McCain leads in two Ohio polls
Republican John McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama in two new Ohio polls in the race for the presidency.
The polls show different trends, however.
In the Public Policy Polling poll released on Tuesday, Sept. 16, McCain opened up a 48-44 percent lead after tying Obama in the same poll last month. The new poll showed white voters and independents moving in McCain’s direction. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percent.
In a Fox News/Ramusssen Reports poll released on Monday, Sept. 15, McCain led 48-45 percent, after leading Obama 51-44 percent last week. The 7-point lead last week was McCain’s largest of the year in this poll, while last week’s lead with consistent with the small lead the Republican has maintained in Ohio in this poll since July. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.5 percent.

wayne that all sounds good and he say she say will be a good meal when your unable to feed your family. also fyi please remember all those quotes were made when others were trying to win the votes. since when have clinton and mccain crossed the threshhold to beig president? last i checked being married to the president isnt crossing the threshold, nor is being a senator he wasnt even voted in as senate majority leader, atleast he would have been 3rd in line, which means he’s been in the senate for a billion years and hasnt earned respect enough to get recognized by his peers. and since your pulling what i think of him quotes about obama, please pull up what bush and the other top republicans has to say about old maverick when he ran against bush in 2004.By Wayne in Dayton

Democrats Questioned Whether Obama Is Ready To Serve As Commander In Chief: Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) Reaffirmed That Obama Was Not Ready To Be Commander In Chief. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: “You were asked is he ready. You said ‘I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.’” Sen. Biden: “I think that I stand by the statement.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 8/19/07) Sen. Biden: “Having talking points on foreign policy doesn’t get you there.” (“Biden Lashes Out At Obama,” ABC News’ “Political Radar” Blog, blogs.abcnews.com, 8/2/07) Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) Said That While She And Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) Had Crossed “The Commander In Chief Threshold … You Will Have To Ask Senator Obama With Respect To His Candidacy.” Sen. Clinton: “In this election we need a nominee who can pass the commander-in-chief test. Someone ready on day one to defend our country and keep our families safe. And we need a president who passes that test, because the first and most solemn duty of the president of the United States is on protect and defend our nation. And when there is a crisis and when the phone rings whether it’s 3:00 p.m. or 3:00 a.m. In the White House, there is no time for speeches and on the job training. Senator McCain will bring a time of experience to the campaign. I will bring a lifetime of experience and Senator Obama will bring a speech he gave in 2002. I think that is a significant difference. I think that since we now know Senator Mc Cain will be the nominee for the party, national security will be front and center in this election. We all know that. And I think it’s imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander in chief threshold. And I believe that I have done that. Certainly Senator McCain has done that. And you will have to ask Senator Obama with respect to his candidacy.” (CNN’s “Newsroom,” 3/8/08) Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) Called Obama’s Foreign Policy Statements “Confusing And Confused.” Sen. Dodd: “Over the past several days. … Senator Obama’s assertions about foreign and military affairs have been, frankly, confusing and confused. He has made threats he should not make and made unwise categorical statements about military options.” (Anne E. Kornblut, “Obama Again Stirs Up Rivals With Statement On Use Of Nukes,” The Washington Post’s “The Trail” Blog, blog.washingtonpost.com, 8/2/07)By Ron

Finally, Buckeyes and the nation are finally seeing right through Obama, the empty shirt that has no experience except being a activist like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, having corrupt associates and that isn’t good for America.By ohio lady

Really, I am not going to rate ohioians as being stupid having spent all of my life there i am going to credit you with having the ability to think, REPUBLICAN controlled government for the past 8 years and if we look at the state of the country, screw it just look at ohio it hasnt gotten better. i am 34 years old, and i can remember when gas was 89 cent a gallon, when everyone could find a job, you could afford to make your car payment and your house payment and not have to put off paying the lights or buying food, education was great and going to college was still affordable. now look at what our kids will remember struggling, 4.15 cent gas, major american cities underwater, borded up houses on all sides, living from paycheck to paycheck and possibly not having a paycheck to live on, if you all are so worried about how obama will pay for the tax cuts, wonder how the state of ohio will pay for the even more unemployment to come, oh yeah i did hear moraine will be closing sooner than later. and for you m ethel, i am not an advocate for obama mccain or any other candidate. i am an advocate for my children and there future and since it seems you have more past than you do future i can understand you stance on the dark ages. the 400k that was donated from fannie mae, was given back when discovered who it was from, obama only takes donations from public contributors not private companies, can you say that for your boy. ms ethel and i say that with all due respect, just because john mccain looks like you doesnt mean he is you or for you, dont flush the futures of the next generation, the state of ohio, the country doen the drain because your afraid of changing. and for you dummies that keep posting that nonsense about obama standing with the muslims, it was never said, he never said it, so quit making up things, it makes me wonder who is trying to play on the intellegence of ohioans, seeing that i saw the same post in the plain dealer when mccain/palin was coming to parma.CHECK YOUR GOVRNMENT WEBSITES PEOPLE THE TRUTH IS THEREBy ohio lady

Since the Ohio Lady may be connected to the Obama campaign, could you find out and report to us the names of Obama campaign committee that he has refused to release? And then you can also research, why Sen. Obama took $400,000 campaign contribution from Fannie May and what he and/or the other Dems did to try to save these agencies?By zaxl

nice triple post, Dan! i guess if Ohio goes to McCain you can always secede from the Union. BTW these polls only account for old people who have landlines (I don’t, neither do my friends) and are gullible or lonely enough to spend time on the phone with a pollster. we’ll see some very different numbers come November.By Bob

My $.02 As a middle class American would someone explain to me the Obama tax plan? We are going to give everyone who doesn’t make $250,000 money and then we are going to tax the rich people to get that money back. Are there that many people in America that make over 250k that can carry those spending plans? Also, looking at the history of Obama in the senate, then before that in congress, how do you justify all the votes he has cast to raise taxes and spending. We need more people like Strickland who cut spending instead of raising taxes. I am sorry I did not vote for Strickland when he was running for office, I intend to vote for him when he runs for reelection, he has a clue (cut spending=good, more taxes for anyone=bad). Also looking at the record McCain has “crossed the aisle” more often then Bidon and Obama put together have. The vast majority of the legislation that McCain has written has been co sponsored by one or more democrats and has been “slammed” by repubs in the senate. If you do your research (provided you make it past daily kos or huffington post and the weekly world news) you will find that for the most part McCain is just barely to the right of the center on almost everything but spending. Part of his problem is he is not conservative enough for most people. Maybe that is why so many democrats supported him in the early primaries. Further research will also indicate that most of our economic problems (the housing problems, the “new” problems on wall street, the energy issues, etc.) have roots in history that go back more then 7 ½ or 8 years. A lot of the chickens that are coming home to roost are about 15 or 20 years old. According to history most republics fall apart and die when people start voting themselves money. Something you should think about before voting for Obama. Now if you excuse me I am going to go buy some bacon and put some lipstick on it. Then I am going to try to figure out how to blame the lousy football in Ohio on Bush 1, Clinton 1 and Bush 2. I am sure those three are in cahoots to throw my football enjoyment out of whack.By Jim 1

Obama is in a NO WIN situation: if Obama loses the election he has not won. If Obama wins the election: 1-Obama will not do enough for the blacks; 2-Obama is a sexists and put the women back in place (Geraldine Ferraro’s comments) 3-Obama is an insider with Biden and will not change anything 4-Obama raises taxes on the rich (my bosses) guess you’ll get the raise? 5-Obama will stand with the Muslims – Obama words ‘I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction’ At least with McCain: we will be safe because no one will mess with the USA.By Joe in Dayton

Excellent dialog fellow Ohioians! I have to leave this discussion now, but will part with a thought I began with. If John McCain truly had a platform to run on, why all the diversions and distractions such as Brittney Spears, lipstick and pigs, bridges to nowhere, etc., etc., etc. Hmmm, I wonder. Maybe it’s because as a nation we’ve allowed these elections to turn into reality shows. As McCain campaign manager Rick Davis recently said “This election is not about issues.”By Dennis Kelly

Hard to find an intelligent or informed post. Ohio voters usually get what they deserve for voting with emotion rather than common sense. When we sent Ken Blackwell to the showers when he was by far the better qualified candidate for governor, it told me a lot about how much voters know or even care to know. I think we might be doomed again by electing a guy who speaks well, but has no experience or plan when it is well known it was the Democrats who put into place the economic crash we now have to deal with - look at the list of board members of Fannie Mae for instance - almost all Clinton insiders. Buyer beware!!By Philman

Unfortunately, the Republican approach has been to improve Corporate Profitability. This has generated a significant move to manufacturing outside the U.S. What we are experiencing now in the economy is the result, Americans can not buy even the lower cost products because of the unstable employment environment. Tax policy has to reward manufacturing domestically. This is good for companies and workers.By Ethel S.

When I saw the posts saying Sen. McCain is four more years of GWB,it seems Sen. Obama’s supporters are giving the Do Nothing Dem Congress a total pass. Sen. Biden, the Senator from MBNA was there too and helped bring about the new bankruptcy law that has hurt alot of people. Sen. Obama’s idea of tax and spend does not work if the spending is not controlled. And Sen. McCain has a proven record of fighting pork barrel spending. Sen. McCain has asked for reform of the mortgage companies and no one in Do Nothing Dem Congress did anything about it because Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Barney Frank benefitted from it. Here is the big difference between someone as experienced McCain next to Obama and that is McCain is willing to call out his GOP members out when they do not do the right thing. McCain called GWB on torture, the surge, global warming, and stem cell research to name a few. It is not mistake that Sen. McCain is ahead in the polls and he did not cause this voter panic because he is calm and collect about this crisis with a plan to reform the broken system. McCain/PalinBy billy

McCain says that he understands things may be tough and I stand by you. Is that all McCain? You’ll stand by me? What is your ecomomic plan? He says he will help retrain me when you job goes overseas. Train me for what? how to work the drive-thru. The good jobs are going away. Shouldn’t we put in place incentives for American companies to KEEP jobs here instead of making it easier for them to send over seas?By Buckeye

Joe in Dayton is right. John McCain has his chance in congress and look where it has got us. George Bush should have gotten us better jobs, free higher education, free healthcare, eliminated outsourcing of good jobs. Shoot, my father-in-law made over $100k (circa late 90s) working a lot of overtime in the factory at GM. Now those jobs are overseas. That, good people, is George Bush’s fault. John McCain will be no different. You know what they’ll say… Go to collage, that is the answer. That will eliminate the chance that your jobs won’t get moved overseas. We are guaranteed a right to pursue happiness, and my happiness requires money. I know it sounds like Robbing Hood but we should tax the rich and give some of it back to those of us in the working class. Shoot, I hardly have money for beer anymore, with the price of health care and school fees and everything. Education should be free, none of this nickle and diming every time you turn around. And then George Bush and his kroney Dick Cheney make the price of oil skyrocket. Who gets rich off of that, they do, that’s who. They’ll argue they have no holdings in the oil industry but the truth will come out in the end. You know Barack Obama is honest, he hasn’t been accused of any misdealings. Barack will lower the price of oil. Also, wind energy is the future, just listen to T. Boone Pickens. People criticize his natural gas idea because he owns 45% of a large NG equipment company — but that is just a way to whine so that you don’t have to reduce Bush’s retirement via the oil companies. And then, we send off these poor kids off to fight our battles. People don’t enlist in the armed forces to go fight other country’s battles, they are promised good money for collage and vocational training here in the US of A. Who knew that when someone signed on the dotted line they would actually have to use a gun on someone or possibly get shot at by people we are trying to help. Crazy! GO OBAMA. Change! Hope! Free Health care, Free Retirement, Free love. (scratch that last one)By Billy

As a middle class Ohioian I can’t afford 8 more years! The Republican campaign has been all fluff with no substance. Where is the details about the issues? There is no details. McCain says the economy is fundementally strong? What John McCain?? Oh then he says.. what I meant is that the american worker is strong. McCain is out of touch. His campaign is all smoke and mirrors. When Obama doesn’t pick Hillary as his running mate, McCain goes out and finds a women to run with him. A gimmick move.. that is all the republicans have to offer this time around .. gimmicks, false promises of “we are the ones that will bring change”. Change wasnt even in McCains speeches until they realized that Americans want and need a new direction after the last 8 years. Then..its Oh.. we can change things too. Listen Ohio, we need things to change. Obama has promised and detailed his plan for change. Even Greenspan and Sachs has indicated that Obama’s ecomonic knowledge and plan are “more on target” with what the country needs and they fear 4 more years of the current policies. I say we take a chance on REAL change and vote for OBAMA. Give him 4 years and see how things might improve.By youranidiot

wow a true show of how the people of ohio think. I am not going to belittle you by saying your stupid or even endorsing the thought that obama thinks ohioans are stupid, but please people look at whats going on delphi, dhl, gm, ford, freddie mac, fannie mae, all historic companies all but on the brink of collapse. minimum wage, the gi bill, equal pay for women, all things john mccain has voted against. maybe obama hasnt been in office very long nor may he have a million years in office like john mccain, but do you want a president in office that has voted with BUSH 95% of the time by his own admission, he even said it in a bragging manner as if he should get a prize for helping to destroy the ecomomy. Ohioans we may not all agree on everything but please concide this fact the economy is a mess, gas is through the roof, and most of us cant afford to live in a country we love. and if we vote someone who thinks this economy is ok into office then please go into your childrens room tonight and tell them your sorry, cause we may never recover from another 8 years of bushonomics.By Jim 5

Jon - Don’t forget the socialist programs that are billed to the middle class. Fannie and Freddie will cost over a trillion (spelled with a “T”). Social Security will be insolvent in 2027. Medicare: sooner. Antitrust laws exist to stop oil companies from squeezing production, and no evidence exists that on their own, they actively try to keep new refiners from starting up. It is only the environmental extremists that keep barriers to entry high and Americans paying. How much is the middle class being billed for this leftist agenda? Jon McCain has a history of keeping spending on socialist programs out of the budget — Obama does not.By Joe in Dayton

I really don’t believe that Obama thinks that Ohioian’s are stupid. He may think that we are a determined lot - determined to run ourselves and country into the ground. We know the facts and they are clear: According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Ohio had 209,400 fewer nonfarm jobs in December 2007 than it had in December 2000. This loss of 3.7 percent of Ohio’s jobs is the worst seven-year loss in state records that begin in 1939 as the Great Depression was ending. (The details are in my special report.) The previous seven-year job loss record was the period ending in 2006 (3.6 percent of jobs lost) and before that the record was held for the period ending in 1962 when 3.4 percent of jobs were lost in the demobilization after the Korean War. The industrial composition of Ohio job losses and gains reflect recent record trade deficits and the explosion of household and federal debt stimulus. Over the past seven years Ohio lost 23.3 percent of its manufacturing jobs (236,000 jobs,) lost construction jobs, lost jobs in wholesale and retail, lost jobs in information services and even in financial activities. Recent job growth came in private health services bureaucracies (100,100 jobs), restaurants and bars (24,500 jobs), and in state and local governments (18,700 jobs), mostly for public education, health care and prisons. Since 2000, Ohio added just 2,500 jobs in firms providing professional, scientific and technical services. That is, every industry that is capable of exporting and faces foreign imports or routine outsourcing lost jobs in Ohio over the past seven years. All new jobs are in domestic consumer services that rely on soaring levels of debt.By Dave

IF Barack Obama thinks Ohioian’s are stupid its because there is enough evidence to back that up with poor decisions for our great state. Let us vote for 4 more years of war, deception, and lies. This is not American Idol folks. Palin should not be voted for based on popularity, your personal emotions, beauty etc…. She does not have a clue and is one step from the presidency. I am not a Democrat and I can she is not fit for office. What did the Bush era due for OH? They came in got everyone worked up with fear and broken promises - got our votes and then let everyone down for 8. Now the repubs are back wanting to give us more of the same. Only I know for sure McCain has party first not Country. And if Ohioians vote republican they have party first not Country also. If the republican party gets in for 4 more and continues a war effort to Iran. All republican voters and their children along with Palin should be shipped off to fight.By Jim 5

Finally people are starting to see that it is the environmentalists that have forced Americans to pay higher and higher prices for gasoline. Oil companies enjoy a near monopoly because liberals effectively block all new competition for refining and oil exploration. The super-rich and the far left win and ordinary Americans lose. Enough!By Jaime

Can someone tell me if McCain has made a campaign ad about the issues? Just curious.By Joe in Dayton

I absolutely agree with you Delaquan. We will fully consider all the issues, intelligently debate the impact of eight years of a GOP administration, and then armed with this information intentionally make the same mistake again.By Delaquan

Once again we will lead the country into four (perhaps eight) more years of war, lies, and recession. This year, however, we will be marching under the banner of “lipstick and pigs” while the future of our children falls off a bridge to nowhere.
