Turner uses convention as a chance to address DHL
U.S. Rep. Mike Turner shared a stage Wednesday, Sept. 3, with the German ambassador while visiting the Twin Cities for the Republican National Convention. And he couldn’t resist pressing the case for preserving jobs at the Wilmington-based air hub for DHL.
DHL and United Parcel Service are working together on a proposal that would allow UPS to handle all of DHL’s domestic air freight.
Turner, R-Centerville, speaking at the Center for German and European Studies at the University of Minnesota, told Ambassador Dr. Klaus Scharioth that the proposal would devastate southwestern Ohio.
Turner also expressed concern about rumors that UPS might acquire Dutch rival TNT, arguing that such a plan could create a global monopoly.
A series of congressional hearings will begin next week looking at the DHL-UPS proposal.
House Minority Leader John Boehner, meanwhile, said he’s been engaged with the White House for the last month or so pressing them to push to preserve the jobs.
But Boehner, R-West Chester, said he worried the jobs would be hard to preserve.
“It’s an uphill fight,” he said, saying he can’t predict what will happen to the Wilmington jobs.

Boehner and Turner both should be caned for their lack of attention and interest in the well being of the areas employment. This whole thing started with the city of Dayton being duped into believing that getting rid of the Vandalia Trap Shoot and the expansion of runways would retain the distribution center. Instead, we lost the Trap Shoot and the facility was relocated to Wilmington at reduced wages. Now the facility is being relocated again to Louisville with further wage reductions. All of this was allowed to happen under the orchestration of a Republican Lobbist that now serves on McCain’s campaign. With Tom Delay reorganizing how our Representatives work in Congress and causing them to be judged by their party not on how effective they are in Congress for their districts, but on how much money they bring to the party is now their job in Washington. I wonder how quickly the Kentucky politicians will give in to our sleepy eyed reps and ask that the jobs be sent back to Ohio. It won’t happen, corrupt money has already changed hands. Our Politicians in Washington need to be thrown out. Replacing them all with non-career politicians may be the only answer to get them back to honest work for the people. McCain may have helped straighten this out in the past as a Maverick, but the prize was too big and he gave in to the corruption and lies, now he’s just a trail horse being led to the kool-aid and told to drink.
