Eye on Ohio: “Real Change” ad for Obama

By V. David Sartin Plain Dealer

THE AD: “Real Change,” 30-second TV ad.

PRODUCER: Barack Obama campaign.

WHERE TO SEE IT: Television http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/realchange_ad/

SCRIPT: Barack Obama: “We’ve heard a lot of talk about change this year. The question is, change to what? To me, change is a government that doesn’t let banks and oil companies rip off the American people. Change is when we finally fix health care instead of just talking about it. Change is giving tax breaks to middle class families instead of companies that send jobs overseas. Change is a president who brings people together. I’m Barack Obama, and I approved this message because this year, change has to be more than a slogan.”

VIDEO: The candidate looks straight into the camera to deliver his message. A graphic - Read the Obama Plan for real change Barackobama.com/issues - steers the viewer to his Web site.

ANALYSIS: In recent days, the John McCain campaign may have stolen some thunder from the senator from Illinois by portraying McCain as a “maverick” who would bring change to Washington.
McCain picked a Washington outsider (Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin) as his running mate. And, the two have set out on campaign stops to deliver their own message of change. In this ad, Obama is trying to recapture the notion that he’s the change guy.
Obama gives us very few details of his plans in this ad. Instead, it’s much easier to suggest that banks and oil companies “rip off” Americans without saying how he’d fix that. Or, that the opponent’s health care plan is all talk. It’s almost as if Obama has seen that McCain-Palin has captured a lot of attention and he feels he has to say ‘Wait, I’m the guy who said ‘change’ first.”

Come on suburban whites it is time to stop pretending that you make 300,000 a year and voting for McCain just to make the Joneses next door think that you would benefit from a McCain - Palin adminstration. These two WILL increase your tax burden while the elite rich will be laughing all the way to bank. Anyone making less than 100K per year as family has NO BUSINESS voting for McCain. It is like (and I hate this expression) cutting off your nose to spite you face. McCain is running solely to benefit his family which is worth in excess of 900 million dollars just as GW Bush ran solely to drive up the price of oil for his oil buddies (MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!!!!!). Wake up Ohio don’t be fooled by the rich, elitist class..

Roger, Bush was supposed to be good for economy. That didn’t work out so well. You want to try the same thing again? Obama’s gonna cut to the chase and just put the money where it’s most needed, with the middle and lower class. And he’ll make it easier for us to go to school, so we can all have the chance to achieve the american dream. And get rich, and pay back into society in the form of higher taxes that make us complain over a fine meal at a nice restaurant. And if all of us hard working little people have more money, maybe we’ll buy into some companies. And we’ll buy more products, and the rich will still get even richer. You’ll get that extra money you pay in taxes back! It’s all good, man. Win win. The poor get richer, and the rich get filthier rich. All is right with the capitalistic world. It’s sound economics.

I can’t take credit for the below paragraph, but it is true just the same. Funny how poor people (especially minorities) are always told to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and how it’s all about Family, but when an African American(actually white/black) kid, with an arab name is raised and supported by his single mom with some help from his grandparents graduates from a world class university and goes into public service and succeeds at it…in short does every single thing the republican party always tells minorities, working folks and women that they SHOULD do, he’s called an “elitist”!

If the Do Nothing Dem Congress for the past two years is an example of change, then a change for Sen. Obama could be worse. John McCain offers an opportunity to finally cut (veto) unnecessary spending bills and Sarah Palin has the experience to take on the energy security issue. Sen. McCain has a proven record he can reach across the aisle to actually enact landmark legislation including campaign finance reform and immigration laws. And what has Sen. Biden done in his 30+ years in the Senate? Sen. Biden is more of the same along with the Do Nothing Dem Congress. And it did not help that Sen. Obama rejected the law on campaign finance reform to show a good example of change. McCain and Palin 2008.

I like this add because it’s positive and because it’s him speaking in person not just a narration of images. Go Obama!

I agree that he is too vague. He doesn’t mention that his way of giving tax breaks to middle class citizens is to shift the burden to the corporations by actually raising taxes on them, which in turn is passed on to the middle class consumer in the price of the goods and services they produce. This idea of raising taxes on the wealthy has been part of the Democrat mantra for decades; That doesn’t sound like change, it sounds like the same plan Democrats have always supported. He also didn’t mention that high corporate tax rates is the primary reason that businesses ship jobs overseas. This ad is weak, just like his plan.
