McCain, Parsley split

Last February Republican John McCain campaigned in Cincinnati where he called Pastor Rod Parsley of the World Harvest Church in Columbus “a spiritual guide.” Parsley endorsed McCain for president.

McCain no longer is looking for Parsley’s political guidance and Parsley isn’t giving it.

mccain.jpg

On Thursday, May 22, McCain, an Arizona senator, rejected Parsley’s endorsement in the wake of criticisms of statements Parsley has made about Islam. “Mother Jones” magazine has reported on the controversy and David Corn of the magazine produced a YouTube video on McCain and Parsley.

On Saturday, May 24, Parsley withdrew his endorsement.

“Certainly I am disappointed in Sen. McCain’s decision and I believe much of the fault lies with those who have misrepresented my views for political gain and who have lied in pursuit of political power. Therefore I withdraw my endorsement. It is a sad moment in American politics, one of many in this recent election cycle,” Parsley said in a prepared statement.

“My views on Islam, which have come under such scrutiny and misrepresentation, are very much in the mainstream. Anyone who has read the entire chapter on Islam in my book, Silent No More, understands that what I have said is echoed from the White House to the State Department, from leading universities to the pulpits of our nation.

“I believe that radical Islam is one of the greatest threats to Western civilization and, yes, this conflict has roots in our American history. I have always and will continue to make a clear distinction between Muslim terrorists and the vast majority of peaceful Muslims who are appalled at the bloody results of suicide bombers and mass murder. Once again, I unapologetically denounce those who spread death in the name of Allah.

“While I continue to believe peace loving Muslims need the full support of all Christians and Christians must provide understanding, cooperation and friendship to peace-loving Muslims throughout the world who share our desire for democracy and peace.”

It was the second time McCain had repudiated the endorsement of a religious leader. Earlier he rejected the endorsement of Texas televangelist John Hagee after criticism over an audio recording in which Hagee said that God sent Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land. Here is a YouTube video.

Hagee withdrew his endorsement and said his positions had been misrepresented.

Democrat Barack Obama also has had spiritual adviser problems. He ended up breaking with his former pastor Jeremiah Wright after criticism erupted over anti-American comments Wright made in sermons.

We were talking about the sins of those who claim God told them to do it. Obviously we have to talk about the past because to be a sin it HAD to have happened in the past. We cannot see the sins of the future. “It(the Chruch, religion in general) always had God’s wisdom to come back to and correct itself”.(TRS) Problem is, that wisdom and those corrections have never taken or lasted very long. Not sure what corrections Martin Luther set into effect other than certain presecutions of those of Catholic persuasion. That helped a lot. Just ask the folks in Northern Ireland. It seems strange to me that evry New Years day for centuries, the Pope and probably every other religious leader in the world, offers prayers to God for peace of earth. Has it ever happened? Either someone isn’t listening or folks are using the wrong bandwidth. Since it is your reasoning that we should rely on “a God where all knowledge and Wisdom began”(TRS), why don’t take the knowledge and the wisdom which God gave to you and apply it by using your God given Common Sense and reject these charlatans and those who pander to them? The only thing “Faith Based” in the Bush Administration was their insatiable desire for support of these quacks and the votes of their gullible flocks. If you would use your ” human reasoning, which has proven itself exceedingly flawed”(TRS)(Exceedingly flawed, if you voted for Bush), it might occur to you that, yes the choice is easy. Ditch McBush and his Pharisees and actually go with the one sent from God,(Or at least the one on the side of the good guys) - President Obama. God will put a star next to your name in his big book, if you do. Going any other way is just feeding the devil. I am sure you will make the correct choice. After all, you have had the past eight years of “Christian” leadership to give you a clue. Take it.

I am fully aware of the sins of the past - it was my understanding we were talking about the the current issue at hand. One can also point to atrocities of secular and Godless societies such as Stalin’s Russia, Mao’s China and Pol Pot’s Cambodia to find great crimes against humanity as well. The history of the Human race is replete with sin and wrongdoing which simply affirms scriptural teaching, that all sin and fall short, time and time again. Because men and women are the church, they bring their flaws with them. That being said, warts and all, it was those within the church who showed it the error of its way, ie, Luther in the Reformation and Boenhoffer during Nazi Germany to name a couple. It has been humble enough to acknowledge its sins and repent. It always had God’s wisdom to come back to and correct itself whereas Secularism is a floating crap game, depending on the whims of the human race to establish “norms”, something it hasn’t been good at since the beginning of time. Even with the evolution of knowledge, it still can’t get it done. Given the choice of depending on a God where all knowledge and Wisdom began or human reasoning, which has proven itself exceedingly flawed and capable of unthinkable things throughout history, I think the choice is easy.

Dear TRS: Might I call your attention to the Crusades, the Inquistion, the rape and termination of the indigenous peoples of South and Central America from 1500 on. Perhaps you have forgotten what has lovingly been done in the name of Christ. The tortures, the executions, the slavery, the exterminations, the countless wars fought against those who didn’t quite believe as some did. Seems to me that we had a truly Christian nation willingly give allegiance to a man who systematically gassed 6,000,000 of those who didn’t quite come up to snuff, theologically. “Impose Christianity through Warfare?”(TRS) Well, obviously, TRS, you must have failed courses in History of the Dark Ages, History of the Middle Age, History of South and Central America, History of the Crusades, and History of Spanish and British Colonialism. And, oh yes, History of Modern Europe(1900 to 2008). Of course we have the history of Slavery and Jim Crow in our own country, largely sanctioned by so-called Christians who counted blacks as less than a real Christian being. As to “holding a knife to your neck and saying believe my way or die” I suppose it is easy for you to ignore the Inquistion, the forced conversions of whole civilizations of Africa and South America, which were told to convert or die. Really, TRS, there is so much you don’t seem to know much about. I guess they just don’t waste time on the hard stuff on FoxNews. Oh, well, I am always here to instruct and help you.

As I said, I am no great fan of Parsley or Haggee, but come on now - impose Christianity through warfare? Can you give me a website which shows them beheading someone? Can you give me a reference where they strapped a bomb on someone and sent them in to blow up innocent folks? I think thats a bit of a stretch. The mere verbalization of a view does not qualify as imposing one’s view on another. The holding a knife to your neck and saying believe my way or die - now thats another matter.

“From their perspective, it’s their way or the highway” (TRS) You were speaking of Islamic extremists but how fitting that the same phrase applies exactly to Hagee and Parsley and their ilk. ” There theological perspective is to impose (Islam: allow me to change that word to} Christianity on others through warfare. Examples of that exist across the centuries.” Oh so true. It is all just the product of each group thinking that their book and their beliefs are the only true way to think about anything. If we could forget this crap about “my book is better than your book” maybe the world could be a peaceful place to grow in and give thanks in for what THE Creator (Yahweh, Jesus, Allah, whatever) has given us. You said that “radical Islamic extremists must be defeated” I would say that ALL radical religious extremists must be defeated. And John McCain pandering to the lowest of the low does not help the problem.

Wright, Hagee and Parsley are all perfect examples of religious leaders that should have no influence over anyone determining public policy. Their “prepared statements” are always quite different than their sermons and the eagerness spent in covering this up proves their intent to manipulate ignorant minds, spreading hate for political gains, even when they may not believe it themselves. Note to future elected official: don’t worry, I am one voter who doesn’t care where you go to church or who your pastor is so please don’t feel the need to pander to me; keep it to yourself.

Mike in Ohio - You mentioned Parsley was convicted of fraud. I’ve googled it and searched YouTube but can’t find any references. Can you enlighten us any more? Savanation - Obama did make a good speech regarding race relations and he did repudiate Wright’s comments as McCain did with Haggee and Parsley. Neither seperated themselves right away although it eventually did occur with both. To be clear, America welcomes (and so do most Christians) peaceful Muslims. We can agree to disagree but still coexist for that is what freedom of Religion is about; however, radical Islamic extremists must be defeated. There theological perspective is to impose Islam on others through warfare. Examples of that exist across the centuries. Islamic extremists don’t just want to get along - from their perspective its their way or the highway. They have displayed their barbarian ways time and again with beheading, use of mentally handicapped women to blow up places - the list goes on. A good number of Muslims in the Middle East were brought up on Wahabeeism and it has become a part of their souls. It is that group with whom we are at war and they must be defeated for they are truly evil.

Once again TRS proves our point that since they (the lunatic fringe, and yes, TRS, that includes you)haven’t got a rational thought amongst them, they can only claim THE OTHER SIDE are childish 1st graders. TRS, you would be “Blown away” if you had the capacity or the desire for understanding complex issues. Maybe in the future you will gain the maturity needed for insightful thought on political matters. Until then, take your marbles and go home , whining about those nasty liberals who want to save our country from the wasteland of the past eight years. Maybe you might get a lollipop.

I believe the phrase “let he who is without sin cast the 1st stone” is meant to say that we are all sinful. I don’t get the “sinless Republican” comment as that wasn’t the point. So JT - how are my comments racist? Please explain. As a general observation, I do appreciate you libs on the radical fringe (Savanation, JT - you number among those) as you are the gift that just keeps on giving. The wonderful comments you make reflect your firm grasp of the issues and such great intellect - why I’m just blown away. Why I haven’t heard such gifted reasoning since, say the 1st grade, on the playground. I really do hope you feel better - keeping all that anger and hate inside just isn’t good for anyone. Sadly you really aren’t very original or very gifted in “verbal bullying” - perhaps a class is in order. But then, that would require thinking and its just oh soooo much easier to sprew out names and glow in your self righteous indignation, eh?

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone”. Amazing that we have so many sinless Republicans within our nation. The usual Republican hypocrisy: Well gee, so we have a couple(really a whole lot more) nutty preachers. That’s OK because you guys have some too. Ours are OK, but yours are bad. Just like the Right to Life hypocrites: I am totally against killing the unborn BUT it is just ducky to kill 4000 already born soldiers. Hey, you save the babies and we will let you torture all you want. What bullshit! And TRS buys ru=ight into it. See the difference here is: Sen. McBush gave up what few morals he had to pander to these fools in the hopes that, crazy as they may be, they could still drag a few votes his way. It wasn’t until these clowns threatened to interfere with the Jewish vote that Flip Flop John decided to cut his loses. And only then. When Sen. Obama was confronted with the overblown snippet sned up of Rev. Wright, he made a brilliant speech about race and the effect it has on our political system and our lives. And he disavoved the comments of Rev. Wright, taken out of context though they were. Immediately. There was no concern about what voting block he would p**s off (Like Sen. McBush had). I hope that “explains the difference” for you TRS.

Hmmm….seems the left is on the attack. Didn’t really hear anything when Rev Wright was the topic of discussion - but then, I guess its OK to think that the government invented AIDS to kill of minorities among some of his other unique beliefs. I guess if these folks are to loose their tax status, then all the African American churches the Democrats use should also do the same, eh? I am no proponent of the prosperity gospel; but, neither do I find the Afrocentristic gospel of Rev Wright’s appealing. Seems to me Wright’s “demographically poor and uneducated” congregation has bought him an expensive home in a predomonently rich white gated community on a golf course and underwrote a 10M line of credit. Could you explain the difference? Who can cast the 1st stone?

These people, Parsley and Hagee, have no business in the realm of politics. If they are preachers, then if they endorce a candidate, their churches should be taxed as the business’ they are. They are un-American and anti-Christian. And it just shows you the kind of person McBush really is, that he sought out these charaltans for their endorsement. He would do anything for votes, even resort to seeking the support of quack faith healers and their gullible flock. Why doesn’t McBush just send a few bucks in to these bigots and receive a prayer towel. Probably would just as valuable as these ignorant hypocrite’s endorsements. Between the lobbyists and the nutty preachers and the ditto head blowhards, poor John is having a rather hard time.

Right on, Mike in Ohio. I drove by Parsley’s mega-gymnasium cathedral to himself yesterday on I-70 just west of Columbus near the Wilson Road exit. It’s just like so many of these other churches that sucker in the ignorant, WAY over the top. A Taj Mahal to the glory of Rod Parsley himself. He’s as phony as Leroy Jenkins and the rest of the shill meisters for Jeezus. Nothing short of sickening. Oh yeah, and TAX FREE! That ought to make us all feel better!

Had the McCain Campaign simply conducted a little research on google, they could have easily found on their own what a wacko Rod Parsley is. Parsley is very well known in Columbus for his lavish lifestyle paid for by his demographically poor and uneducated followers. He’s been all over the Columbus news on numerous occasions for his “ministry of abundance,” giving sermons with biblical justifications for wearing $800 Italian shoes and housing his family in a million dollar compound - all paid for by his poor parishoners. He was also convicted of fraud many years ago which was also all over the news in Columbus. What Parsley spends on himself is usually matched by what he spends on legal fees defending himself or suing news outlets ala’Tom Cruise for simply reporting on his activities. Check it out on google - the words “rod parsley”, “fraud” and “Convicted” should be a good start.

Parsley’s beliefs are correct. How could anyone not agree that any radical religious element including abortion clinic bombing cristians are terrorists. I do find it somewhat disturbing that this is the first time that that I have know of that the DDN has linked you tube in a political news story. Did this happen when the Rev Wright story broke?

Dear St. Mark, what exactly is your comment on topic? You have absolutely no mention of it. What are you, some frustrated old blog troll? Yep, you’re an old gossip and gasbag commenting bout a comment, obviously a shallow twerp who, as are most right wing christian ministers, televangelists, used car salesmen, illegal aliens and all politicians, have absolutely no sense of humor and wouldn’t recognize one your butt was pumped full of it. You may be exhibiting some characteristics of Paranoid Personality Disorder and have some kind of persecutory complex. PLEASE GET SOME HELP RIGHT AWAY. Counseling and meds can help you. McSame sure took his good old time to dump these freaks. He’s wishy-washy and it loks like he cut n’ run! What these two crackpots said is much weirder than what pastor Wright said. Hell pastor Wright was correct! McBush just wanted to get vote support of the shallow dingbat christrian right and he used and abused and pimped these two dorks, got what he wanted, now is backtracking. Of course, all the while, these two pastors are pimping McSame. McBush acts just like the Clintons. While some of these things might be controversial to some people, I really don’t have any problem with what either of the Pastors had to say. I guess I was expecting something outrageous.
