect our national security. She has visited troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and at Fort Drum in New York, home of the 10th Mountain Division and other New York bases, as well as at Walter Reed Military Hospital. She has learned first-hand the challenges facing American combat forces. Hillary passed legislation to track the health status of our troops so that conditions like Gulf War Syndrome would no longer be misdiagnosed. She is an original sponsor of legislation that expanded health benefits to members of the National Guard and Reserves and has been a strong critic of the Administration’s handling of Iraq. But Hillary has recognized that we can’t ignore our problems at home while we face challenges overseas. She has introduced legislation to tie Congressional salary increases to an increase in the minimum wage, because she believes if America’s working people don’t deserve a raise, neither does Congress. She has supported a variety of middle-class tax cuts, including marriage penalty relief, property tax relief, and reduction in the Alternative Minimum Tax, and supports fiscally responsible pay-as-you-go budget rules. She helped pass legislation that encouraged investment to create jobs in struggling communities through the Renewal Communities program. She has championed legislation to bring broadband Internet access, which is so important in today’s information economy, to rural America. In the Senate, Hillary has not wavered in her work to expand quality affordable health care to more Americans. She worked to strengthen the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which increased coverage for children in low income and working families. She authored legislation that has been enacted to improve quality and lower the cost of prescription drugs and to protect our food supply from bioterrorism. She sponsored legislation to increase America’s commitment to fighting the global HIV/AIDS crisis, and is now leading the fight for expanded use of information technology in the health care system to decrease administrative costs, lower premiums, and reduce medical errors. Her strong advocacy for children continues in the Senate. Some of Hillary’s proudest achievements have been her work to ensure the safety of prescription drugs for children, with legislation now included in the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act, and her legislation to help schools address environmental hazards. She has also proposed expanding access to child care. She has passed legislation that will bring more qualified teachers into classrooms and more outstanding principals to lead our schools. Hillary has been a powerful advocate for women in the Senate. Her commitment to supporting the rights guaranteed in Roe v. Wade and to reducing the number of abortions by reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies was hailed by the New York Times as “frank talk…(and) a promising path.” Hillary is one of the original cosponsors of the Prevention First Act to increase access to family planning. Her fight with the Bush Administration ensured that Plan B, an emergency contraceptive, will be available to millions of American women and will reduce the need for abortions. Hillary is strongly committed to making sure that every American has the right to vote in fair, accessible, and credible elections. She introduced the Count Every Vote Act of 2005 to ensure better protection of votes and to ensure that every vote is counted. In 2006, New Yorkers reelected Hillary to the Senate with 67 percent of the vote. hillaryclinton.com Versus a freshman Senator named Obama who has a record of voting “Present” in the “HOPE” of becoming president. Women for Clinton are with all of you in OHIO. Hillary is the ONLY candidate with a proven record for fighting for Health Care & Education for our children yet alone her capabilities to rework this economy. We here in Virginia/DC/Maryland are looking to you to fend off the “HOPE” campaign of Obama who carries the “buzz” word through University rallies getting them to relive the 60’s. Personally, I can attest to the fact that Hillary is quite a nice lady and “devoted” to working for all of us in the middle class. There is nothing like her determination to do for us! She has the framework, the knowledge and the drive! Women have always born the bulk of the hard work of this nation! Experience matters! We need HELP right now and with it will come the HOPE for out children. Many here will be joining our sisters and brothers in OHIO to ensure that this country gets the HELP it needs NOW!
